What Tigers rookie pitcher is ‘proud of' after dominating Diamondbacks
The Detroit Tigers are starting to look like themselves again as they have won two games in a row after losing 12 of 13. The most recent win came against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night, and rookie Troy Melton was on the mound for the Tigers. His first start was last week against the Pittsburgh Pirates, and it was a shaky one. However, he looked outstanding on Monday night as he pitched seven shutout innings in a 5-1 victory for Detroit.
Not only did Troy Melton have a successful start, but he had one of the best outings that we have seen from a Tigers pitcher this season. He only threw 87 pitches in seven innings, and struck out five and walked none. He gave up just five hits. Melton was outstanding, and he is proud of the adjustment that he has made since his last outing.
'Honestly, that's one of the things I had to learn in professional baseball, being a little less emotional and taking things pitch by pitch,' he said, according to an article from MLB.com. 'It's a very conscious effort, but it's something I'm proud of.'
Dillon Dingler was behind the plate catching Melton on Monday night, and he was impressed with what he saw. Every pitch that Melton has was working, and Dingler enjoyed catching a game like that.
'He has a ton of different shapes that are really, really good,' he said. 'It was fully on display today. He did a great job of commanding his heater, cutter backdoor, slider down. It was a lot of fun.'
Tigers manager AJ Hinch, like the entire team, was also impressed. He noticed that Melton seemed a lot more calm during this outing compared to his first one against the Pirates.
'I think early in his outing in Pittsburgh, he was jumping off the rubber a little bit, he was doing a little bit too much,' Hinch said. 'But generally speaking, because he has a calm heartbeat, he can execute a game plan. And with all of the different options that he and Ding (Dillon Dingler) had to go to against this lineup, he can generate a lot of quick outs and also escape some issues because of the power in his stuff.'
If the Tigers can get some consistency from Troy Melton, that would be huge given some issues and injuries to the rotation. Detroit has been one of the best teams in baseball all year, but their recent skid is definitely concerning. A lot of the losses were because of pitching woes.
Detroit and Arizona will be back in action on Tuesday night. The two teams will get underway at 6:40 ET from Comerica Park. Casey Mize will be on the rubber for the Tigers, and Brandon Pfaadt will get the start for the Diamondbacks. The series finale will go down on Wednesday afternoon.

Two-time Olympic 100m medalist Fred Kerley plans to contest a provisional suspension for whereabouts failures, or missing drug tests. The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), which handles anti-doping for track and field, announced Tuesday that it provisionally suspended Kerley. Athletes can be provisionally suspended before a hearing to determine the final decision in their case. A suspension for whereabouts failures, a term that includes missed drug tests, typically ranges from one to two years depending on degree of fault. Suspensions can be backdated to the date of the last missed test. Olympic-level athletes are required to provide and be present at daily locations for drug testers to find them for no-notice testing. A press release from lawyer Howard Jacobs' office was posted on Kerley's social media less than a half-hour after the provisional ban was announced. "Kerley has already notified the AIU that he intends to contest the allegation that he has violated the anti-doping rules related to whereabouts failures, as he strongly believes that one of (sic) more of his alleged missed tests should be set aside either because he was not negligent or because the Doping Control Officer did not do what was reasonable under the circumstances to locate him at his designated location," it read. "Fred will not comment further at this time out of respect for the process, and he looks forward to presenting his case to the appointed hearing panel." Kerley missed the Toyota USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships earlier this month, saying at the time that '2025 has presented many hurdles. Taking some time out to get back on track." Missing nationals meant that Kerley could not attempt to qualify for September's World Championships. Kerley, 30, won Olympic 100m silver in Tokyo and bronze in Paris. In between, he won the world 100m title in 2022, running 9.77 and 9.76 seconds in the semifinals and final. It took three years until another sprinter ran faster -- Jamaican Kishane Thompson's 9.75 in June, the world's best time in a decade.

NFL appeals Nevada Supreme Court ruling allowing Jon Gruden's lawsuit to proceed
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The NFL will appeal the Nevada Supreme Court's ruling Monday that former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden can proceed with his lawsuit and not go through the league for arbitration. The league will request a rehearing from the same court that overturned a prior Nevada Supreme Court panel ruling in May 2024 that the matter could go to arbitration. But in October, Gruden was granted a hearing by the full court. Gruden filed a lawsuit in 2021 against the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell, alleging that a 'malicious and orchestrated campaign' to destroy his career by leaking old emails he sent that included racist, misogynistic and homophobic comments that pressured the Raiders to fire him. Gruden resigned from the Raiders in October 2021 and sued the league a month later. In 2022, the NFL appealed to Nevada's high court after a judge in Las Vegas rejected league bids to dismiss Gruden's claim outright or to order out-of-court talks through an arbitration process that could be overseen by Goodell. The Nevada Supreme Court, in a 5-2 ruling, said that 'the arbitration clause in the NFL Constitution is unconscionable and does not apply to Gruden as a former employee.' Gruden was an on-air analyst at ESPN from 2011-18 when the emails were sent. He was the Raiders' coach when the team moved in 2020 to Las Vegas from Oakland, California. He's seeking monetary damages, saying that selective disclosure of the emails and their publication by the Wall Street Journal and New York Times ruined his career and endorsement contracts. Gruden coached the Raiders in Oakland from 1998 to 2001, then led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for seven years, winning a Super Bowl title in 2003. He spent several years as a TV analyst for ESPN before being hired by the Raiders again in 2018. He later consulted for the New Orleans Saints in 2023.
