Indianapolis Colts announce series of roster moves after first preseason game
The Indianapolis Colts made a handful of roster moves on Friday, following the team's preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens.
The Colts announced that they placed running back Salvon Ahmed and cornerback Justin Walley on injured reserve.
Ahmed suffered an ankle injury in practice recently on a hip drop tackle by safety Trey Washington. Walley sustained an ACL injury in the Colts' joint practice with Baltimore.
The Colts also announced that they signed offensive tackle Marcellus Johnson, cornerback BJ Mayes, along with running backs Nate Noel and Nay'Quan Wright.
Johnson went undrafted in 2024 out of Missouri. He doesn't have any regular-season NFL snaps and spent time on the Giants and Vikings' practice squads.
Mayes went undrafted this past April out of Texas A&M and spent time this offseason with Philadelphia. Along with not having Walley, Jaylon Jones and JuJu Brents have been sidelined with hamstring injuries.
Noel played his final college season at Missouri and caught on with the Dolphins after this year's NFL draft. Wright went undrafted this year as well, playing his final two seasons at South Florida. He averaged 4.6 yards per rush in his final season.
To make room on the roster, the Colts released Tre Herndon, who was signed recently.

Former Wisconsin Badger suffers season-ending injury in NFL joint practice
Sean Payton confirmed Matt Henningsen tore his Achilles on Thursday. Will have surgery when they get back to Denver and his season is over. Former Wisconsin and current Denver Broncos defensive lineman Matt Henningsen tore his Achilles during training camp practice last week, ending his 2025 season. According to 9NEWS' Mike Klis, the injury occurred during a one-on-one drill during the Broncos' joint practice against the San Francisco 49ers. Head coach Sean Payton announced that Henningsen will have surgery on the tendon when the team returns to Denver, after its Saturday preseason matchup against the 49ers. Henningsen is entering his fourth NFL season, all with the Broncos. The team originally selected him in the sixth round (No. 206 overall) in the 2022 NFL draft. The former Badger played in all 17 games in both 2022 and 2023, totaling a combined 40 tackles, two for loss and two quarterback hits. He then spent the 2024 season on the team's practice squad. The defensive lineman excelled in four years as a primary contributor on Wisconsin's defensive line. Removing a 2020 season cut short due to injury, Henningsen suited up for 40 total games from 2018-21 and totaled 89 tackles, 14 for loss, eight sacks, four pass deflections, three fumble recoveries and two defensive touchdowns. He was a key member of a 2021 Wisconsin defense that is considered the best in program history. Henningsen's focus will now have to turn to 2026 as he looks to continue his NFL career. Thornton was taken in the fourth round of April's draft, two rounds after Las Vegas took fellow wide receiver and TCU product, Jack Bech. Thornton began his college career at Oregon but transferred to Tennessee in 2023. In his four years in college (two at Oregon, two at Tennessee), Thornton caught 65 passes for 1,426 yards and 10 touchdowns. Thornton finished his college career with 26 catches for 661 yards and six touchdowns. How has Dont'e Thornton looked this offseason? While Thornton was expected to be a project at the next level, he has actually proven to be ahead of schedule. "Thornton was still thought to need plenty of polish to become a productive pro receiver," Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal said of Thornton during OTAs.
