KUALA LUMPUR: A 33-year-old project manager from Selangor has struck gold by winning the RM14.6mil Power Toto 6/55 Jackpot on July 6.
He attributed his win to a set of numbers inspired by his and his girlfriend's MyKad numbers.
The lucky winner revealed that he had been faithfully using the same set of numbers — 4, 8, 11, 18, 20, and 29 — for the past three years, ever since he began dating his girlfriend.
"I always play Lotto games with this winning set of numbers and would buy 8 draws in advance," STM Lottery quoted him as saying on Thursday (July 10).
He added that combining both of their MyKad numbers made the win feel "even more surreal," highlighting the sentimental value behind the selection.
Upon seeing the results last Sunday (July,) the winner admitted to having a sleepless night before making his way to the STM Lottery head office to claim the RM14,628,701.20 prize.
He added that he kept the news to himself at first, needing time to come to terms with the fact that he had become a multi-millionaire overnight.
With the newfound wealth, he plans to focus on smart investments.
STM Lottery Sdn Bhd has confirmed the jackpot win.

MAA urges govt to expedite decision on on revised OMV excise duties

MAA President, Mohd Shamsor Mohd Zain — MUHAMAD SHAHRIL ROSLI/The Star KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) has urged the government to expedite its decision-making and communication about the implementation of the new excise tax regulations under the PU(A) 402/2019 - Excise Tax Regulations (Determination of Value of Locally Manufactured Goods for Excise Duty) Regulations. MAA president Mohd Shamsor Mohd Zain said that delays and ambiguity in the decision-making process regarding the revised open market value (OMV) excise duties could result in car prices increasing by up to 30 per cent. He noted that the industry is still waiting for formal details on how the new method of calculating import and excise duties will be implemented from January 2026. "Definitely, we will have an engagement with the government on this, and hopefully we will be able to look into it as soon as possible. The next five months are a very short time for any production-related response. "When we talk about supply chains, it involves the entire logistics impact and more. We need at least six months, at a minimum, to adapt to any changes. So, we hope to receive updates on the next steps as soon as possible,' he said. Mohd Shamsor said this after the Review of Motor Traders and Manufacturers' Performance for the First Half of 2025 event held here today. He added that due to the requirements under PU(A) 402/2019, as well as relevant regulations and the Customs Act, the current formula needs to be revised to ensure it is fair and transparent. Nonetheless, he believed that the Ministry of Finance (MOF) would look into the matter more proactively to minimise or ideally avoid any impact on the industry. At the same time, Mohd Shamsor acknowledged that time is running short and that the roughly five-month window before the implementation of the reform does not provide sufficient time for manufacturers to respond, particularly in terms of the supply chain and logistics. "We need at least six months to adapt to existing changes, so we hope to get an update on the next steps as soon as possible,' he reiterated. In February, MOF denied media reports claiming that vehicle prices in Malaysia are expected to rise significantly from 2026 onwards, following the full implementation of the new excise tax regulation under PU(A) 402/2019. The ministry had earlier clarified that the claim was inaccurate and explained that MOF, together with the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, is reviewing the vehicle valuation method to ensure that taxes are imposed fairly, neutrally, and consistently. - Bernama

Developer, 6 others ordered to return RM1.13mil to JMB

The Ipoh High Court also ordered a forensic audit to be conducted after the plaintiffs were found to have proven their case on the balance of probabilities. PETALING JAYA : The High Court in Ipoh has ordered a property developer and six other defendants to refund RM1.13 million to a joint management body (JMB) after the sum was paid out for improper purposes. The developer, Haven Sdn Bhd, was also ordered to pay rental despite previously securing a 10-year rent-free concession from the JMB. Justice Abdul Wahab Mohamed said the eight plaintiffs, comprising residents and condominium owners of Haven Lakeside Residences in Tambun, had proven their case on a balance of probabilities. The eight filed the suit in 2020, claiming that the defendants had used the JMB's sinking fund to pay land amalgamation premiums and build a tennis court. About RM950,000 was paid towards the premiums, while another RM180,000 was utilised to build the tennis court. The court also found that the JMB had improperly given the developer a 10-year rent-free lease of a section of the common property, which was used to run a spa and restaurant. The six other defendants against whom judgment was entered were the joint management council (JMC), its former chairman Megat Najmuddin Megat Khas, JMC members Peter Chan and Amy Lau, the JMB, and land owner Superboom Sdn Bhd. Wahab ordered the defendants, except the JMB, to pay RM100,000 in costs to the plaintiffs. He also ordered that a forensic audit be conducted, but granted the defendants an interim stay of his ruling. Lawyer Patrick Samuel Sebastian appeared for the plaintiffs while counsel Rabinder Singh and Surindar Singh acted for the defendants.

Malaysia aims to launch National Address System in 2026, experts urge tech use to bridge gaps

In 2026, Ahmad Aswadi said MCMC aims to develop and launch the NAS system with the goal to make the system fully functional in the following year. — MUHAMAD SHAHRIL ROSLI/The Star KUALA LUMPUR: How do you send a rescue team to a distressed caller who describes his location as somewhere behind a yellow house? For Ahmad Aswadi Yusof, digital innovation and geospatial division head at the Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the lack of standardisation in address listings has posed challenges for emergency response services, for example. He cited reports of help reaching people too late because they couldn't locate the address in their system. At the National Address Conference 2025, Ahmad Aswadi said MCMC aims to develop a National Address System as the centralised database for addresses in Malaysia. "It will serve as an open address database where it can be used to update or check information related to addresses. It will also provide information to geocode addresses into coordinates with latitude and longitude," he said during a presentation at the event today (July 16). Ahmad Aswadi also presented a three-year roadmap with plans to start a pioneer project this year by working closely with local governments. In 2026, Ahmad Aswadi said MCMC aims to develop and launch the NAS system with the goal to make the system fully functional in the following year. "NAS will not reveal any personal details such as (homeowner) names. Only number and street name, locality and other address details," he added. Internet of Things solutions provider Favoriot CEO Dr Mazlan Abbas said a number of technologies can be implemented in the NAS initiative, including geographic information system (GIS) to analyse and visualise mapping data for specific information. "AI for example, can be used to make better sense of unstructured information," he said, adding that human intervention is still crucial in the process. Datin Habsah Nordin, head of PETRONAS Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence, shared the possibilities of augmenting AI for the NAS initiative. "Based on training data, AI can provide suggestions to help improve or clean up the data and even merge duplicate entries," she said. She added that Malaysia can also leverage on AI-driven satellite imagery to monitor urban growth and maintain an up-to-date address database in line with rapid development.
