2026 Porsche 911 4S Variants Bring AWD Back into the Mix

Car and Driver02-07-2025
The 2026 Porsche 911 is reviving the all-wheel-drive 4S trim for the Carrera coupe and cabriolet as well as the Targa models.
The new 4S models sport the same 473-hp twin-turbo flat-six as the Carrera S, making them 30 horsepower more powerful than their predecessors.
Preliminary pricing puts the Carrera 4S at around $156K, the Carrera 4S Cabriolet at about $170K, and the Targa 4S at roughly $171K.
Porsche is famous for splitting hairs—and rightly so. It shouldn't be scientifically possible to produce so many variations of the same car that continue to feel distinct, and yet here we are. Starting with the 2026 model year, Porsche is reviving the all-wheel-drive 4S trim for the 911 Carrera coupe, Carrera cabriolet, and Targa models.
The new 4S models house the same 473-hp version of the twin-turbo flat-six found in the rest of the Carrera S lineup. The engine pairs with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (PDK); there's no manual available. When using the Sport Chrono package's launch-control system, Porsche claims the new 4S sprints from zero to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds. We haven't yet had the chance to test the current Carrera S, but considering we managed to get the 388-hp base Carrera to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds in our testing, we expect the 4S will be even quicker.

As with every other model equipped with Porsche's traction-management (PTM) system, the torque split on the 4S models is rear-biased by default but sends extra power to the front axle if required. As with their predecessors, the front differential on the new 4S models is water-cooled and uses an electromechanically controlled clutch.
Along with the rest of the Carrera S lineup, the new 4S models borrow from the previous GTS generation's parts bin. That includes pilfering that model's upgraded brakes, sport-tuned exhaust, and improved dampers.

As could be expected, preliminary pricing slots the 4S models between the Carrera S models and the more expensive GTS models. The Carrera 4S coupe will start at around $156K, the Carrera 4S cabriolet at about $170K, and the Targa 4S should come in at around $171K. Porsche said it hasn't yet confirmed those prices, so they could change before deliveries start later this year.

Ferrari's Leclerc on pole for Hungarian GP

Charles Leclerc grabbed the first pole position of the season for Ferrari on Saturday for the Hungarian Grand Prix. The Monegasque driver will share the front row on Sunday with McLaren's Oscar Piastri. McLaren's Lando Norris will start from the second row alongside fellow Briton George Russell who was fourth for Mercedes. "I honestly have no words, it's probably one of the best pole positions I've ever had because it's the most unexpected for sure," said Leclerc. The 27-year-old went late in the final minutes of a closely-contested session to clock a best lap in one minute and 15.372 seconds in changing conditions, leaving his rivals frustrated as they failed to improve on their first run times. He took pole by 0.026 seconds ahead of series leader Piastri and by 0.041sec ahead of the Australian's team-mate and title rival Norris, with Russell 0.053sec adrift in a breathtakingly close finish. It was Leclerc's first pole of the year, his first in Budapest and the 27th of his career. It was Ferrari's first pole in Hungary since Sebastian Vettel in 2017. "The whole qualifying has been extremely difficult and when I say that I'm not exaggerating," said Leclerc of the windy conditions at the Hungaroring. "It was super difficult for us to get to Q2 and Q3, in Q3 the conditions changed a little bit and everything became a lot trickier and I knew I had to just do a clean lap to target third. "At the end of the day it's pole position and I definitely did not expect that." hdy/ea/nf

Charles Leclerc Claims Shocking First Pole of the Year for Ferrari as Hamilton Feels 'Useless'

It's a tale of two Ferraris as Charles Leclerc grabbed an unexpected pole position ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix and Lewis Hamilton failed to advance out of Q2, putting up the 12th-best lap of the session. Leclerc's final qualifying time was 0.026 seconds faster than Oscar Piastri in the lead McLaren; the Ferrari driver was faster than the McLaren in turns six and seven, making up the most time. Leclerc also had amazing straight line speed on the closing straight to close out his shocking qualifying victory. Lando Norris will start on the second row, qualifying behind his teammate. George Russell in the first Mercedes will complete the second row. The Aston Martins are off to the best start of an F1 weekend this year, as Fernando Alonso qualified fifth with Lance Stroll just behind in sixth. Rookie Gabriel Bortoleto continues a great qualifying run, pushing the Sauber to seventh ahead of Max Verstappen in eighth. The Red Bull of Verstappen was on its final qualifying lap ahead of Leclerc's pole-winning lap. Liam Lawson and Issac Hadjar in the Racing Bulls wrapped up the top ten ahead of Oliver Bearman. On the other side of the Ferrari garage, Lewis Hamilton is feeling 'useless'. "I'm just useless," Hamilton told F1TV. "I drove terribly. It is what it is." This is the third qualifying in a row, including Spa's sprint qualifying, that Hamilton failed to advance to Q3. Last week in Spa, he was out in the first round on Friday and Saturday. Hamilton is having his hardest season since he joined the grid in 2008, as he adjusts to the Ferrari, which has been underperforming expectations. Lewis Hamilton says he's 'useless' and suggests a driver change at Ferrari after teammate takes pole

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Lewis Hamilton called himself 'absolutely useless' and suggested Ferrari should change drivers after he qualified 12th for the Hungarian Grand Prix and teammate Charles Leclerc took pole position. It was a new low in a difficult first season with Ferrari for seven-time Formula 1 champion Hamilton, who qualified outside the top 10 for the second race in a row. "I'm useless, absolutely useless," Hamilton told British broadcaster Sky Sports. 'The team have no problem. You've seen the car's on pole. So they probably need to change driver.' Hamilton had said 'every time, every time' over the radio after he was eliminated in the second part of qualifying. That signified that 'it's me every time,' he clarified to Sky later. Hamilton has yet to finish on the podium in a Grand Prix race with Ferrari, with a best finish of fourth, though he did win a sprint race in China in March. Leclerc is fifth in the standings, only one position ahead of Hamilton, but has five podium finishes in 2005. In Sunday's race, he'll aim to give Ferrari its first F1 win since October. Last week, Hamilton said it was 'crunch time' and revealed he's been holding a series of meetings with Ferrari executives to discuss improvements and ensure he has more of a say in how the team develops its car for the sweeping regulation changes coming in 2026. ___ AP auto racing: The Associated Press
