A day after being sentenced to life imprisonment in a rape case, suspended JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna was assigned a prisoner number at Bengaluru's Parappana Agrahara Central prison, jail authorities said on Sunday. Protest were held calling for Revanna's arrest when he was on the run.(PTI File)
Revanna, the grandson of former prime minister and JDS supremo HD Deve Gowda, spent his first night in jail following Saturday's court verdict that found him guilty.
He was reportedly in tears and appeared visibly distressed. Prison doctors assessed his health late on Saturday night to ensure his medical condition was stable.
'He broke down during the medical check-up and expressed his anguish to the staff,' a senior official said.
Prajwal has reportedly informed the staff that he has approached the high court challenging the conviction.
The former MP is currently lodged in a high-security cell and is being provided enhanced security.
According to prison officials, the standard dress code for convicts is being followed, and he will be required to wear the uniform given to prisoners.
Prisoner number 15528 was officially allotted to him on Sunday morning, they added.
Prajwal was on Saturday sentenced to prison term for the remainder of his life, while the court slapped an overall fine of ₹11.5 lakh on him, directing that ₹11.25 lakh be paid to the victim, a domestic help of the family of the accused.
The court thus convicted Prajwal Revanna (34) in one of the four sexual abuse and rape cases against him. The Special Court for MPs/MLAs Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat pronounced the verdict on Saturday, after convicting Prajwal a day earlier.
The case pertains to a 48-year-old woman who was working as a domestic help at the family's Gannikada farmhouse in Hassan district's Holenarasipura.
She was allegedly raped twice — at Hassan farm house and Bengaluru residence — in 2021 and the act recorded by the accused on his mobile phone.
Prajwal was booked under sections 376(2)(k) (being in a position of control or dominance over a woman, commits rape on such woman), 376 (2)(n) (repeated rape on the same woman), 354A (sexual harassment), 354B (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe), 354C (voyeurism), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 201 (disappearance of evidence) of the IPC, and Section 66E (violation of privacy) of the IT Act, by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) which probed the case.
The court sentenced Prajwal Revanna to imprisonment for life and imposed ₹5 lakh as fine, under section 376(2)(k), and imprisonment for life which shall mean remainder of natural life along with ₹5 lakh fine under section 376(2)(n).
He has been also sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for three years and ₹25,000 fine under section 354A, rigorous imprisonment for 7 years and ₹50,000 fine under section 354B, rigorous imprisonment for 3 years and ₹25,000 fine under section 354C.
A two year RI has also been given to Prajwal, with a fine of ₹10,000 under section 506, imprisonment of 3 yrs and fine of ₹25,000 under section 201, and imprisonment of 3 yrs and fine of ₹25,000 under section 66 E of IT Act.

Fake Residential Certificate Application In Trump's Name Surfaces In Bihar

Patna: In a bizarre twist to the growing trend of fake residence certificate cases in Bihar, an application has surfaced in Samastipur district seeking a certificate in the name of US President Donald Trump. The incident took place in the Mohiuddinnagar zone, where an unidentified person submitted an online application using Trump's photo and name, falsely listing the address as Village Hasanpur, Ward No. 13, Post Bakarpur, Police Station Mohiuddinnagar, District Samastipur. The application, submitted on July 29, 2025, was recorded under Application No. BRCCO/2025/17989735. Upon verification, officials found clear tampering in the form's photo, Aadhaar number, barcode, and address details, prompting the Circle Officer (CO) to reject the application outright. Officials believe the act was deliberately carried out to ridicule and defame the administrative system. Mohiuddinnagar CO confirmed that this is a serious violation under the IT Act, and a complaint has been filed with the local cyber police station. "Strict legal action will be taken against those responsible," said the CO, adding that cybercrime investigators are now tracking the IP address and login credentials used in the prank. This incident is the latest in a series of fake residence certificate scams surfacing across Bihar in recent weeks. Officials have flagged previous applications under names like 'Dog Babu', 'Nitish Kumari', and even in the name of Sonalika tractor, in Patna, East Champaran, Nalanda and other districts of Bihar, exposing glaring loopholes in the online application verification system. The repeated misuse of the online portal has raised serious concerns over digital document integrity and identity fraud. Administrative officers are now considering technical audits and stricter KYC verification mechanisms to prevent further embarrassment. As the state heads into election season, such incidents not only undermine the government's digital governance claims but also highlight the urgent need for cyber vigilance and stronger administrative filters. Sunjay Kapur's Death Being Treated As "Non-Suspicious": UK Police

