Ghana's Partey granted bail on rape charges - Africa

Al-Ahram Weekly2 days ago
Former Arsenal footballer Thomas Partey was granted conditional bail on Tuesday after appearing in a London court on rape and sexual assault charges.
The 32-year-old Ghana international has been charged with five counts of rape against two women, as well as a charge of sexual assault against a third woman.
The alleged offences took place between 2021 and 2022, when he was an Arsenal player.
Partey was charged four days after leaving the Gunners when his contract expired at the end of June.
The midfielder stood with his arms behind his back in the dock at Westminster Magistrates' Court, wearing a black zip-neck jumper.
British police said they first received reports of an allegation of rape in February 2022.
Partey's lawyer Jenny Wiltshire previously said he "denies all the charges against him", adding he welcomed "the opportunity to finally clear his name".
Partey joined Arsenal for £45 million ($60 million) from Atletico Madrid in October 2020.
He appeared 52 times for the Gunners last season, scoring four goals. Overall he played 167 games for the club, scoring nine times.
Partey has also made 51 appearances for Ghana.
An Arsenal spokesman previously said: "The player's contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings the club is unable to comment on the case."
Reports in recent days have linked Partey with a move to Spanish club Villarreal.

Zamalek sign Brazilian winger Juan Alvina from Ukraine's FC Oleksandriya - Egyptian Football

Egyptian giants Zamalek have signed Brazilian winger Juan Alvina from Ukrainian club FC Oleksandriya, hours before the close of the summer transfer window on Wednesday midnight. The 22-year-old, who primarily operates as a right winger, has penned a four-year contract keeping him at Zamalek until the summer of 2029. Alvina spent the 2024/25 season at Oleksandriya, where he scored six goals and provided five assists in 24 league appearances. His contributions helped the Ukrainian side finish second in the league, three points behind champions Dynamo Kyiv. ساحر من شواطئ ريو لـ مدرجات التالتة يمين 🏖🤩 البرازيلي خوان ألفينا أحدث المنضمين لمدرسة الفن والهندسة 🌟 إحنا الملوك.. إحنا الزمالك 🏹 ⁦ #Zamalek⁩| ⁦ #MostTitledIn20C⁩| ⁧#الزمالك_أولًا⁩ | ⁧ #أكبر_قلعة_رياضية — Zamalek SC (@ZSCOfficial) August 6, 2025 Zamalek made room for the signing of Alvina after agreeing to loan Tunisian winger Ahmed Jafeli to Saudi side Abha Club. The Brazilian completes the club's five-man foreign player quota, joining Moroccan duo Sallah Moussaddaq and Mahmoud Bentayg, Tunisian striker Seifeddine Jaziri and Angolan winger Chico Banza. He becomes Zamalek's tenth signing this summer, following arrivals including Palestinian striker Oday Dabbagh, Swedish-Palestinian winger Adam Kaied, Angolan forward Chico Banza, Morocco U-20 winger Abdelhamid Maali, goalkeeper El-Mahdi Soliman, midfielder Ahmed Rabi from NBE Club, defender Mohamed Ismael from ZED FC, and Pharco FC attacking duo Amr Nasser and Ahmed Sherif. Zamalek are rebuilding their squad after a disappointing 2024/25 campaign that saw them finish third in the Egyptian Premier League and exit in the quarter-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup. The White Knights will kick off their new league season on 8 August with a tough away fixture against Ceramica Cleopatra at Suez Stadium. UK pensioner, student arrested for backing Palestine Action - War on Gaza

