After playing with the Colorado Buffaloes under his father, coach Deion Sanders, Shedeur Sanders was projected by many to be a top-10 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Instead, the quarterback slid to No. 144, where he was selected by the Cleveland Browns.
In his first NFL training camp, Sanders faced stiff competition from Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. But with Flacco resting and the other two quarterbacks sidelined by injuries, Sanders drew the start in his preseason debut on Friday against the Carolina Panthers.
And Shedeur Sanders played with a major chip on his shoulder.
Shedeur Sanders Throws First TD Pass With Browns
Shedeur Sanders played the entire first half for the Browns and reached a career milestone early in the second quarter. After Cleveland recovered a muffed punt by Panthers rookie Trevor Etienne, Shedeur Sanders and the offense took over at the 10-yard line, in prime position to score.
On 2nd and goal, Shedeur faked a handoff to his running back before rolling to his left. After scanning the field for a few seconds, he slung a ball into heavy traffic, but still hit Kaden Davis for the touchdown.
Following the extra point, the Browns were able to eliminate their deficit, tying Carolina at 7-7.
Deion Sanders Reacts to His Son's First Touchdown
Shortly after Shedeur Sanders found Davis in the end zone, Coach Prime took to social media to share his excitement for his son.
"Yes Lawd! Yes! @ShedeurSanders," Deion Sanders wrote on X.
Shedeur Sanders went on to toss his second touchdown pass of the night late in the second quarter, once again to Davis, to which Deion Sanders posted: "Oh yeah what now! #CoachPrime."
Even before the game began, Coach Prime expressed his eagerness for Shedeur Sanders' debut, claiming he is a "kid in a candy shop."
'We've already spoken like three times today—we just got off the phone joking and clowning,' Deion Sanders said. 'It's gonna be strange… but he's so prepared right now. A lot of people are approaching this like a preseason game—he's treating it like a real game. He's thankful and appreciative of the opportunity... I can't wait to see him play. I'm like a kid in a candy shop. I just can't wait to see him get down tonight… he's gonna be a problem out there, I promise you that.'
Shedeur Sanders is no stranger to tossing touchdown passes. During his two years at Colorado, he threw for 7,364 yards, 64 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He even broke the program record for single-season passing touchdowns with both the Buffaloes (37) and his first school, Jackson State (40).Following the Panthers game, Shedeur Sanders could get his second opportunity as soon as Saturday, August 16, when the Browns face the Philadelphia Eagles. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 9, 2025, where it first appeared.

Cincinnati beats Timbers 3-2 to grab lead in Eastern Conference and Supporters' Shield races

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Kévin Denkey scored early to spark a three-goal first half and FC Cincinnati hung on to beat the Portland Timbers 3-2 on Saturday night to take over first place in the Eastern Conference and Supporters' Shield races. Denkey needed just 10 minutes to score unassisted and give Cincinnati (16-7-4) the lead after the club hadn't scored in its previous two matches. He has 12 goals in his first 23 appearances in the league. Pavel Bucha scored unassisted for his third goal 15 minutes later to put Cincinnati up 2-0. Evander da Silva Ferreira scored against his former teammates in the 36th minute for a three-goal advantage. It was the 15th goal for Evander, matching his career high set last season with the Timbers. He had 24 goals and 19 assists in his two seasons in Portland. The Timbers (10-9-7) cut it to 3-1 by halftime when Kevin Kelsy scored two minutes later against his former team with an assist from Ariel Lassiter — his first of the season. Kelsy pulled Portland within a goal on a penalty kick — his first of the season — in the 68th minute. It was Kelsy's seventh goal — one more than he had for Cincinnati last season as a rookie. The PK was awarded after Juan Mosquera drew a foul on Stiven Jimenez. Roman Celantano totaled three saves for Cincinnati in the club's first trip to Portland. Maxime Crépeau saved two shots for the Timbers. Cincinnati has a league-high nine road wins — one more than expansion side San Diego FC. Cincinnati will host New York City FC on Saturday. The Timbers travel to play San Diego on Saturday. ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press

Martín Ojeda extends goal contribution streak to 12 in Orlando City's 3-1 victory over Sporting KC

