What makes a man in his 50s cheat with a woman OLDER than his wife? Relationship expert weighs in after Coldplay 'kiss cam scandal'

Daily Mail21-07-2025
The Coldplay concert kiss cam footage that exposed a tech CEO embracing his female HR chief has become the subject of global headlines.
But as the details of Astronomer boss Andy Byron and his employee Kristin Cabot's apparent relationship came to light, it raised even more questions.
One of the talking points that surprised online pundits, if they in fact were having an affair, was: 'Why did he cheat with an older woman?'
Now, an Australian dating expert has offered an explanation as to why a 50-year-old man might opt for a woman two years his senior given so many choose the cliché 'younger model' route.
Perth-based matchmaker Louanne Ward said there's a pervading stereotype that affairs always involve an older middle-aged men cheating on their spouse with a much younger and more attractive woman.
But Louanne debunked this myth, explaining that the apparent cheating circumstances unveiled in the viral video are more common than people may expect.
'When news broke that Andy Byron and Kristin Cabot were caught in an intimate embrace at the Coldplay concert while both still married the internet exploded,' she said.
'And yet… he didn't 'trade in' for a younger, sexier model.'
Louanne told FEMAIL she wants to dispel the common 'cliché'.
'There's a longstanding stereotype that when middle-aged men cheat, they do so with someone younger, sexier, more idealising, looks up to them or is an opportunist looking for some form of gain. Society almost expects it to the point where people look out for that type of dynamic,' she explained.
The Aussie matchmaker then delivered an 'uncomfortable truth' about this type of scenario.
'When the "other woman" is also married, established, and successful in her own right - there's no clear gain, no power imbalance, no obvious manipulation. They both have so much to lose and yet, they risk it.
'That tells us the connection is emotional.'
Louanne said that in these sorts of infidelity circumstances, the affair often develops out of a shared emotional 'resonance' amongst the parties that has nothing to do with age or appearance.
'[H]e doesn't choose her for status, youth or convenience it's for resonance.'
The matchmaker stressed that beyond the recent headlines - and the memes - there was also an important 'societal myth' that we should 'retire' about men only ever cheating for 'youth and beauty'.
'Sometimes… they cheat "up" for something they've never had. Sometimes they cheat up because its a safer option,' Louanne said.
'But let's not forget something important. Cheating is NEVER the fault of the person being cheated on.'
'Affairs are a reflection of the internal void in the person who stepped out.'
She explained that although there's never 'justification for betrayal', dispelling the myth that man only ever cheat 'down' was important for anyone in a relationship to understand - and particularly those who find themselves in a similar situation.
'Sometimes when connection is missing, even the most successful person will still crave significance,' Louanne explained - adding that this can be found in someone irrespective of their age.
The suspicious relationship between Mr Byron and Ms Cabot was exposed during Coldplay's sold-out show at Gillette Stadium in Boston last Tuesday July 15 when the pair were filmed cosying up during the concert.
After they were projected on the stadium kiss cam, a stunned Mr Byron quickly dropped his arm and ducked down out of sight while a horrified Ms Cabot turned away, covering her face with both hands.
When Coldplay frontman Chris Martin clocked the couple's reaction to the kiss-cam, he cheekily remarked: 'They're either having an affair… or they're very shy.'
Their awkward reaction, along with the frontman's commentary, sent the moment viral online.
The fallout was swift.
Mr Byron, who had been placed on leave following the incident, officially resigned amid an internal investigation by Astronomer.
In a statement, the company said: 'Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met. Andy Byron has tendered his resignation, and the Board of Directors has accepted.'
The scandal not only impacted the lives of Mr Byron and Ms Cabot, but also their respective partners, Megan Kerrigan and Andrew Cabot.
Ms Kerrigan, who is 50, appears to have since deleted family photos with Mr Byron and changed her surname on Facebook since the incident.

Andy Carroll 'DUMPS' Lou Teasdale after police questioned him over boozy rows in Greece as he unfollows her and tells pals he's 'sick' of her demands

