
Rainfall eases drought conditions but the relief may be temporary
Nearly 13% of Maine — a strip along the southern coast and Down East — is in a state of moderate drought and nearly two-thirds of the state was classified as "abnormally dry" as of Tuesday, according to the latest data available from the U.S. Drought Monitor.
Just under a quarter of the state reported normal conditions, keeping up a dry spell that's covered much of Maine since September, according to the Drought Monitor.
For most of 2025, about 92% of the state had been at least "abnormally dry," while more than 38% weathered moderate drought conditions, according to the monitor.
Those numbers fell to their current levels last week, shortly before a storm dropped around an inch of rain over southern Maine early in the week. Greater Portland recorded between a half and 1 inch of rainfall by Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
Sarah Jamison, senior weather service hydrologist in Gray, said recent rain could provide some quick moisture to dry regions, but "short-term relief does not necessarily wipe out the level of drought impacts that we have sustained in the fall."
"Think of today as you received your paycheck: 'Boy we've got a lot of money,'" she said. "But in the background there's a bunch of credit card debt."
The NOAA Climate Prediction Center's seasonal drought outlook says that the drought is expected to clear from Maine's coastal communities, as well as much of New England, by the end of June.
New England has seen near-normal levels of precipitation so far, with more rain expected through the end of the month, forecast author Brad Pugh wrote. Cooler temperatures may also help moisture absorb into the soil, he said.
But forecast confidence was low for the Northeast, Pugh said. The outlook, which was released Thursday, will be updated at the end of the month and more closely examine April precipitation trends, he said.
"We are going to be reliant on a wet spring, some pretty decent spring showers," Jamison said. "To even get to normal, we've got to hope for a fairly wet spring."
A DRY WINTER
Part of the reason for Maine's ongoing drought has been the cycle created by an unusually dry January, Jamison said.
Typically, Maine gets a thick layer of snow that insulates the ground. But this year, rapid oscillations between highs and lows left much of the ground bare, allowing the frost to penetrate deep into the ground. A deeper frost, in turn, prevents melting snow from being absorbed into the hard soil, leading to runoff, said Richard Tinker, a meteorologist at the Climate Prediction Center.
"If you get a sudden increase in temperature, it will melt that snow, but it will not be able to penetrate the ground," Tinker said. "When you get these warm, wet systems in the middle of the winter ... it just doesn't do as much as you might think it would."
Tinker said that oscillation is most often a problem in higher elevation regions of the country out West, but it can happen in the Northeast as well.
The ground frost was thicker this year than it has been in around a decade, Jamison said. The rapid fluctuations between above- and below-freezing temperatures created "an idealized setup for deep frost depth," she said.
"Normally you have the snow to insulate," Jamison said. "That floor of concrete is a lot thicker than it's been."
A recent warm spell also meant that the snow began melting about two weeks earlier than usual — while the deep frost was just beginning to soften — which compounded runoff issues.
"If the snow melts and runs off before the ground thaws, we are not able to capture as much of that as we would like," she said.
Meanwhile, snow depth and the overall amount of water stored in the snowpack this winter lags typical levels.
She cautioned that, even if spring rain alleviates drought conditions in the next few weeks, there may not be enough moisture in the soil to last through the dry months of summer.
"We're going to have to see how we are when we start to green up," Jamison said. "That soil moisture can get depleted fairly quickly."

