Chart topping star left fuming over Ed Sheeran's Radio 1 Big Weekend performance

Daily Mirror25-05-2025

Music fans were thrilled when Ed Sheeran made an unscheduled appearance at the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend festival over the weekend - but a fellow music star had good reason to be less impressed
Fans were delighted by Ed Sheeran's secret set at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend in Liverpool on Saturday. But there was one person who was a bit miffed over the unexpected appearance.
I hear Tom Odell wasn't best pleased about the Shape of You star's surprise performance. Starting his set at 1.30pm on the Main Stage, Ed's appearance at 1.15pm on the New Music stage drew the crowds to him - and it didn't go unnoticed by Tom.

'Tom was expecting a big crowd for his performance but when Ed's show was announced everyone flocked to his tent and he wasn't happy,' said one source.

Despite the mishap, the Big Weekend festival has been a hit for music fans - as other stars have unexpectedly appeared on stage. On Friday, Little Bit of Love singer Tom Grennan drove the crowds wild when he invited Spice Girls icon Mel C to join him on stage where they performed a duet of her song, When You're Gone.
Tom said after his set on the Main Stage at Sefton Park: 'Mel is a good mate of mine, but she's a Scouse legend too so it just felt the perfect chance to do something a bit special together - thankfully she was up for it!
"The whole event was just a brilliant experience and getting a few mates out on stage to join me really gave it an extra bit of something on top, but doing something marking the memory of the Hillsborough victims just felt right.
'Mel is such a supporter of that cause too, she really understands what it means to local people and has been involved with raising money for the support group over the years.'
Wearing a retro Everton shirt while Mel wore a 90s Liverpool kit, the pair talked movingly about 'uniting the city' with Tom later adding: 'It's a special city with an amazing history, and obviously an incredible sporting rivalry, so hopefully we managed to get the tone just right.

'There were a few bantery boos from the Everton fans when Mel came out in the retro Liverpool kit, so I ran backstage and changed into an old Everton one to redress the balance, it seemed to go down well.
'Hopefully people had a great time as well as taking a second to remember the 97 people who lost their lives as a result of the Hillsborough disaster.' Tom was also joined by local rockers The Zutons, YouTuber KSI and pal Ella Henderson.
Saturday's line-up saw Sam Fender, Sugababes, Myles Smith and Blossoms take to the stage on the Main Stage. And Canadian pop babe Tate McRae, American singing sisters HAIM, and British country group Mumford & Sons were among performers taking to the Main Stage on Sunday.
The Mirror also caught up with The Saturdays star Mollie King at the music event - with the star appearing days after her triumphant return to the air following her most recent maternity leave. 'It's so good to be back,' she told me - and said she was made up to be reunited with co-host Matt Edmonson.
'I've missed this guy. He was the first person to visit and meet the little one.' The Saturdays star welcomed her second daughter, Lilliana, with cricketer Stuart Broad last December.

Concerns as park left 'churned up' after BBC Radio 1 event

Part of a city park has been left damaged, with grass and paths "churned up by vehicles" after a music event was held there, a local councillor has Park in Liverpool hosted the three-day BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend over the May Bank Holiday days on from the event, local people have been sharing photographs online of the damage to grass and City Council said "the damage was not extensive" but the BBC was responsible for any repairs. BBC Radio 1 has been contacted for comment. Opposition councillor Liberal Democrat Richard Kemp said he was concerned about the scale of the damage."I'm concerned about the grass and any gouging effects and trees pushed back or damaged during the installation of security fencing," he said. Mr Kemp, a councillor for nearby Penny Lane, added he had requested a report from the council to look at the impact to the local area and the environment.A city council representative said site walks had already taken place and a plan was "currently being pulled together which will provide a timescale for the repairs". "The damage is not extensive and the reinstatement work will be carried out by Liverpool Street Scene Ltd," it added. In 2024 the city became the world's first Accelerator City for climate action, under UN Climate Change's Entertainment and Culture for Climate Action city council representative said the authority had worked with external specialists to monitor the impact of the Big Weekend event, which included the "impact on the environment and sustainability" and would share those finding once a report has been written "in the coming months". Regular Sefton Park user Adam said he thought he damage was "minimal" and said it was "no worse than on a campsite where tents have been".A local resident, who did not want to be named, said she thought the grass had been protected "really well" and the event had been well organised."There was hardly any traffic disruption and not much noise," she said."The streets were fairly clean after, much cleaner than after a lot of other events. I thought it was really good for the city." Listen to the best of BBC Radio Merseyside on Sounds and follow BBC Merseyside on Facebook, X, and Instagram. ‘I don't give a s*** what people think' – Scots golf star in foul-mouthed blast at on-course critics

