Madhya Pradesh BJP MLA's 'Om Puri-Sridevi' Analogy Over Roads Sparks Row
As the condition of roads continues to deteriorate across Madhya Pradesh during the ongoing monsoon season, a political war of words has erupted between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress. Amid public outrage over waterlogged and broken roads, BJP MLA from Pichore, Pritam Lodhi, stirred controversy with a bizarre analogy.
Responding to media questions outside the Assembly in Bhopal on Monday, Mr Lodhi said, "During Digvijaya Singh's tenure, the roads were like Om Puri. Now, under our government, they have become like Sridevi. But it is raining heavily. We have to make a compromise with Lord Indra."
Mr Lodhi arrived at the Assembly in a private cab instead of his vehicle, citing poor road conditions. "Lord Indra is angry. It is raining heavily, and the roads have turned into water parks. I don't have a boat, nor can I swim here. I had a small car, which wouldn't survive these roads, so I came by Ola," he said with a laugh.
While Mr Lodhi's remarks were intended as satire, they quickly drew sharp criticism. Deputy Leader of Opposition Hemant Katare termed the comment a "disgrace to women." In a social media post, he accused the BJP of being insensitive and corrupt. "This statement not only insults women but also mocks the people's sufferings. It reflects the BJP's culture of ignoring public grievances once in power," he wrote.
Mr Katare also hit out at BJP minister Rakesh Singh for his earlier remark: "As long as there are roads, there will be potholes." Calling it "an example of real arrogance," he said the statement epitomises the ruling party's indifference to the problems faced by common citizens.

Highlighting the six-month investigation carried out by Congress, he further alleged that the Election Commission of India (ECI) doesn't exist and has disappeared. According to documentation received from the EC, Mr. Gandhi said that the Congress has ascertained that nearly 1.5 lakh voters out of 6.5 lakh who voted in the Lok Sabha elections were "fake". "It makes it clear that the institution that defends the constitution has been obliterated and taken over. We have such proof that will show the whole country that the institution of the Election Commission does not exist. It has disappeared. It has taken us 6 months of non-stop work to find this proof. You will see with zero doubt how a Lok Sabha election is stolen. 6.5 lakh voters vote, and 1.5 lakh of those voters are fake," the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha said. The LoP rekindled his suspicions regarding the election system, saying that he had his doubts about "something being wrong" since 2014. Questioning the BJP's sweeping victories in the assembly elections of Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, Mr. Gandhi noted that they began investigating electoral malpractices following their defeat in Maharashtra, where one crore new voters appeared within months ahead of the assembly elections, ultimately voting for the BJP. "I've been speaking recently about the election system. I had always suspected something was wrong, starting in 2014. I had a suspicion in the Gujarat Assembly elections already. This ability to win sweeping victories. The Congress Party didn't get a single seat in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, or Gujarat, which surprised me. Whenever we spoke, people said, 'Where's the proof?' Then, something happened in Maharashtra," Mr. Gandhi said. "In the Lok Sabha, we won the election. And then four months later, we didn't just lose, we were obliterated. Three formidable parties suddenly just evaporated. We started to look seriously for electoral malpractice. We found that in Maharashtra, one crore new voters appeared between the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections. The bulk of those votes go to the BJP... Stay home to avoid rape: Gujarat traffic police's posters spark row; DCP says posters created ‘without their consent'
Posters allegedly sponsored by the Ahmedabad traffic police for a safety campaign have stirred up a controversy, as some of them urged women to stay home to avoid getting raped. The posters, which were pasted in a few localities in the city, have invited criticism from the opposition, which raised questions about women's safety in Gujarat. Posters with statements, "do not attend late night parties, you could be raped or gangraped," and "do not go with your friend to dark, isolated areas, what if she is raped or gangraped?" were pasted on road dividers in Sola and Chandlodia areas and have since been removed. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic West), Neeta Desai clarified that the city traffic police had sponsored posters concerning road safety, not women's safety. Satarkta Group, an NGO, had created the controversial posters without the consent of the traffic police, she claimed. "The NGO had approached us and said they wanted to organise traffic awareness programmes in schools and colleges and wanted our staff to accompany them. We were shown posters related to traffic awareness. But such controversial posters were not shown to us and were plastered without our consent," Ms. Desai said. She added that the posters were immediately removed when the issue was brought to their notice. Gujarat Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) took a swipe at the BJP-led government, saying the posters exposed the state of women's safety. "The BJP government in Gujarat talks about women's empowerment, but the ground reality is completely different. In the last three years, more than 6,500 incidents of rape and more than 36 gang rapes have occurred in Gujarat, with more than five rapes per day," the AAP said in a statement. "The chief minister and BJP leaders talk about women's safety, but today in a big city like Ahmedabad, these posters express the reality of Gujarat. Our question to the CM is whether the women of Gujarat should go out of the house at night or not?" it said.

According to PIB's press release, ₹ 3.69 lakh crore has been transferred to farmers' accounts through 19 instalments since the scheme's launch in 2019. "This is very unfortunate for the country that a hopeless opposition is living with these false hopes. All they can do is lie to the farmers and mislead them... PM Kisan Samman Nidhi has been ongoing without a break since its inception. So far, ₹ 3.75 lakh crore have been credited into he accounts of beneficiary farmers... Farmers of Kashi alone have received ₹ 900 crores," DD News quoted the Prime Minister as saying.