Andy Carroll has reportedly dumped his girlfriend Lou Teasdale following a string of heated rows. It comes just two months after it was reported that the former Premier League striker, 36, was questioned twice by Greek police over a series of bust-ups with Lou, 41, while the pair holidayed in Mykonos, Greece. The pair, who were together for just over a year, have now unfollowed each other on social media and Andy has wiped all trace of Lou from his Instagram. A source told The Sun: 'Andy got sick of Lou's demands and her influencer lifestyle. 'She's always posting on social media and he hates that. He told her it was over this week. He's single now.' The father-of-five returned to the UK with Dagenham & Redbridge last month after a two-year spell in France. The insider added: 'It's been a tough time and now he's back in the UK, he just wants to focus on football and his kids. 'He hates the influencer lifestyle. He has no interest in posing for loved-up pics.' Daily Mail has approached Andy and Lou's representatives for comment. The couple's last public outing was at an Oasis gig at the end of July, where they packed on the PDA, proving they were still together. The date night came after the ex footballer was interrogated about the arguments with his make-up artist lover in a restaurant and at their hotel on the Greek party island, The Sun on Sunday reports. Speaking about the first incident, a worker at the Nikolus Tavern told the newspaper: 'He seemed very drunk and furious with his partner. 'He was using very bad words. It was improper behaviour. The woman looked very upset.' According to the restaurant worker, police arrived and took the ex-Liverpool, Newcastle United and England striker aside for a chat, before he was later allowed back to girlfriend Lou. 'Police spoke to him. He was allowed to return, and the couple left after paying for their meal. Andy was very calm when the police arrived — he stood up and spoke to them outside the restaurant', the restaurant worker added. Just hours later, cops were called again by hotel staff following reports of damage in their room. Daily Mail understands that the former England forward - once Britain's most expensive Premier League footballer when bought by Liverpool from Newcastle for £35million - was taken to the police station for questioning, but he was not arrested and no further action was taken. The incident was confirmed by a hotel employee, who claimed Carroll broke the door. That night, Lou left the hotel and spent the night at Soho Roc House. A joint statement from the couple given to The Sun said: 'Whilst having a private dinner in a restaurant on a quiet holiday in Mykonos, we had a heated discussion of the sort that most couples have had on occasion. It quickly became apparent to the police that there was no reason for them to be there. 'We went outside the restaurant with them together as they insisted they wanted to 'look after' us. 'As far as we are concerned, the situation has been blown out of all proportion by an interested member of the public. No one was arrested and no one was charged with anything. We are very happy, in love and looking forward to our future together and we are disappointed that a private disagreement has become a public matter.' The pair began dating last year after he separated from his TOWIE star wife Billi Mucklow last September. Carroll and Mucklow called it quits divorce after two years of turbulent marriage, the footballer confirmed last year. In 2022, their wedding was almost called off when Carroll was pictured drunkenly passed out in bed with two women in Dubai on his stag do. Mucklow forgave him after one of the women insisted nothing sexual happened. Less than two years after their nuptials, the couple's marriage was over - with Carroll confirming they had started divorce proceedings after 'a hard few months for our family'. Carroll said in a statement at the time: 'Billi and I have privately separated earlier this year and we are under way with our divorce proceedings'. 'It has been a hard few months for our family and we continue to move forward amicably for our children.' Carroll and Mucklow have three children together Arlo, Wolf, and Marvel Mae and she also raises his two children Emilie Rose, 15, and Lucas, 14 from his past relationship.

Beloved Sydney restaurant announces shock closure after five years - and fans are heartbroken

One of Sydney 's favourite vegan eateries will shut down at the end of the month, and loyal customers say the loss will leave a huge hole in their weekends. Green Sprouts Chinese Vegan Restaurant on Military Road in Neutral Bay revealed the news in a heartfelt post to Instagram and Facebook, confirming its final service will be on August 31. 'After nearly five incredible years, Green Sprouts Vegan Chinese Restaurant will be closing its doors for good on August 31st,' the statement read. 'Since opening in October 2020, we've had the honour of welcoming thousands of vegan and non-vegan diners from all over Sydney, and we're grateful to have been voted one of the best vegan restaurants multiple times. 'This journey wouldn't have been possible without your love and support. While it's heartbreaking to say goodbye, we are truly grateful for every moment shared. 'Thank you for being part of our story - and come to say goodbye in the next couple of weeks.' The Military Road venue quickly became a cult favourite for its authentic Hong Kong-style yum cha, complete with dim sum carts wheeled to diners' tables and a 100 per cent plant-based menu that won over both vegans and meat-eaters. As news of the closure spread, loyal customers filled the comments with tributes. One said they were 'devastated' and admitted they had 'no idea where to go for yum cha now.' Another described it as 'the saddest news' and vowed to visit before the month's end to say goodbye. Others revealed they travelled from interstate just to eat there, with one Newcastle customer admitting they made a 'special trip' every time they came to Sydney. Many urged the owners to keep them updated if they start anything similar elsewhere. Some diners became emotional recalling their favourite dishes, from the famed turnip cakes to the mango custard buns, black sesame balls, bean curd rolls, and vegan duck pancakes. One regular said the restaurant had been their 'go-to for every birthday and special occasion' and praised the food as 'better than the real thing.' Another wrote, 'I hope this is not the end of your vegan restaurant dreams - your food is incredible.' The shock announcement comes amid a wave of high-profile Sydney restaurant closures. The Military Road venue quickly became a cult favourite for its authentic Hong Kong-style yum cha, complete with dim sum carts wheeled to diners' tables and a 100 per cent plant-based menu that won over both vegans and meat-eaters In June, two of Sydney's best-known waterfront venues - Saké and El Camino Cantina at Manly Wharf - shut down after 15 years on the lease, following what hospitality group Hunter St. Hospitality described as a 'commercial decision.' In mid-July, award-winning Sri Lankan favourite Lankan Filling Station in Darlinghurst revealed it will soon serve its final hoppers after seven years, with chef-owner O Tama Carey calling it 'the end of an era.' For Green Sprouts fans, however, the countdown is on - with just over two weeks left to savour one last meal before the doors close for good. Many are already planning farewell visits, while others admit they still can't quite believe the city's best-known vegan yum cha will soon be gone.