London: The British police on Tuesday said that the death of industrialist Sunjay Kapur at a polo club in Surrey is being treated as "non-suspicious". The statement from Surrey Police came in response to a PTI query around Kapur's mother, Rani Kapur, approaching UK authorities for an investigation into her son's death under "highly suspicious and unexplained circumstances". Kapur, 53, former Chairman of auto components major Sona BLW Precision Forgings (Sona Comstar), passed away on June 12 while playing polo at the Guards Polo Club, Windsor Great Park, in the village of Virginia Water in Surrey. "Police were called to the Guards Polo Club in Virginia Water just after 5 pm on Thursday, 12 June, following the death of a man in his 50s at the location," Surrey Police said in the statement. "Colleagues from South East Coast Ambulance also attended and confirmed that the man had sadly died at the scene. His death is being treated as non-suspicious. As we are not treating this as a criminal offence, any further queries should go via the Coroner's Office," the statement said. The Surrey Coroner's Office has been approached for details, even as a coroner's report from the office of Kapur's wife - Priya Sachdev Kapur - has been referenced across Indian media reports, giving the industrialist's cause of death as the result of "left ventricular hypertrophy and ischemic heart disease". Both relate to breathing difficulties resulting in a heart attack. "She (Rani Kapur) has been seeking details, asking for the post-mortem report... suddenly today, from the media, she gets to know that there is a post-mortem report, which dates back to July 6 if I'm not mistaken. But till date, she has not been provided with a copy from any source," said Senior Advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, who is representing Kapur's mother. Asked if his client's concerns remain even after the report being referenced in the media, Gaggar said: "Absolutely, in fact it only reaffirms her suspicions quite tremendously. There are lots of gaps if it is looked into deeply. Just as an example, throughout, we were given to understand that this is a bee sting that did this. There is no mention of any bee or a sting, anything whatsoever in this report. "And, her statement was quite clear that this is being made out to be a freak accident or a very natural death but this needs to be looked into in the conspectus of facts which transpired around the death - before, during and after. Obviously, all those suspicions remain very much there and this report has only aggravated those suspicions." Gaggar asserted that as an elderly grieving mother, Rani Kapur's focus is neither money nor power but a "deeper, proper, neutral, independent investigation" into the death of her son "in the pink of his health otherwise". "It just does not add up for her and that, as of now, is going to remain her fight," said the advocate, who also pointed to the "injustice" of her not having any access to any funds. Kapur was the owner of the Aureus polo team and well known on the circuit, reportedly also playing polo with William, the Prince of Wales and heir to the British throne. At the time of his sudden death, the club said Kapur passed away after "becoming unwell" while playing in a match at its Smith's Lawn. Some reports had referred to a bee sting that may have triggered an anaphylactic shock causing a heart attack. Following his demise, Sona Comstar's board appointed Jeffery Mark Overly as the chairman on June 23. In a letter dated July 24 to the board, Rani Kapur alleged that while the family mourned the death of Sunjay Kapur last month, some people chose to wrest control and usurp the family legacy. Rani Kapur had also sought postponement of the company's AGM, which included a resolution to appoint Priya Sachdev Kapur as a non-executive director. The company's shareholders on July 25, however, approved that appointment with a requisite majority. Previously, Rani Kapur has referenced a will dated June 30, 2015, to claim she is the sole beneficiary of her late husband Surinder Kapur's estate and accordingly a majority shareholder of the Sona Group, including the auto components firm. However, in a regulatory filing, Sona Comstar claimed that, as per the company records, she has not been a shareholder of the company at least since 2019.

Pakistan political standoff deepens as PTI marks Imran's two years in jail

ISLAMABAD: Two years after former prime minister Imran Khan was jailed, Pakistan is caught in a dangerous political deadlock. Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) marked the anniversary with nationwide protests on Tuesday, confronting an increasingly dominant military establishment led by Field Marshal Asim Munir. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Demonstrators took to the streets in Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, and other cities, demanding Khan's release from Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail, where he has been held since Aug 2023 on charges ranging from corruption to incitement. PTI called the protests a 'do-or-die' moment for democracy. In response, police in Punjab and other regions launched a crackdown, detaining dozens of workers and raiding party politicians' homes, a move Punjab police denied, though sources confirmed at least 20 arrests in Lahore. The crackdown follows sweeping convictions last week, when an anti-terrorism court in Faisalabad sentenced 108 PTI members, including opposition politicians Omar Ayub, Shibli Faraz, and Zartaj Gul Wazir, to 10 years in jail over the May 9, 2023 riots in which military installations were attacked following Khan's brief arrest. Additional convictions were also handed down by another Punjab court, signalling what critics say is a coordinated effort to decapitate the party. PTI chairman Gohar Ali Khan denounced the rulings as 'engineered', timed to sabotage the protests. 'These are not trials, they're political purges,' he said. Khan, speaking through his X account, has accused the military of rigging the 2024 elections and enforcing what he called 'Asim Law' — de facto military rule propped up by Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The bitter personal feud between Khan and Munir dates back to 2019, when Khan, then PM, removed Munir as ISI chief, a humiliation the now army chief has apparently not forgotten. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Since Munir's appointment in 2022, the military has tightened its grip on civilian institutions. In June, Munir was controversially promoted to field marshal, Pakistan's first since Ayub Khan, drawing criticism as a face-saving move after recent strategic and political setbacks. The military's power has been further entrenched by a May 2025 Supreme Court ruling allowing civilian trials in military courts, and the passage of the 26th Amendment, which PTI says undermines judicial independence. The PTI's cause has found support overseas, where diaspora communities have launched sustained protest campaigns in cities like London, Toronto, and Houston. Demonstrators have condemned what they call 'military rule in civilian clothing', using social media and digital billboards to amplify their message. While their efforts have gained some attention from rights groups and sympathetic lawmakers, they have yet to translate into meaningful international pressure on Islamabad. Back home, the govt defends the crackdown as a lawful response to what it sees as attempts to destabilise the state. But human rights groups, including Amnesty International, accuse authorities of using 'unlawful and excessive force', including arbitrary arrests, internet shutdowns, and blanket bans on public gatherings. Pakistan's escalating political crisis is no longer just about Imran Khan. It is a contest for power, legitimacy, and the future of democratic space in the country.
