The internet goes wild after 5-star RB Savion Hiter commits to Michigan football

USA Today20 hours ago
It was a long wait to see what he would do, but Savion Hiter finally decided that Ann Arbor is his new home.
Michigan football's No. 1 target in the 2026 is also the No. 1 running back in the country. The five-star running back -- rated the No. 9 player in the country according to the 247Sports Composite -- ended up choosing the Wolverines over Tennessee, Ohio State, and Georgia in an emotional ceremony in Virginia on Tuesday, thus closing one of the most high-profile recruitments in the 2026 cycle.
Now that Hiter is a Wolverine, there were naturally some big reactions to the news. Here are some of our favorite reactions on X (formerly Twitter).

All eyes on top-rated recruit Bryce Underwood at QB for No. 14 Michigan in Sherrone Moore's 2nd year

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Bryce Underwood is ready to have all eyes on him this season, playing quarterback for No. 14 Michigan hailed as the top-rated recruit in the country. He's also ready to take some hits. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Underwood told two reporters earlier this summer — at a car dealership that leveraged his name, image and likeness to draw fans for autographs — that he has put on 15 pounds of muscle to get bigger, stronger and quicker. 'It's made me more explosive,' Underwood said. 'I feel way more faster.' The Wolverines trail four Big Ten teams in the AP Top 25, but Underwood said people should expect a lot from them on both sides of the ball. 'Offense and defense that they never seen before,' he said. Second-year coach Sherrone Moore, who might name a starting quarterback on Monday, said Underwood's talent and comprehension of the offense under new coordinator Chip Lindsey are what have stood out the most so far from the freshman. 'Consistency is the biggest thing,' he said. 'Don't turn the ball over, command the offense, make plays.' Sign-stealingMoore will be suspended for the third and fourth game of the season as a self-imposed sanction in response to the NCAA investigation into the sign-stealing scandal that has loomed over the program for two years. The NCAA also suspended Moore for the 2026 opener, fined the school tens of millions of dollars and reduced official visits by 25% this season. Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said the governing body made errors interpreting its bylaws, adding that conclusions were made that were contrary to the evidence. 'We will appeal this decision to ensure a fair result and we will consider all other options,' Manuel said. On the ground Michigan expects to take pressure off Underwood with a potentially dynamic duo in the backfield. Justice Haynes, who started six games last season at Alabama, and sophomore Jordan Marshall, who ran for 100 yards against the Crimson Tide in a bowl game win, are expected to split time at running back to give the team quite a 1-2 punch. 'They compete in the weight room every single day, push each other and they just work as hard as they can,' Underwood said. Over-under Michigan was 8-5 in Moore's debut season, closing with three straight wins, including a fourth in a row against rival Ohio State and over Alabama in a bowl game. The Wolverines are projected to have similar results this year. The Wolverines over-under is 8 1/2 wins, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. Michigan's mantra Robby Emery, director of character development for Michigan football, has tried to set the tone with coaches and players to control what they can and to let the rest go. 'We're really living by this motto of TNT — today not tomorrow,' Moore said. The schedule Michigan opens with New Mexico on Aug. 30 under the lights at the Big House. The Wolverines travel to play Oklahoma, where Moore was an offensive lineman nearly 20 years ago, in Week 2. Moore will miss a home game against Central Michigan and the Big Ten opener at Nebraska. The Wolverines play rival Michigan State on the road Oct. 25 and close the regular season at home against rival and third-ranked Ohio State on Nov. 29. Michigan is not scheduled to play No. 2 Penn State, No. 7 Oregon or No. 12 Illinois. ___ AP college football: and Sign up for the AP's college football newsletter:

Semaj Morgan's maturity, leadership boost Michigan's wide receiver room for 2025 season

Since he arrived in Ann Arbor, local product Semaj Morgan has been something of a fan favorite, if for no other reason than he's been an amazing sound byte. Yes, he's made big plays -- such as the long return in the 2023 Big Ten Championship Game -- but as he's still working to find his niche, the words haven't stopped flowing. But now it's starting to sound like we're getting a new version of Morgan, one that better understands he's getting older and has more responsibility on his team. Last week, Morgan said that he's deepened his faith and that's led the way. With that, he's maturing and learning to be less about himself and more about the team. "Throughout the offseason, I'm just working on my relationship with my Heavenly Father, Jesus," Morgan said. "It just put me on a different type of focus. I'm still the same person. I'm still goofy and all that. But when I get in here, it's like a different switch change for me. And I like that about myself. "As the years go on, I started to get more mature and understand certain things better, understand how to be in certain environments. So, yeah, I definitely think compared to last year, I'm more mature. I was more goofy last year than this year." With age also comes leadership. Morgan is entering his junior year and that means there are a lot of younger players looking up to him. Feeling like he's faster and more explosive, the play on the field should be better -- especially given his experience. But one place he feels like he's grown is in keeping the energy up, no matter the situation. "I feel like I'm a leader. You know what I'm saying?" Morgan said. "I feel like I'm a person that's going to get us started with energy. Or, if we in a slump, I'm the type of person that's going to get us out of that slump." Fans will get the opportunity to see Morgan and the new-look wide receivers room on August 30 when the Wolverines host New Mexico for the 2025 season opener at The Big House.

Michigan Lands Commitment From Top RB Prospect Savion Hiter

The Michigan Wolverines are already having a better week than their last one, as they secured a 2026 commitment from five-star running back prospect Savion Hiter. Hiter announced his commitment to Michigan at his high school, Louisa County High in Virginia. He chose the Wolverines over Tennessee, Georgia and Michigan's chief rival, Ohio State. Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore and running backs coach Tony Alford – who was previously Ohio State's running back coach from 2015-23 – were "instrumental" in getting Hiter to commit to Michigan instead of Tennessee, according to ESPN. The 5-foot-11 back weighs in at 200 pounds and is the No. 1 running back prospect in the country, as well as the top player in Virginia, according to 247Sports. Hiter is viewed as a potential NFL player who thrives while running inside or outside, per 247Sports. As he heads into his senior season at Louisa County High School, Hiter has already proven to be a force in the backfield. He rushed for 1,698 yards and 26 rushing touchdowns on 156 carries in the 2024 season with another 199 receiving yards on top of that, following a transfer from Woodberry Forest High School, where he played in 2023. Moreover, Hiter is a two-way player who totaled 56 tackles, seven sacks, an interception and three defensive touchdowns in 2024. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
