Avoid political affiliations, cultivate a questioning mind, Minister tells youth
Inaugurating the Karnataka University Scheduled Castes Research and Postgraduate Students Association and Employees Association at Karnatak University in Dharwad on Monday, he asked youth to remember that the nation did not exclusively belong to the BJP, the Congress or any other political party.
'Everyone must come together to build the country. Positive thoughts must flourish in society. Students should avoid getting entangled in controversies and focus on academics to contribute meaningfully to the nation's progress,' he said.
Elaborating on Baba Saheb Ambedkar, Mr. Lad said that through the Hindu Code Bill, Ambedkar ensured property rights for women and prioritised their educational and economic empowerment.
Mr. Lad emphasised that Dr. Ambedkar's ideals must be embraced by all not just by members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and the backward classes
Underscoring the need for students to be careful about social media, he asked them to seek the truth behind what is seen on social media.
'Through study and understanding, real facts must be identified. When great leaders are spoken against, we must strongly condemn such acts,' he said.
Amaresh Yatagal stressed the need for re-examining the contribution and history of Valmiki and Beda communities. He said that folklore literature revealed the history of the Beda community and references to the Beda community are also found in the histories of the Surpur kings and Sangolli Rayanna.
Registrar (Evaluation) Nijaligappa Mattihal said that many communities have been deprived of education for centuries and they now have access to the world of letters and are slowly progressing socially.
Along with making efforts for the development of these respective communities, one should remember to contribute towards building a united India, he said.
President of Scheduled Castes Employees Association of the university Krishna Naik presided over the function.
Valmiki Prasannananda Swami of Rajanahalli and Jnana Swaroopananda Swami were present. Achievers were honoured during the programme.

Bengaluru: The BJP has slammed the Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka government over its report blaming Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for the stampedes during the June 4 victory parade that left 11 people dead and nearly 50 injured. Aravind Bellad, BJP MLA and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, said the government wanted to take credit after the RCB's IPL victory after 18 years, but has now started blaming the franchisee and cricket star Virat Kohli for the stampede deaths. The state government's report, made public after a high court order, says that RCB put out social media posts inviting the public to join the victory parade from Vidhana Soudha to Chinnaswamy Stadium "without consulting the police". The report says RCB also shared a video clip of Virat Kohli, its star player, in which he said the team wants to celebrate the victory with the people of Bengaluru. These posts, the report said, contributed to drawing a massive crowd to the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Confusion over entry passes fuelled the chaos, eventually leading to the stampede tragedy, the report says. The BJP has now slammed the state government and accused it of trying to evade responsibility. "It's not only RCB that invited people, a huge number of people came on the invitation of the Congress, (Deputy Chief Minister) DK Shivakumar and government officials, the DPAR secretary came on TV and invited people, the government is solely responsible for this," Mr Bellad said. "If the report says RCB is solely responsible, why did the government suspend police officers? The Chief Minister should apologise to the former police commissioner. If there was an intimation by RCB that they will hold the event, then the government should have refused permission. They they had all the right to say this event cannot be held. Just to take credit for the victory, the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister invited people. To now put the blame on a great player like Virat Kohli or RCB is wrong," the BJP leader added. The state government had urged the high court to keep the report confidential, but the court stated there were no legal grounds for such confidentiality. The report explains the chaos that led to the stampedes at some gates of the Chinnaswamy Stadium after over 3 lakh people gathered and tried to enter the stadium, which has a capacity of about 35,000. The report also explains why the state government did not call off the victory parade after the stampede. It says abruptly shutting down the victory celebrations at the stadium "could potentially incite violence among the gathered crowd and adversely affect overall law and order across the city". "...a measured response was taken by curtailing the duration of the function. Instead of complete termination, a measured approach was adopted by allowing the event to proceed with significantly curtailed duration and enhanced monitoring," it says.

Ashok Gehlot questions Amit Shah on delay in Kanhaiyalal case probe
Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has raised questions over the prolonged delay in justice for Kanhaiyalal, whose murder became a political flashpoint ahead of the previous Assembly elections. Taking to social media just ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to Jaipur, Gehlot alleged that despite quick action by the Rajasthan Police, the case has seen no substantial progress under the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which falls under Shah's ministry. Gehlot recalled that before the 2023 Assembly elections, Amit Shah repeatedly invoked the Kanhaiyalal case in election rallies across Rajasthan to target the then Congress-led state government. 'In this case, the Rajasthan Police arrested the accused within just four hours. Both were found to be linked to the BJP. Yet the NIA took over the investigation overnight. We did not object, despite that,' Gehlot stated. He alleged that the BJP misled the public with false claims of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 50 lakh compensation being paid, which he claimed significantly contributed to the Congress government's defeat. 'Even after three years, justice has not been served. The NIA court doesn't even have a regular judge, and it has failed to get the statements of key witnesses recorded to date,' Gehlot added. Demanding answers from the Union Home Minister, Gehlot questioned how much longer Kanhaiyalal's family will have to wait for justice. 'The BJP used this case for political mileage, but they have done nothing to ensure speedy justice,' he said. He urged Shah to speak on the status of the case during his Jaipur visit and asked whether the Centre plans to strengthen the judicial process or continue using such sensitive matters for political benefit. It needs to be mentioned here that Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah will visit Jaipur to participate in the Cooperative and Employment Festival being organised in Dadiya village on Thursday. The event is set to bring several major benefits to Rajasthan. Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma said that over 8,000 youth will receive appointment letters during the event. He also confirmed that Union Minister Shah will announce several developmental initiatives for the state. Rahul Gandhi slams Election Commission over Bihar Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday (July 17, 2025) claimed that the Election Commission has been caught "red handed" stealing votes in the name of Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar and asked whether the poll body has completely become BJP's 'Election chori branch'. The EC has all along maintained that the revision, being held after 22 years, will cleanse the voters' list of ineligible people, duplicate entries and include those eligible as per law to vote. Mr. Gandhi shared a post by Ajit Anjum, whose YouTube channel is running a series on special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. "Election Commission in Bihar has been caught red handed stealing votes in the name of 'SIR'. And FIR will be lodged against the one who exposes it!" Mr. Gandhi said in a post in Hindi on X. 'Is EC still 'Election Commission' or has it completely become BJP's 'Election Chori' branch?" the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said. Mr. Anjum has been accused of spreading communal tensions in Begusarai district by the local administration. He had denied the allegation and shared a screenshot of an FIR lodged against him. Opposition parties have asserted that the ongoing exercise will disfranchise crores of eligible Indian citizens for the want of citizenship documents. On Wednesday (July 16, 2025), Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar thanked the eligible voters of Bihar for their active participation in the "much-needed" cleaning of the electoral rolls during SIR. Mr. Kumar's remarks came in the backdrop of the Supreme Court hearing a clutch of pleas questioning the intent behind the SIR ahead of the assembly polls in the state later this year.
