Existing staff can serve as OSH coordinators, clarifies deputy minister
He stated that existing employees can take on the role under Section 29A of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (Act 514).
The provision, enforced since June 1, 2024, allows flexibility in fulfilling OSH responsibilities without creating new posts.
Abdul Rahman clarified this during the Dewan Rakyat's question-and-answer session.
He was responding to Rushdan Rusmi (PN–Padang Besar) on whether dedicated OSH Coordinator positions would be established in the public sector.
The requirement applies to all employers with five or more workers, including government agencies.
Section 29A aims to ensure workplaces have a designated individual overseeing OSH matters.
OSH Coordinators assist employers in complying with legal safety requirements.
They also coordinate the implementation of workplace safety measures.
The government believes this approach avoids unnecessary bureaucratic expansion. - Bernama

Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden (PN-Alor Setar) said the nation should seek justice for Zara Qairina's untimely passing, which remains unanswered nearly a month later. "We should not look at it as a case of someone else's child, but our own. "Only then will we be accountable in tackling the disturbing trend of bullying and other social issues plaguing our nation. "There should also be an immediate inquest to identify those responsible," he said when debating the 13th Malaysia Plan in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Aug 12). Afnan Hamimi urged the government and society to ponder what kind of human talent they want to nurture for the nation in the coming decades. "Lately, the increasing visibility of various social issues like free sexual behaviour and LGBT issues has become an alarming concern on social media. "What's worse (is) the troubling trend of bullying that has escalated to life-threatening levels," he said. He also criticised those who brazenly record and disseminate their harmful actions online. "What kind of society are we nurturing when individuals shamelessly record and share their harmful deeds? "Our children are learning from viral trends and digital media, rather than traditional values and education," he added. Expressing concern for future generations, Afnan Hamimi noted that while the current generation might withstand these challenges, the next may not be as resilient. "What use is economic progress if our moral fabric continues to deteriorate? "We need serious reflection on our societal values alongside economic growth," he added. Zara Qairina, 13, was found unconscious at her school dormitory block in Papar on July 16 and declared dead the following day. The incident was initially classified as sudden death by police, but later developments led to the investigation being reopened, with allegations of bullying arising.

STR Phase 3 aids families with kitchen and school essentials
KUALA LUMPUR: The third phase of Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) disbursement, which commenced today, has brought relief to low-income families across Malaysia. In Kedah, vegetable seller Noor Syakilah Adzhar, 42, plans to use the funds for diapers and milk for her twin sons. 'My husband's income as a grass cutter is irregular, so this assistance is crucial for our family of six,' she said. Retiree Borhan Abd Rahim, 67, from Pendang, will allocate his STR aid for staple food items. 'I appreciate the government's care for seniors like me,' he added. In Melaka, cobbler Asyraf Ismail, 35, highlighted how the aid eases his end-of-month financial strain. 'It helps me stock up on food before the school holidays,' he explained. Perak food trader Mohd Rithauddeen Mohd Mustapha, 48, emphasised the programme's role in offsetting high living costs. 'The STR lets me buy extra household essentials,' he said. Kelantan housewife Norizan Hasan, 57, appreciated the flexibility of STR compared to SARA. 'Today, I bought basmati rice for special nasi lemak,' she shared. Sabah fisherman Mohidin Sugarin, 52, noted the aid's timeliness amid rising fuel and equipment costs. 'This RM650 helps repair my fishing net,' he said. Kota Belud trader Juriah Muntang, 45, relies on STR for her children's schooling needs. 'Road closures disrupt my business, so this aid is vital,' she added. Kota Marudu farmer Ligundao Akoi, 63, praised the extended application period. 'It ensures more villagers receive help,' he remarked. In Sarawak, cold storage worker Alvin Ayin, 37, called STR a lifeline. 'It covers kitchen and school expenses before payday,' he said. He confirmed that the Ministry of Digital, supported by the National AI Office, will spearhead the initiative. Anwar reiterated Malaysia's ambition to become an AI nation under the 13th Malaysia Plan for sustainable growth.