Pensioner Marji Mansfield never imagined she would end up suspected of terrorism for protesting against the banning of a pro-Palestinian group. But the British grandmother was arrested on July 5 for joining a demonstration in support of Palestine Action just days after it was added to the UK government's list of proscribed organisations. "It's a terrible shock to be accused of potentially being a terrorist," said Mansfield, 68, who described herself as a "proud grandmother" of seven. She "was never politically interested," the former banking consultant from the southern town of Chichester told AFP. "I just worked hard, raised my family, lived an ordinary life." In early July, the UK government banned Palestine Action under the UK's Terrorism Act, after activists broke into an air force base in England and damaged two aircraft. Since then, the campaign group Defend Our Juries has organised protests around the country to challenge the ban, described as "disproportionate" by the United Nations rights chief. More than 200 people have been arrested, according to Tim Crosland, a member of Defend Our Juries. They risk prison sentences of up to 14 years. A new demonstration in support of the group, which was founded in 2020, is planned on Saturday in London. Organisers expect at least 500 people to turn up, and police have warned all demonstrators could face arrest. People "don't know what the nature of this group is," interior minister Yvette Cooper has said, claiming that "this is not a non-violent group". But Palestine Action co-founder Huda Ammori has launched a court bid to overturn the ban and a hearing is set for November. Some 52 scholars, including well-known authors Tariq Ali and Naomi Klein, backed the bid in an open letter published in Thursday's Guardian, calling the ban an attack on "fundamental freedoms of expression, association, assembly and protest." 'Not terrorists' Mansfield has long supported the Palestinian people, but the start of the current Israeli on Gaza galvanised her into action. "When it started happening again ... it was the most horrible feeling, that children's homes were being blown up, that their schools were being destroyed," she said. Israel's war on Gaza has killed more than 60,000 people, mostly women and children. For Mansfield, the Palestine Action ban was the final straw, fuelling her feelings that the government was silencing her political views. The night before attending the July demonstration, Mansfield said she was "terrified". But she did not change her mind. Images on British media showed her being moved by several police officers after she refused to get up from the pavement. An 83-year-old woman was by her side. Mansfield spent 12 hours in custody, and is now banned from parts of London, meaning she cannot visit some museums with her grandchildren as she would like to do. "It was just ordinary people," said Mansfield. "We came from all backgrounds ... we're not terrorists." 'Civil liberties' Alice Clark, a 49-year-old doctor, also does not regret attending the protest where she was arrested in London on July 19. "Nobody wants to be arrested. I just feel that there's a responsibility," said Clark, who also accused the government of undermining "our civil liberties". Cooper said the ban on Palestine Action was "based on detailed security assessments and security advice". The ban says the group's "methods have become more aggressive" by encouraging members to carry out attacks which have already caused millions of pounds in damage. But Clark, a former volunteer for medical charity Doctors Without Borders, said she felt "growing disgust and horror" at the images of starving children in Gaza. The 12 hours in custody after her arrest were a shock. If convicted, she risks losing her licence to practice medicine. "There were points where I was close to tears. But I think just remembering why I was doing it kind of helped me keep calm," said Clark. History student Zahra Ali, 18, was also arrested on July 19, before being released under supervision. None of the three women has been charged. She is also appalled by the scenes from Gaza. "The starvation in Gaza, it's disgusting. And our government isn't doing anything about that," she told AFP. Imagining herself in prison at 18 is "a big thing," but "if people who are in their 80s can do it, then I can do it," Ali said. She also does not describe herself as an activist, but as "a normal person ... who decided that what our government is doing is wrong". Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

German great Mueller signs with MLS Whitecaps - World

Bayern Munich and Germany forward Thomas Mueller has signed with Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps, the Canadian club announced on Wednesday. The 35-year-old has signed through the end of the 2025 MLS season with an option for 2026, Vancouver said. Mueller announced earlier this year that he would be departing from Bayern Munich - his home for 25 years. His tenure included 13 Bundesliga titles and two Champions League triumphs. "I'm looking forward to coming to Vancouver to help this team win a championship," Mueller said in a statement. "I've heard great things about the city, but first and foremost I'm coming to win. "I've had great conversations with Axel Schuster and Jesper Sorensen, and now I can't wait to play in front of the supporters and to see all of the fans come out to BC Place as we head towards the playoffs." Mueller arrives at a Whitecaps team currently second in the Western Conference, one point behind leaders San Diego but with one match in hand. "He not only brings a winning pedigree and exceptional football intelligence, but also a tireless work ethic that will elevate the entire team," Whitecaps chief executive Schuster said in a statement. "Thomas is a natural leader whose passion for the game is infectious. This is a statement signing by our club and our ownership -- a transformative moment for our club and our city. We are proud to welcome Thomas to Vancouver." Restricted mainly to a substitute's role in the 2024-25 campaign, Mueller made 49 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals. He retired from international duty in 2024, having won the World Cup with Germany in 2014. He finished his international career with 131 caps, scoring 45 goals. There had been brief speculation that he would land with Los Angeles FC, but the Whitecaps announcement came on the same day that LAFC were expected to confirm the signing of South Korean star Son Heung-min.