ROBERT MACINTYRE is known for wearing his heart on his sleeve - and many love him for it. For some, it just rubs them up the wrong way. But MacIntyre? He couldn't care LESS what they think. Advertisement 2 Robert MacIntyre is defending his Canadian Open title this week Credit: Reuters 2 And the Ryder Cup hopeful has had a few choice words for his critics Credit: Getty The Scots golf star is defending his Canadian Open title on the PGA Tour this week. MacIntyre, 28, won the tournament last year in emotional style with his father Dougie drafted in as his emergency caddie. The victory was the Oban lefty's first on the elite circuit but it wasn't a straightforward one. Minus the last minute caddie switch, MacIntyre also lost his cool somewhat at a drone that flew over his head before taking a shot. Advertisement MacIntyre isn't one to hide his feelings and on other occasions in his career he's been caught swearing on camera whilst playing. And he infamously called for the iconic 17th hole at St Andrews (the Road Hole) to be "blown up" - which led to fellow pro Eddie Pepperell labelling him as "whiney". Ahead of this title defence, MacIntyre was asked about those who think he is perhaps too passionate and should do more to keep his emotions in check. He responded: "Most of time I don't give a s*** about what's going on. Advertisement "I really don't care about other people's opinions, to be honest with you. "If you're not part of my team, not part of the inner circle, your opinion really doesn't matter to me. "I think that's a massive thing, especially in the sport we play. I think it helps when you're trying to move forward, you're trying to dissect every part of the game to try and get better. "If you take too many opinions in that really aren't trying to help you, then, yeah, it doesn't help at all. Advertisement I think something I like is I don't really care about what others think outside of my team and my friends or my family." This year the Canadian Open is taking place TPC Toronto, as opposed to Hamilton Golf and Country Club where MacIntyre won last year. And while the venue for the event has changed, MacIntyre has still felt a warmth from the Canadian fans - even though he denied them a home winner 12 months ago. "Last year it was special, but to come back to a place that I've got fond memories of, obviously it's a different golf course, but as a place, as a country, with the fans as well. Advertisement "The support I got was unbelievable, all the way until Sunday afternoon when they were obviously wanting a Canadian (MacKenzie Hughes) to win!" Tom Felton announces he is returning as Draco Malfoy over a DECADE after Harry Potter ended

Tom Felton has announced that he is returning as Draco Malfoy over a decade after the final Harry Potter movie premiered... and fans are in tears about the news. The actor, now 37, portrayed the beloved blonde bully in the Harry Potter movies from 2001 until 2011. And now, 14 years after the film series came to an end, he has revealed that he will reprise the role for the Broadway show Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Tom will join the cast in November and star in the show for 19 weeks, concluding his run in March 2026. He shared the exciting news on the Today show on Thursday morning, stating, 'Being a part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honors of my life. 'Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me, because when I begin performances in Cursed Child this fall, I'll also be the exact age Draco is in the play.' Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, based off a screenplay written by J. K. Rowling, takes place 19 years after the original series ended. It follows Harry, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and Draco's kids as they head off to Hogwarts. Harry's son Albus and Draco's son Scorpius become best friends and get up to their own adventure - and almost destroy the entire wizarding world along the way. 'It's surreal to be stepping back into his shoes - and of course his iconic platinum blond hair - and I am thrilled to be able to see his story through and to share it with the greatest fan community in the world,' Tom added. 'I look forward to joining this incredible company and being a part of the Broadway community.' Naturally, fans were ecstatic over the news and rushed to social media to share their thoughts - and some even admitted that the announcement had brought them to tears. 'Not me crying when I saw this announcement on the Today show,' one user commented on Instagram. 'I'm sorry, what?! Currently screaming,' wrote another. Someone else added, 'I'm speechless.' 'No f**king way this is iconic,' a fourth post read, while a fifth said, 'Guess I'll be flying out to New York to see this now.' Naturally, fans were ecstatic over the news and rushed to social media to share their thoughts - and some even admitted that the announcement had brought them to tears Tom will play Draco from November 11, 2025, to March 22, 2026, at the Lyric Theatre in New York City. Tickets go on sale June 12, while the presale will take place on June 10. This isn't the only exciting Harry Potter news as of late, as the three lead child stars for the upcoming TV series were finally announced after months of speculation last week. Dominic McLaughlin has bagged the role of Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton is set to play Hermoine Granger, and Alastair Stout will portray Ron Weasley. The lucky three children are set to start filming this summer and were picked from more than 32,000 audition tapes from across the UK and Ireland. The young trio will join A-listers John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, and Emmy, Olivier as Severus Snape.
