OPEN// PM inspects central water lab in Assiut
ASSIUT, Upper Egypt, April 10 (MENA) - Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli inspected on Thursday the central lab for drinking water during his visit to the water station in the Upper Egyptian governorate of Assiut, which is now under development.
Madbouli listened to a presentation by Chemist Islam Mohamed Hassanein, head of the labs and water quality sector at the Water and Sanitation Company, on the laboratory which is being implemented as part of the Integrated Water Solutions Technical Support Project (IWSSTA), which aims to automate and develop asset management as part of the company's plans to improve operational efficiency and preserve investments.
The lab covers an area of 1,200 square meters.
He said the laboratory is supplied with the latest-of-the-art equipment to serve the governorates of Assiut and the New Valley.
It can also receive samples from Upper Egypt governorates as well, he added. (MENA)

OPEN// President Sisi urges expanding base of beneficiaries of "Digilians" initiative
CAIRO, May 28 (MENA) - President Abdel Fattah El Sisi Wednesday stressed the need to continue with efforts to complete all executive procedures related to implementing the "Digilians" (digital pioneers) initiative within the set time-frame. He also called for studying ways to expand the base of beneficiaries of the initiative in order to achieve a qualitative leap in training cadres in the fields of communications and information technology. President Sisi made the remarks on Wednesday during a meeting with Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr Amr Talaat, and Director of the Egyptian Military Academy Lieutenant General Ashraf Salem Zahir. The president directed to cooperate with specialized institutions in various technological sciences both locally and internationally in light of the state's strategy to build digital capabilities and specialized technology cadres. He also stressed the importance of proceeding with the implementation of digital transformation plans and development of the country's technological infrastructure. During the meeting, the president reviewed the latest developments concerning Digilians initiative, especially with regard the executive procedures for enrollment in the initiative, due to start in September 2025, Presidential Spokesman Mohamed Shennawy said. Within this context, Minister Talaat said the initiative is open for all youth of both genders, from various academic and professional specializations, and from all Egyptian governorates. The selection process will be based on objective criteria. He pointed out that the study programs will include multiple tracks, such as intensive diplomas, specialized diplomas, professional master's degrees, and academic master's degrees. All programs will be offered completely free of charge, including accommodation, living expenses, and training, he said, adding that the curricula will cover a comprehensive set of technical, personal, linguistic, life, and leadership and freelancing skills. The spokesperson also noted that President Sisi stood on the agreements being signed with a large number of international and local companies operating in Egypt to receive trainees after completing the theoretical study period for practical training to acquire technical skills. The initiative will focus on supporting trainees to present a profitable technology-based project idea, participate in Egypt's digital projects, and assist all trainees in creating accounts on freelancing platforms. OPEN// PM meets Oxford university delegation for talks on coop. in advanced cancer treatment
CAIRO, May 22 (MENA) - Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli met with a delegation from the University of Oxford at the government headquarters in the New Administrative Capital to discuss collaboration on advanced cancer treatment and medical research. Attendees included Egypt's Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Ayman Ashour, Cairo University President Mohamed Sami Abdel Sadek and Oxford's Pro-Vice Chancellor for Innovation Chas Bountra. The discussions centered on a new and advanced cancer treatment method developed by Oxford along with ways to transfer this technology to Egypt, particularly through partnerships with Cairo University and Hospital 500/500. Representatives from Caring Cross and GermFree, US-based organizations specializing in gene and cell therapies and cleanroom infrastructure, outlined plans for cooperation with Egypt to make cutting-edge cancer treatments more affordable and accessible. Brazil and India are already engaged in similar collaborations, they pointed out. The proposed project includes establishing Egypt's first applied research center for advanced medical products, training medical staff, and creating a national platform for gene and cell therapy development—positioning Egypt as a regional leader in this field. Madbouli expressed full support for the project and directed the preparation of an implementation plan. He also proposed adopting it as a national initiative, similar to Egypt's successful Hepatitis C treatment campaign, to expand access and reduce costs for cancer patients nationwide. OPEN// No aftershocks detected following Mediterranean earthquake
CAIRO, May 14 (MENA) - The National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) announced that, so far, the instruments of the National Seismic Network—affiliated with the Institute—have not recorded any aftershocks following a recent earthquake in the Mediterranean Sea. Earlier, at 1:51:15 AM on Wednesday, the stations of the National Seismic Network recorded an earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was located 631 kilometers north of Rashid, or Rosetta, which is a port city of the Nile Delta, 65 km (40 mi) east of Alexandria, in Egypt's Beheira governorate. In an official statement, NRIAG acting president Dr. Taha Tawfiq Rabeh clarified that the seismic event occurred at a latitude of 35.12 degrees north, a longitude of 27.0 degrees east, and at a depth of 76 kilometers. He also confirmed that while the tremor was felt by residents, no casualties or property damage were reported. (MENA) R E E/