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Martín Ojeda made it 12 matches in a row with a goal contribution when he picked up an assist on Ramiro Enrique's go-ahead goal in the second half and Orlando City beat Sporting Kansas City 3-1 on Saturday night. Ojeda earned his 14th assist of the season when Enrique scored for the seventh time, giving Orlando City (13-6-8) a 2-1 lead in the 76th minute. Ojeda tied Sebastian Giovinco's 12-match run for Toronto FC in 2018 for the second longest in league history. Josef Martínez set the record with a 15-match streak while playing for Atlanta United in 2019. Newcomer Tyrese Spicer needed just two minutes to score and give Orlando City the lead after weather delayed the start for 3 hours, 13 minutes. Spicer found the net for the first time in his first start and second appearance with the club after scoring twice in seven starts and 21 appearances for Toronto FC this season. Dejan Joveljic pulled Sporting KC (6-14-6) even in the 25th minute with an assist from Mason Toye — the first of his career. It was the team-high 14th netter for Joveljic in his first season with the club and one off his career high set last season for the defending champion Los Angeles Galaxy. Toye, also in his first season with the team, had not had an assist in 123 league appearances since 2018. Orlando City regained the lead in the 76th minute when Enrique used assists from Ojeda and Iván Angulo to score after subbing in for Luis Muriel in the 71st. It was the seventh assist for Angulo, who subbed in for Marco Pašalić, also in the 71st. Rookie Nicolás Rodríguez replaced Spicer in the 77th and then gave Orlando City a two-goal lead unassisted in the 83rd with his first netter in his eighth appearance. Pedro Gallese turned away three shots for Orlando City. John Pulskamp had four saves for Sporting KC. Orlando City coach Oscar Pareja earned his 100th victory. Orlando City travels to play Nashville SC on Saturday. Sporting KC travels to play the Seattle Sounders on Sunday. ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press

Jarrett Stidham shines again as Broncos dominate Cardinals in 27-7 win

The Denver Broncos dominated the Arizona Cardinals with a 27-7 win in Week 2 of NFL preseason at Empower Field at Mile High on Saturday evening. The Broncos rested most starters, but coach Sean Payton made a few exceptions, including tight end Evan Engram. The veteran helped Denver march 97 yards on the team's opening drive with a 58-yard catch-and-run. After quarterback Jarrett Stidham then connected with rookie receiver Pat Bryant for 29 more yards, rookie running back RJ Harvey punched it in from eight yards out to give the Broncos an early 7-0 lead. Arizona matched that score with an 11-play, 67-yard drive that ended with quarterback Jacoby Brissett's 16-yard touchdown pass to receiver Simi Fehoko to tie the game at 7-7. Stidham later threw a touchdown pass of his own, connecting with receiver Troy Franklin on a 27-yard score to give the Broncos a 14-7 lead. After Denver's second score of the game, the Cardinals replaced Brissett with Clayton Tune at quarterback late in the first quarter. Stidham stayed in the game for the Broncos' third series and the offense drove down to the two-yard line and lined up to go for it on 4th-and-1 before offensive lineman Alex Palczewski was penalized for a false start. After the penalty backed the team up five yards, Denver settled for a 26-yard Wil Lutz field goal to make it 17-7. The highlight of that drive was a 35-yard run from running back Jaleel McLaughlin. Stidham ended up playing the entire first half and he connected with Franklin again late in the second quarter on a 17-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 24-7. After Lutz missed a 64-yard field goal attempt, the Broncos took a 17-point lead into halftime. Stidham finished his night 16-of-23 passing for 240 yards with two touchdowns. Lutz later converted a 35-yard field goal in the third quarter to extend the lead to 27-7. Sam Ehlinger took over at quarterback in the second half and he threw what would have been a touchdown pass to Caden Prieskorn late in the fourth quarter, but the tight end fumbled the ball and the Cardinals recovered it in the end zone for a touchback. It didn't take long for Denver to get the ball back and run out the clock, securing a 27-7 victory. On the injury front, backup offensive lineman Nick Gargiulo was carted off the field in the third quarter and was quickly ruled out with a knee injury. Gargiulo has been competing for a backup swing guard/center role. Outside linebacker Garrett Wilson also left in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury. Up next for the Broncos is a preseason finale against the New Orleans Saints next weekend. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! Did you know: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.
