Would you pay R246 million for this Marlene Dumas painting
The artwork, a last-minute consignment from the Rubell Family Collection, had been estimated between $12 million and $18 million, with a third-party guarantee in place. Marlene Dumas's Miss January (1997) sold for $13.6 million, including fees. Image: Christie's
Bidding opened at $9 million and quickly escalated, with the hammer coming down at $11.5 million (before fees), prompting applause in the saleroom.
With fees, the final price reached $13.6 million.
The winning bid came from an anonymous telephone buyer.
The painting is a towering oil-on-canvas piece measuring approximately 9 feet tall (281.9cm x 101.6cm) and revisits themes deeply personal to Marlene Dumas, who has lived in the Netherlands since the late 1970s.
It draws inspiration from Miss World , the first known drawing she created at age 10, and connects to her earlier works such as the 1988 Misinterpreted – widely seen as a self-portrait – and her 1992 survey exhibition Miss Interpreted at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
This sale surpasses the previous record for a living female artist, held by Jenny Saville, whose Propped (1992) fetched £9.5 million ($12.4 million) at Sotheby's London in 2018.
Before this auction, Dumas's highest price was $6.33 million, achieved in 2008 for The Visitor (1995) at Sotheby's London.
While her market has remained steady, only a handful of her works have crossed the $1 million mark in recent years.
Between 2022 and 2024, 15 Dumas works were sold at auction, but only five exceeded $1 million, and just two surpassed their high estimates.
The sale was also notable due to the rarity of deaccessions from the Rubell Family Collection, one of the most prominent in the world.
According to past statements, the Rubells have sold fewer than 20 pieces out of more than 5 000 collected over five decades.
Miss January was previously displayed at their private museum in Miami during Art Basel in December.
Dumas's historic result reaffirms her global significance and places her firmly at the top of the contemporary art market.

Keanu Cupido's Mamelodi Sundowns journey: From holiday dreams to automatic starter
Mamelodi Sundowns' Keanu Cupido impressed with his performances at the Fifa Club World Cup. Image: Backpagepix Keanu Cupido thought he'd be flying out to the United States for an all-expenses paid holiday when he made Mamelodi Sundowns' final squad for the Fifa Club World Cup. But rather than finding himself soaking up the sunshine of Florida, Cupido became an integral part of coach Miguel Cardoso's plans. The Portugal-born coach surprisingly drafted Cupido into the starting lineup from the onset, and ended up starting the next two group matches too. Cupido, speaking on the sidelines of the MTN8 launch this week ahead of their quarter-final tie at home to Richards Bay Sunday, admitted he was shocked after getting the nod to start. 'It's not about (walking) straight into the team. It's been about working behind the scenes. So, it's just hard work that paid off,' the central defender explained. 'It did surprise me (to get the nod), because I hadn't played for a while. So, I thought going to a major tournament like this would be a holiday for me, but God works in mysterious ways.' Cupido 🗣 "We want to start the season very well, this is a game where we want to show up. We want to win this trophy." Our season kicks off this Sunday and we are ready to go! 👆 Get your tickets! 🎟 #MTN8 #AreyengMasandawana — Mamelodi Sundowns FC (@Masandawana) July 31, 2025 Video Player is loading. The 27-year-old, though, insisted that he was welcomed with open arms in the starting lineup as those who played alongside him gave him words of advice. 'The players at Mamelodi Sundowns make it very easy for one of us to perform on the day,' Cupido explained. 'If you go to a big game, the players will tell you: just do the basics, and simple things, then your confidence will grow. And that's what I did. 'So that helped me a lot to settle into the first game, and from then on it was a smooth ride for me.' Cupido didn't only settle at Sundowns with the help of his teammates and technical team. It also took someone close to his heart to keep him going after a tough start at the club. 'In all honesty, it was tough for me at first, but my wife made it easy for me,' said Cupido, who had only made two appearances for the team prior to the Club World Cup. 'She said 'everything works through God, if it's his timing, then it will happen'. That kept me going. 'So, I feel she played a major part in this. She kept me motivated, head down and working hard. I think that support structure is very important.' 🏆 𝗙𝗢𝗢𝗧𝗕𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗥 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗢𝗡 🏆 In a league of his own! 🔥 Lucas Ribeiro your 24/25 PSL Footballer Of The Season! 👆 We are proud of you Lucas! 👏#Sundowns #PSLAwards25 — Mamelodi Sundowns FC (@Masandawana) July 29, 2025 Cupido also credited his former Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler for pushing him after a promising start to his career. 'You need someone to trust you,' Cupido acknowledged. 'At the end of Eric's last two seasons in his last spell, he felt like he trusted me more and more. 'So, I also felt like I needed to give him back. So, since he made me the vice-captain, that gave responsibility for me as a player. 'I think it made me grow as a player as well. If you are comfortable in one spot, then you don't grow. He needed to put more responsibility on me.' There'll be more responsibilities and expectations that will be placed on Cupido and Co ahead of the new season after winning the hearts of many in the US. Cupido, though, is not fazed by that, saying the players know that their job at Sundowns comes with expectation, including giving their best season in and season out. 'We feel like we need to take care of our bodies as players firstly, and then the team will come into it when we need to do our recoveries,' Cupido said. 'We also need to look at what we eat because nutrition is very important. So that's the thing that separates professionals from the rest. 'You could see that Tebza [Teboho Mokoena] and [Lucas] Ribeiro played so many games last season, so they are used to the workload.'

Comedian Justice Kubheka confirms he and his wife to split after 10 years of marriage
Comedian Justice Kubheka has confirmed that his decade-long marriage to wife Zama Kubheka has ended. A source close to the Pietermaritzburg-born entertainer told TshisaLIVE that Justice shared the news with close friends, expressing deep sadness over the separation. What makes the break-up even more painful, according to insiders, is that the comedian underwent a vasectomy during the marriage, believing he and Zama were in it for life. 'We asked him why he didn't come to us first before he went for a vasectomy,' a source said. 'We can't predict the future, anything can happen. Now he's going through the most and it's sad.' Another close friend alleged that tensions in the marriage had been brewing for some time. 'He told us that 'Umfazi akasamfuni ngoba uyabheda' — meaning the wife no longer wants to be with him because he's a mess,' said the source. Justice, who has kept a relatively low profile about his personal life until now, took to social media to break his silence and set the record straight.

'Married by best friend': Inside Springbok Vincent Tshituka's wedding
Springbok Vincent Tshituka and his new wife Katlego Monare are sharing a look inside their wedding day, which took place over the weekend. The DRC-born rugby star and his influencer bride have been dating since 2022, when he 'slid into her DMs'. Earlier this month, Vincent made his green and gold debut against Italy at Loftus. On their joint TikTok account, Vincent Tshituka and Katlego Monare – a North-West University graduate – have been sharing content about their wedding day. In one clip, the couple introduce themselves as Mr and Mrs Tshituka at their reception. Another shows Katlego putting the finishing touches on her strapless white wedding dress. 'I'll come back to this in a couple of years to see', she jokingly responded. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 .