La Niña is brewing. Here's what it means for California weather
Forecasters expect La Niña conditions to develop this fall and winter, according to an update Thursday by the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center. The agency has issued a La Niña watch, indicating that conditions in the tropical Pacific Ocean are favorable for the climate pattern's formation in the coming months. La Niña is defined by cooler than average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific along the equator. The ocean waters affect atmospheric activity, tilting the odds toward drier than normal conditions in Southern California and wetter than average conditions to the far north, especially in the winter. The Climate Prediction Center's latest seasonal outlook for November, December and January hints at such a pattern. But the forecast isn't guaranteed: La Niña may not emerge at all. And, even if it does, other factors could outweigh La Niña's influence. The recurring climate phenomenon involving La Niña and its counterpart, El Niño, is 'the great nudger,' said Climate Prediction Center scientist Michelle L'Heureux. 'It won't always be successful.' Sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific are currently near normal, following a brief stretch of La Niña conditions last winter. The Climate Prediction Center outlook gives a 53% chance that La Niña conditions will develop in the fall. Forecasters expect the cooler than average waters to disappear shortly thereafter, with sea surface temperatures returning to near normal, or neutral, conditions in a few months. During the most recent fall and winter, California precipitation mimicked the expected La Niña pattern: Northern California logged above-average rain, while southern regions remained parched. A lack of rain in Los Angeles set the stage for the devastating Palisades and Eaton fires, and more recent blazes that broke out in the region. But during the 2022-23 La Niña winter, Central and Southern California faced a flurry of storms fueled by atmospheric rivers, ribbons of water vapor in the sky. Downpours brought flooding across California and snowstorms produced one of the state's largest snowpacks on record. La Niña and El Niño aren't the only factors behind California weather. A recent study reported atmospheric rivers are 'wild cards' that can disrupt the patterns expected during La Niña or El Niño years. 'One or two atmospheric rivers can turn it into a wet year, but a weak atmospheric river season can turn it into a dry year,' said author Rosa Luna-Niño, a postdoctoral scholar at UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography, in a statement. 'This means we can't trust El Niño and La Niña completely to make accurate water year predictions.' L'Heureux explained that La Niña's influence is on seasonal time scales, rather than the day-to-day time scale of individual weather events. It's 'playing on a slightly different ball field,' L'Heureux said. One effect, for example, could be shifting atmospheric rivers slightly northward over the course of an entire season. Signs that La Niña could potentially form have appeared in the past month, with shifts in ocean temperatures and wind patterns, L'Heureux said. But how the coming months will play out remains an open question. 'We need to wait … to see if a significant La Niña is going to develop this winter,' said Shang-Ping Xie, a climate scientist at UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography, by email.

Footage taken by a bystander and shared on social media site X shows a man breaking the back window on an SUV to rescue a woman trapped inside. The water comes up to the man's neck as the vehicle floats helplessly in the floodwaters. One of the deceased was found in floodwaters as rescuers searched for someone else who was swept away, reports Chattanooga Times Free Press. The other three deaths were from a family who were in their car when a tree fell on it. The best way to not get into a bad situation when a road is flooded is to not drive down it. Many times, drivers believe the water they're headed towards is shallower than it really is, only realizing once they're literally in too deep that they're in trouble. Everyone should have a glass break in their car, just in case they end up in a situation where they need to escape through a window quickly. Will Tropical Storm Erin impact Daytona, Flagler? See the latest on strengthening storm
All eyes in Florida remain on Tropical Storm Erin as it moves westward across the Atlantic, but it's still too soon to tell what impact the strengthening storm might have on Daytona Beach, Volusia and Flagler counties, according to the National Weather Service. Tropical Storm Erin is expected to begin strengthening soon and is likely to become a hurricane in the next 48 hours, according to the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center. Erin is moving fast across the Atlantic, at 22 mph. It's forecast not only to become the Atlantic season's first hurricane, but also a major hurricane. A major hurricane is one that's a Category 3 or higher, with maximum sustained winds of at least 111 mph. Officials encourage residents to monitor Erin closely and to be prepared. 'It's still the same message, which is that it's too early to determine any sort of impacts to Central Florida, but it's a good opportunity to make sure that hurricane plans for yourself are in place, that you have your hurricane kit stocked and ready to go,' said Brendan Schaper, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Melbourne. Those in Volusia and Flagler counties are urged to keep an eye on the forecast and be aware that peak hurricane season is now upon us, the NWS stated.
