How Hollywood is changing the age-gap love story
Hollywood is flipping the script on the age-old trope of older men paired with younger women.
A new wave of films is showcasing relationships where older women are the romantic leads, pursuing younger men, challenging stereotypes like the "cougar" or "Mrs. Robinson" that have long dominated popular culture.
Historically, Hollywood has perpetuated the image of older men with younger female partners, a practice dating back to the silent film era and reflecting broader societal norms.
However, this on-screen portrayal doesn't align with reality. The average age gap in heterosexual relationships in the US is a mere 2.2 years, significantly smaller than depicted in movies.
While research on heterosexual relationship preferences in Europe suggests men generally prefer younger partners, with the desired age gap widening as they age, women's preferences tell a different story.
Studies indicate women prefer smaller age gaps as they grow older, and in their 60s, they often prefer slightly younger partners. This shift in on-screen representation could signal a move towards more realistic and diverse portrayals of relationships.
The history of Hollywood age gaps
Many Hollywood classics feature significant age gaps. Debbie Reynolds starred opposite a 40-year-old Gene Kelly when she was just 19 in Singin' in the Rain (1952). Kim Novak was paired with 50-year-old James Stewart in Vertigo (1958) when she was just 25. And Maria Schneider was only 19 when she was coupled with Marlon Brando, then 49, for Last Tango in Paris (1972).
Reynolds and Schneider have both spoken about the abusive on-set power dynamics that ensued. Reynolds felt assaulted when Kelly 'shoved his tongue' down her throat, and Schneider accused both Brando and director Bernardo Bertolucci of sexual assault.
More recent, and now notorious pairings, which demonstrate the ubiquity of double digit age differences include 30-year-old Catherine Zeta-Jones and 69-year-old Sean Connery in Entrapment (1990). A 27-year-old Eva Mendes paired with 47-year-old Denzel Washington in Training Day (2001). And 22-year-old Gemma Arterton as the romantic interest of 40-year-old Daniel Craig in Quantum of Solace (2008).
Actor Laura Dern has reflected that the 20-year age gap between her and Sam Neill in Jurassic Park (1993), which was considered the norm in the 1990s, now feels 'completely inappropriate'.
Flipping the script
Audiences are tiring of Hollywood's habit of pairing younger stars with men old enough to be their fathers and are calling for change.
The casting of Cillian Murphy and Florence Pugh in Oppenheimer (2023) received a backlash for the 20-year age gap between the two actors. This came particularly as the film featured lingering nudity of Pugh, and the age gap was ten years greater than the real life age gap between the characters they play.
When Hollywood has depicted an inversion of this age gap dynamic in the past, it's generally been done to demonise the older woman. One of the most renowned examples is The Graduate (1967). The film starred Dustin Hoffman as a 21 year old at the mercy of a middle-aged seducer Mrs Robinson (Anne Bancroft). Mrs Robinson is at the periphery of the story and portrayed as a sad, fading beauty in competition with her daughter who eventually 'wins' the man.
This depiction of a bitter older woman is being challenged by a surge of recent films that centre characters over 40. Babygirl (2025) stars 57-year-old Nicole Kidman as a CEO in a relationship with an intern 30 years her junior, defying gendered stereotypes and sexual power dynamics.
Similarly, Anne Hathaway, 41 in The Idea of You, falls for a 24-year-old pop star. Unlike the daughter in Mrs Robinson, who is perceived as the competition, her character's daughter has her back and acknowledges the double standards women face when the age gap is this way around.
Even so, 2024 was referred to dismissively by some as 'the year of the cougar' following the release of two Netflix romcoms, A Family Affair (again with Nicole Kidman, this time paired with 36-year-old Zac Efron) and Lonely Planet (with 57-year-old Laura Dern and 34-year-old Liam Hemsworth).
Despite this online mockery, the trend looks set to continue. The upcoming Bridget Jones sequel, Mad About the Boy, will show Bridget (played by Renée Zellweger who is now in her 50s) dating a 29-year-old Leo Woodall. Meanwhile I Want Your Sex, set to release in late 2025, will star Olivia Wilde, 40, opposite Cooper Hoffman, 21.
Women still only make up 23% of writers and directors in Hollywood. Interestingly, the recent films featuring older women and younger men couples have more women in key creative roles behind the scenes.
Lonely Planet and Babygirl were written and directed by women (Susannah Grant and Halina Reijn). A Family Affair and May December were written by women (Carrie Solomon and Samy Burch). And I Want Your Sex and Mad About the Boy have a mix of genders on their writing teams.
The need for more women to be involved in the creative decision-making to amplify women's voices is crucial. Research shows that women make up only 35% of speaking parts and roles for women start to nose-dive post 30.
