Toronto stocks rise as soft inflation data boosts rate cut hopes

Reutersa day ago
Aug 19 (Reuters) - Canada's main index edged up on Tuesday, helped by gains in industrials and telecom stocks, as cooler-than-expected domestic inflation data kept the door open for the Bank of Canada to cut interest rates.
At 9:44 a.m. ET (1344 GMT), the Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.GSPTSE> was up 0.12% at 27,956.08 points, hovering near record levels.
A Reuters poll released on Tuesday found the index is set to extend its record-setting run this year and next as lower borrowing costs and potential greater clarity on U.S. tariffs offset expected pressure on corporate profits.
Canada's annual inflation rate eased to 1.7% in July from 1.9% in the prior month as lower year-on-year gasoline prices kept the consumer price index low, but core measures of inflation stayed sticky, data showed on Tuesday.
The annual rate of consumer price inflation moved further below the midpoint of the Bank of Canada's 1% to 3% target range.
Two-year government bond yields , influenced by short-term policy expectations, were down about 3.5 basis points at 2.704%.
Odds for a quarter-point rate cut by the BoC next month stood at about 40%, above 31.4% seen earlier in the day.
Allan Small, senior investment advisor at Allan Small Financial Group with iA Private Wealth, said that the inflation being well below the BoC's target and hits to the economy due to tariffs support the case for a rate cut.
Meanwhile, Air Canada (AC.TO), opens new tab rose 2% after its unionized flight attendants reached an agreement with the country's largest carrier to end a strike.
Sector-wise, capped communications (.GSPTTTS), opens new tab and industrials (.GSPTTIN), opens new tab led the gains, rising 0.5% and 0.4%, respectively.
Information technology and healthcare lost around 0.6% each. Heavyweight energy (.SPTTEN), opens new tab fell 0.2%, as crude prices fell on the rising chances of an end to sanctions on Russian crude.

Belarus and Iran, both friends of Putin, plan to strengthen military and broader ties

Aug 20 (Reuters) - Belarus and Iran - two countries that have backed Russia's war in Ukraine - plan to deepen bilateral ties across all areas including defence, their presidents said at talks in Minsk on Wednesday. Belarusian state news agency Belta said presidents Alexander Lukashenko and Masoud Pezeshkian agreed to work on a strategic partnership treaty. "In conditions of geopolitical turbulence, Minsk and Tehran are undertaking consistent and balanced steps to further develop cooperation, and are working hard to turn each new challenge into a new opportunity," it quoted Lukashenko as saying. "We are ready to discuss any issues, we have no closed topics," Lukashenko said, adding that the two countries could partner across a range of areas including "military-technical cooperation". Lukashenko, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, allowed Russia to use Belarusian territory as a launchpad for its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and later assented to hosting Russian tactical nuclear missiles. Iran has supplied drones to Russia for use in the war and Pezeshkian signed a strategic cooperation treaty with Putin in January, although it did not include a mutual defence clause. Both Iran and Belarus are under what Pezeshkian described as "illegal Western sanctions". Belta quoted him as saying Iran was ready to help Belarus "neutralise" such measures, noting that it had more than 40 years of experience in this area. Pezeshkian said the two countries needed to build their economic and other ties to a level that matched the high level of trust between them. "Of course, our common views should be implemented in the economic and cultural spheres, in the development of tourism between our countries, and also, as you noted, in the development of military-technical cooperation," Belta quoted him as telling Lukashenko.

Kenya in talks with China to convert dollar rail loan into yuan

NAIROBI, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Kenya is in talks with China to convert a dollar-denominated railway loan into Chinese yuan, an aide to the Finance Minister John Mbadi told Reuters on Wednesday. China is Kenya's biggest bilateral lender, and the country took on the debt to construct a $5 billion high-speed railway, one of the country's largest infrastructure projects to date. Bloomberg News reported the plans to convert the loan earlier on Wednesday, saying it would save money due to lower interest rates in China compared with the United States. Kenya has been working to reduce its debts, as investors and the International Monetary Fund say it remains at high risk of debt distress. Last year, the East African nation's efforts to hike taxes to improve its financial situation sparked deadly protests, leading the government to backtrack. It has since tried to find other ways to create more fiscal space. Chinese authorities were not immediately available for comment.

Peru's gold exports to China through June overtake all 2024

LIMA, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Peru's gold exports to China surged in the first half of 2025 to surpass shipments from all of last year, according to government data released in August. Global appetite for gold is rising amid trade tensions between the U.S. and China. Prices for the metal, a safe haven asset whose value typically rises in times of turmoil, hit record levels last year. Peru's gold exports to China reached $947 million in the first half of 2025, up nearly four times from the same period last year. That figure has been steadily rising. Peru exported $885 million in gold to China in 2024, a 410% increase from the $173 million in exports registered in 2023. Peru's global gold exports surged 46% year-on-year in the six months through June, to total $8.57 billion. China ranks fourth as the biggest gold buyer from Peru, after Canada, India and Switzerland. Local production of the precious metal has grown in recent years, along with concern that increasing amounts come from illegal mines that do not meet environmental regulations and are fueling violence.
