Tennis: Top seed Sinner eases into Wimbledon second round - Omni sports

Top seed Jannik Sinner eased into the Wimbledon second round on Tuesday, brushing aside fellow Italian Luca Nardi in straight sets.
Unfazed by the searing heat, Sinner barely broke sweat in a 6-4, 6-3, 6-0 victory lasting just one hour and 48 minutes on Court One.
"I'm very happy to come back here to such a special place for me," Sinner said.
"Playing an Italian is very unfortunate but one has to go through and luckily it was me."
Sinner last week insisted his surprise decision to part with two of his coaching staff on the eve of Wimbledon would not affect his bid to win the tournament for the first time.
He opted to move on from Marco Panichi and Ulises Badio, his trainer and physiotherapist, as he looks for a new direction following his painful French Open final loss to Carlos Alcaraz.
The pair had been employed by Sinner since September 2024, helping him retain the Australian Open crown in January and reach the Roland Garros showpiece in June.
Asked if the decision might jeopardise his Wimbledon challenge over the next fortnight, Sinner was adamant it would be beneficial, with coaches Simone Vagnozzi and Darren Cahill still on his staff.
On the evidence of his dominant display against Nardi the world number one, who returned from a three-month doping ban in May, will be just fine regardless of the coaching shake-up.
"We worked a lot after Halle (grass-court tournament) on the serve and in important moments I felt I was serving very well," Sinner said.
"First matches are never easy, so I'm very happy with the performance. It's a new tournament, new challenges.
"If you don't enjoy to play on these courts, I don't know where you will enjoy. I will try to keep going."
Sinner has won three of the past six Grand Slams, but the 23-year-old blew a two-set lead and wasted three match points as Alcaraz staged a comeback for the ages to win the French Open final.
Sinner has failed to reach the Wimbledon final in his four visits, with a last-four appearance in 2023 ranking as his best effort.
The Italian's Wimbledon preparations were also dented by a shock last-16 defeat against Alexander Bublik at Halle.
Playing world number 95 Nardi for the first time, Sinner had little trouble dispatching the 21-year-old in his first Grand Slam match since that bitter defeat at Roland Garros.
Sinner recently released a duet titled Polvere e Gloria, which means Dust and Glory, with renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli.
The Italian will hope he continues hitting all the right notes in his Wimbledon title bid.

NBA: Knicks offer coaching job to Mike Brown: Reports - Omni sports

The New York Knicks have offered their coaching job to Mike Brown and are working to finalize a deal with the two-time NBA Coach of the Year, a person with knowledge of the details said Wednesday. Brown would replace Tom Thibodeau, who was fired last month despite leading the Knicks to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 25 years. Brown had his second interview with the Knicks on Tuesday before the job was offered, the person told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because details of the search were to remain private. The plan to hire Brown was first reported by ESPN. Brown earned his second award as the NBA's top coach after leading Sacramento to the playoffs in 2022-23 — ending what was the league's longest postseason drought with its first appearance since 2006 — but the Kings fired him nearly halfway through last season. He would take over a Knicks team that believes it can contend for the NBA title and made it clear that was the only goal when it made the surprising decision to fire Thibodeau, who like Brown is a two-time winner of the NBA's Coach of the Year award. The Knicks quickly identified Brown as a candidate they wanted to speak with, while also discussing the job with former Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins and current assistants James Borrego of New Orleans and Micah Nori of Minnesota before offering the position to Brown. Brown was honored with his first coaching award when he coached the Cleveland Cavaliers, the team he led to the NBA Finals in 2007 during his first stint with the organization. He also coached the Los Angeles Lakers and is 454-304 in his career. Brown also won four championships as an assistant coach, three with the Golden State Warriors and one under Gregg Popovich in San Antonio. His coaching staff will be discussed in the coming days, the person told AP. Thibodeau led the Knicks to their only sustained success of the 2000s, with four playoff appearances in his five seasons. They reached at least the East semifinals each of the last three seasons and reached 50 wins in both of the last two. Tennis: Sabalenka praying for no more Wimbledon upsets after battling win - Omni sports

World number one Aryna Sabalenka said she hopes there are "no more upsets" at Wimbledon after reaching the third round with a hard-fought 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 win over Marie Bouzkova on Wednesday. Several stars suffered shock first round exits from the All England Club, including second seed Coco Gauff, third seed Jessica Pegula and fifth seed Zheng Qinwen. Top seed Sabalenka was pushed hard by Bouzkova in Wednesday's opening match on Centre Court as her Czech opponent matched fire with fire in a bruising encounter. But she eventually had too much in her locker for her 48th-ranked opponent, firing an impressive 41 winners in a match lasting one hour and 35 minutes. The Belarusian said after her win she was aware of the seeds who had crashed out but planned to focus on her own game. "Honestly it's very sad to see so many top players losing in the first round but you better focus on yourself and stay away from the results," she said. "I mean of course you're going to know the overall picture but it's better to take it one step at a time and do your best every time you're out here competing and I'm trying to stay away. "I hope it's no upsets anymore in this tournament, if you know what I mean!" The first set went with serve until Sabalenka doubled-faulted in the 11th game to hand Bouzkova the chance to serve for the set. But the Belarusian broke back with a searing backhand down the line and came out on top in the tie-break to establish a foothold in the match. Sabalenka broke again in the fifth game of the second set to move within sight of victory and closed out the match with little fuss. She will face 2021 US Open winner Emma Raducanu or former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in the third round on Friday. Although Sabalenka is a three-time Grand Slam champion, she has suffered agonising three-set defeats in this year's Australian Open and French Open finals. The 27-year-old has never been beyond the Wimbledon semi-finals and missed last year's tournament with a shoulder injury. Masry sign Ahly midfielder El-Saaiy on loan - Egyptian Football

Egyptian Premier League side Masry have signed Ahly midfielder Omar El-Saaiy on a one-season loan, the Port Said-based club announced on Wednesday. Related Masry appoint Tunisian coach Kouki as new manager El-Saaiy, a former Ismaily player, signed a five-year deal with Ahly in the summer of 2024 in a transfer worth $1 million, but fell out of favour under former coach Marcel Koller. The 22-year-old made just 10 appearances last season, totaling 290 minutes, and was left out of Ahly's squad for the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup. Masry appointed Tunisian Nabil Kouki as their new head coach last month. (For more sports news and updates, follow Ahram Online Sports on Twitter at @AO_Sports and on Facebook at AhramOnlineSports.)