No wonder then that Reese Witherspoon, Amy Adams and Kerry Washington are just a few of the Hollywood actresses who have established production companies to tell stories that reflect the wide range of women's experiences, sexual desires and vulnerabilities – and celebrate the complexity and diversity of their relationships.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac handed popularity reality check as fans don't hold back
A new poll shows most Premier League fans don't want Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac owning their clubs, despite Wrexham continuing to thrive under their celebrity stewardship Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac have been handed a reality check on the extent of their popularity. The two actors have taken the football world by storm since buying the Welsh club in February 2021. The Red Dragons have registered three promotions in a row, lifting them from the National League to the Championship. Wrexham have also attracted a global fanbase after their achievements were highlighted on the Welcome to Wrexham documentary. However, while supporters in the North Wales city are more than happy to have the A-list pair on board, a new poll shows not every fanbase would be. Betfair's annual 'Nation Predicts' survey shows 66 per cent of more than 2,000 football lovers questioned wouldn't be interested in Reynolds and Mac owning their club. Liverpool and Newcastle supporters were most against the idea of Hollywood ownership. The findings of the poll conducted by YouGov Sport are perhaps unsurprising given the two clubs' relative satisfaction with their current owners, who are also far richer than the Wrexham pair. The Reds lifted the Premier League title last season and a summer of big spending has followed under owners Fenway Sports Group. Meanwhile, Newcastle, backed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund, clinched their first piece of major silverware since 1969 by winning the Carabao Cup. Manchester United fans were the most receptive to the idea of Reynolds and Mac taking the helm, with 27 per cent supportive of the prospect, compared to 56 per cent against. That could potentially be down to significant discontent with the Glazer family's ownership and, more recently, the partial takeover by Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Surprisingly, 69 per cent of Tottenham supporters were against the notion of the Hollywood duo taking charge, with only 21 per cent in favour. That's despite Spurs fans often voicing their anger at chairman Daniel Levy over the club's fortunes in recent years. While supporters of Premier League sides might turn their noses up at Reynolds and Mac, who recently filed to legally change his surname from McElhenney, their stock in Wrexham remains as high as ever. And former England goalkeeper Nigel Martyn also believes that celebrity ownership can provide a net benefit for football after highlighting the progress enjoyed by Wrexham and Birmingham City, who are part-owned by NFL legend Tom Brady. Speaking to Parimatch, Martyn said: "I think it's been a breath of fresh air if I'm totally honest. Seeing things like the Wrexham documentary on television and how open they've been with everything is great for the game. "They're popular people and while Ryan Reynolds is somebody that most people think, 'Yeah, he looks like he's a nice guy and he's funny,' both he and Rob McElhenney are serious about how they run the football club as well. "You won't hear anyone in Wrexham say a bad thing about them, I wouldn't imagine, because they've turned them around from a team that had been out of the Football League to one which I expect to see pushing into the higher echelons and the Premier League. It's been tremendous. "Anything that boosts the club and the standing of your club in a positive way is a good thing. To have Tom Brady at Birmingham City, for Birmingham fans, it makes them stick their chest out a little bit further and say, 'Look who we've got now.'" He added: "So far, Wrexham have done it tremendously well and Birmingham appear to be making progress. In all honesty, it doesn't matter how much money you throw at it, there is no guarantee that you're going to win the league. But, so far, both teams have bounced up the leagues pretty well. "Fair play to them, it's going to be interesting but I think it's a positive thing, definitely, and celebrity ownership, with people trying to copy Wrexham and Birmingham, is probably something we'll see more and more and more of." ‘Wednesday' season 2 soundtrack: the tracklisting for Netflix's smash-hit horror-comedy
Wednesday season 2 is here – the first half, at any rate – with more deliciously dark and spooky shenanigans in the accursed Vermont town of Jericho. Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) is back at Nevermore Academy for more lessons of the deeply alarming kind. This time, it's werewolf roomie Enid (Emma Myers) under threat from a mysterious force. There's dark deeds and even darker magic – and that's just the official school syllabus. The task of soundtracking these dark and dismal goings-on fell to music supervisors Jen Malone and Nicole Weisberg – and the pair have gone big with some knowing, surprising and tonally spot-on new musical choices. 'We took the energy of what we did for Season 1 and opened another door,' says Weisberg. 'So now season 2 feels more expansive musically.' Look out for tracks from pre-emo alt rockers Sixpence None the Richer, goth rock legends Sisters of Mercy, K-pop girl group Mamamoo, and even classical OGs Mozart, Wagner and Prokofiev. There's also a classic movie cue from Bernard Herrmann's Vertigo score and a couple of zombie-themed bangers to make Pugsley Addams's pet shuffler Slurp feel right at home. WKRP in Cincinnati actress Loni Anderson dies aged 79 after 'prolonged' illness
The WRKP in Cincinnati actress Loni Anderson has died aged 79 after an illness, her family has confirmed in a statement. The 80s TV star played shrewd radio station receptionist Jennifer Marlowe in the popular sitcom, which ran from 1978 to 1982. The two-time Emmy nominee died on Sunday, just days before the 80th birthday, in a Los Angeles hospital following an 'acute prolonged illness', her longtime publicist Cheryl J Kagan has said. 'We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our dear wife, mother and grandmother,' Anderson's family said in a statement. Anderson starred in the CBS show WRKP in Cincinnati, which focuses on a lagging Ohio radio station hoping to reinvent itself with rock music, alongside Gary Sandy, Tim Reid, Howard Hesseman, Frank Bonner and Jan Smithers. Anderson's character Jennifer was often the only thing holding the place together, as her efficiency combated the inefficiency from other corners of WRKP. Anderson also teamed up with Wonder Woman actress Lynda Carter in the television series Partners in Crime. As well as WKRP in Cincinnati, Anderson also appeared in S.W.A.T., Police Woman and Barnaby Jones and Phyllis. The 80s star, who earned three Golden Globe nominations for her sitcom role, also made headlines for her fairytale marriage to Burt Reynolds in 1988, when she was 41 and he was 52. More Trending During the ceremony, Reynolds presented Anderson with a seven-carat ring he had designed, which People magazine featured in its cover story of the wedding and described as a 'canary yellow diamond surrounded by smaller white diamonds'. The pair grew close while filming the 1983 comedy Stroker Ace, in which Anderson played the Sunday school teacher Pembrook Feeny, while Reynolds was a Nascar driver. However, the romance ended in an acrimonious divorce in 1994. Anderson was married four times in total, to Bruce Hasselberg, Ross Bickell, Reynolds and then to Bob Flick, who she married in 2008. The late actress is survived by Flick, as well as her daughter Deidra, son Quinton Anderson Reynolds and stepson Adam Flick, as well as two grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. Got a story?
