Gary Kelly: Dundee ice hockey club retire shirt number of teenage star who died at Ibiza Rocks hotel

Sky News23-07-2025
The teammates of a Scottish ice hockey player who died in a suspected fall from a hotel balcony in Ibiza are opting to retire his shirt number for the upcoming season out of "respect" for the teenager.
Gary Kelly, 19, who played for the Dundee Stars, died at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel in San Antonio on Monday.
His club has announced that "as a mark of respect" for Mr Kelly, one of his teammates has opted to change his shirt number for the upcoming season.
In a social media post, the club said: "As a mark of respect, Dominick Jaglar has opted to change his number for the upcoming season from 45 to 72.
"45 was the number Gary Kelly wore on two occasions, making his Elite League debut for his hometown team, the Dundee Stars, in 2024-25."
Flowers, pictures and team tops have been left in tribute outside the Dundee Ice Arena, the club's home venue, with the club thanking those who had done so.
A fundraising page has been set up for the Kelly family, with more than £19,000 collected by Wednesday morning.
Tam McGeary, who organised the GoFundMe, wrote: "We are all feeling the loss of young Gary Kelly.
"And I know you can't put a price on life. But hopefully we can help the family through this, as a nicer young man and family you would struggle to find."
John Colley, chairman of Scottish Ice Hockey and Aberdeen Lynx - where Mr Kelly also played - said the entire hockey community is still "coming to terms with the devastating loss".
He added: "Gary was a young man who left a lasting impression on everyone he met - not just through his incredible talent on the ice, but through his warmth, generosity, and infectious charisma.
"We are a hockey family, and Gary was a cherished part of that family. His absence will be felt deeply - not just in Aberdeen, but across the Scottish hockey community and further afield.
"Above all, Gary valued family - both his own and the wider hockey family. As we reflect on the joy and impact he brought to so many, we want to come together to honour his memory and the legacy he leaves behind."
In a statement issued following the news of Mr Kelly's death, the Dundee Stars said everyone at the club was "heartbroken".
The club added: "Gary was [a] hugely talented and charismatic individual who had a great future ahead of him.
"His loss will impact many in the ice hockey community and beyond. He will be sadly missed.
"We respect and support the family's request for privacy at this extremely difficult time."
The incident came after another Scottish tourist, Evan Thomson, 26, fell to his death at the same hotel premises earlier in July.

Kamikaze football survives in the heat of Athens... but Martin's men can't keep giving away so many chances

Well, if nothing else, Rangers are certainly an entertaining watch under Russell Martin. Terrifying, yes. But entertaining. Robust defensive resolve — the kind which has underpinned so much of the club's success on the continent in recent years — has been chucked aside within weeks in favour of kamikaze football. But, for the second time in eight days, Martin's side were ultimately rewarded for all that risk. Just like he did at Ibrox, Djeidi Gassama once again came off the bench to make the difference. The scoreline could — and should — have been very different by the time the former Sheffield Wednesday wide man entered the fray. Until then, it was a carbon copy of last week's meeting. Rangers messing about with the ball at the back. Panathinaikos messing up every opportunity which came their way. James Tavernier, Nasser Djiga and Max Aarons all took turns at putting it on a plate. All, somehow, got away with it. Martin's stamp on the side is clear for all to see. Well, at least those who could bare to look. But good grief, some of these players are a million miles away from being able to implement this new style. Motherwell will fancy their chances at Fir Park on Saturday. They surely won't be as profligate as the Greeks were here. Even when they did take the lead through Filip Duricic, the finish was dreadful, albeit enough to beat a slightly bamboozled and hopelessly exposed Jack Butland. It wasn't much better at the other end. Danilo had a pop 25 seconds in, but that was pretty much his lot for the night. For all his work off the ball, the Brazilian saw little of it. Last week's hero Findlay Curtis barely got a sniff either. It was no surprise to see him hooked for Gassama shortly before the hour. The 21-year-old's introduction proved to be the spark his side needed. Credit where it's due to his colleagues as well. The overall display from back to front in the last third of the game was much improved as they demonstrated the composure and authority to see out the tie in relative comfort. Job done.

Panathinaikos 1-1 Rangers (agg 1-3): What Martin said

Rangers head coach Russell Martin told BBC Scotland: "I've just said to the players in the dressing room, I'm so proud of them."To be five weeks into the process, from where they were to where they are is incredible."It's never easy away from home. A really difficult place to come. They really dug in and that's going to be important for us. "Big John [Souttar] and Nasser [Djiga] were fantastic. Jack Butland's been brilliant over the two games; we need to rely on him less."We spoke about the importance of the subs before the game and they did great."It's no mean feat. We've qualified for the Europa League and now we can really attack the Champions League."We will get better. The group will grow so much from this."

Gray coy on Triantis return

David Gray says a return to Hibs for Nectar Triantis was always a "potential opportunity" but insists the club have other transfer targets to pursue if a move doesn't reports suggesting Triantis won't be returning to the club this summer from Sunderland, Gray remained coy but was keen to emphasise he is not their only transfer target."If that's what the lie of the land is…" Gray commented on the added: "I think I've been very consistent in saying that, quite clearly, Nectar has done so well for us last season, we know that."We've also been very clear that it's not just Nectar Triantis, we can't put everything into one position or one player, we know that, so the hard work has been going on."And while it was still a potential opportunity, you'd always look to try and explore it because of how well he'd done. But it was always going to be that, with it being his second loan spell here, how well he'd done, his parent club getting promoted and what his situation was going to be."Naturally, so we are constantly looking to see what can be done to try and improve the squad, but clearly my focus right now is tomorrow night and the game."Gray also said new recruits Jamie McGrath and Josh Mulligan's previous Scottish football experience has been key to their immediate impact at the Aberdeen midfielder McGrath scored in the first-leg win over Midtjylland last week and ex-Dundee player Mulligan also made his debut, with Hibs hosting the Danes tomorrow night in a tie locked at 1-1."It's been great. Clearly they were playing in our league last year so you can get a sense of what they're like pretty quickly," said Gray."They are two quality players that can add straight away to what we're looking to do and then I also think that's a reflection on the group that have been here, the core that welcome new players, make them settle quickly."Gray also said he won't rush record signing Klidje into action, adding: "There is not too much expectation from me in terms of demand to try and get him minutes straight away."
