Sean Payton gave a unique comparison for Broncos LB Dre Greenlaw

USA Today30-07-2025
Dre Greenlaw packs a punch.
After spending the first six years of his career with the San Francisco 49ers, the 28-year-old linebacker signed a three-year, $31.5 million contract with the Denver Broncos this spring.
Greenlaw is considered one of the NFL's best linebackers when healthy, evidenced by the fact that league executives, coaches and scouts ranked him as the ninth-best LB in 2025 even after he missed most of 2024 due to injury. Turn on a Broncos game this season, and you can't miss No. 57's physicality on defense.
'I think it's one of his greatest strengths," coach Sean Payton said of Greenlaw's physicality. "He plays the position in such a way where you can't help but notice it on film. His pad level, his strength, his lower body strength. It's impressive. I'm glad we have him.'
In his last healthy season, Greenlaw totaled 120 tackles, four pass breakups and 1.5 sacks in 15 games with the 49ers in 2023. He's now set to anchor Denver's inside linebacker room, and Payton used a unique comparison for the LB's style.
'He plays like Mike Tyson," Payton said. "He's tough. He's physical. He's built that way. There's not a lot of leaky yardage. He's a knockback tackler. They stop where he hits them. There's an intensity to how he plays. He's one of those players where if you put the film on and didn't say anything, at some point early you would ask, 'Who is this guy?''
A linebacker being compared to a boxer? Believe it or not, Greenlaw's familiar with the comparison.
'Yeah, I've gotten that before for sure," Greenlaw said. "I don't know, I just like to play football and go out there, and I give it my all. You never know when it's going to be your last chance on the field, your last chance to play, so you want to make a statement anytime you can. I just love doing it and am thankful to be able to do it.'
Greenlaw will serve as one of the two starting inside linebackers in defensive coordinator Vance Joseph's scheme this fall. He will be joined by Alex Singleton (after Singleton returns from a broken thumb with a club) when the Broncos host the Tennessee Titans in their season opener on Sept. 7 (view the full schedule).

Top 2026 guard Jenica Lewis lists Notre Dame as one of her five finalists

Top class of 2026 shooting guard Jenica Lewis has narrowed down her list of schools to five, and Notre Dame has made the cut. The 5-foot-10 Johnston (Johnston, IA) product, who was a member of the Des Moines Register's 2025 All-Iowa girls basketball team this past season after helping lead her school to a second-straight Class 5A state championship, is down to the Fighting Irish, Iowa, North Carolina, Oregon and TCU. Lewis averaged 18 points, 3.5 steals and 3.4 assists per game as she led the Dragons in total points, assists and steals in 2024-25. Earlier in her recruitment, it appeared that the Hawkeyes had the in-state lead, but this has become more of a national recruitment after the departure of Iowa assistant Raina Harmon, who is now the head coach at FGCU. Lewis would be an absolute coup for Niele Ivey and the Irish if she were to choose to play in South Bend. Auburn basketball reveals jersey numbers for new-look roster

Auburn basketball experienced a complete roster overhaul during the offseason as many of its stars graduated or found other opportunities through the transfer portal. The Tigers will have a fresh starting lineup this season, as last season's Final Four starters have departed from the program. Bruce Pearl will work to replace the production of graduating stars, such as forward Johni Broome, sharp-shooting Miles Kelly, and floor general Denver Jones. However, Auburn found success within the transfer portal by landing several talented frontcourt additions, such as Mississippi State forward Keshawn Murphy and UCF forward Keyshawn Hall. Pearl also dipped into junior college and the international circuit to fill out his roster by landing Abdul Bashir from Casper College, and two players with center-esque size in Emeka Opurum and Filip Jovic. Despite adding many new names, Auburn will have one key player from last season's Final Four squad in Tahaad Pettiford. As a freshman, Pettiford averaged 11.6 points per game with 3.0 assists and 2.2 rebounds while serving as the backup point guard. He is projected to lead the Tigers as the floor general this season. Here's a look at Auburn's revamped roster, complete with new jersey numbers for the 2025-26 season. PFF ranks all 32 NFL offensive lines (Broncos are No. 2)

The secret to the success of a great ground attack and for a quarterback to succeed through the air is contingent on how the offensive line performs. According to Pro Football Focus, the Broncos have done just that in putting an excellent offensive line together. In a recently written article by PFF's Zoltan Buday, the Broncos, who only rank behind the Philadelphia Eagles, have the second-best offensive line in the NFL, led by Quinn Meinerz. Meinerz gained a significant accomplishment last season by being named a first-team All-Pro. With all five starting Broncos offensive linemen returning, it made the Broncos' starting unit an easy vote for being one of the NFL's best. 'All five of Denver's starting offensive linemen in 2024, each of whom logged more than 800 snaps, return for 2025," Buday wrote for PFF. "The Broncos' offensive line led the NFL with a 90.8 PFF pass-blocking efficiency rating last season, allowing only 110 pressures on 677 snaps. Right guard Quinn Meinerz has emerged as one of the best players at the position, highlighted by his 87.3 PFF overall grade, which ranked second among guards in the league last season.' The Broncos are already in training camp, preparing for the 2025 season. With quarterback Bo Nix in his second year and head coach Sean Payton entering his third, this offensive line unit has the chance to further set the Broncos up for success.
