Jim Goodwin expects more from Dundee United after European progression

Jim Goodwin expects more from Dundee United after European progression

STV News3 days ago
Jim Goodwin admits improvement is required after Dundee United's 1-0 win over UNA Strassen took them through to the Conference League third qualifier with a 2-0 aggregate victory.
The Taysiders were unconvincing in Luxembourg but a header in the 64th minute from their Moldova international Iurie Iovu proved decisive and set up a third round qualifier against Rapid Vienna, following the Austrian side's victory over Decic.
Tannadice boss Goodwin was not fooled by what was an historic result, the first away from home in Europe since 1997.
He told BBC Scotland: 'I didn't realise it had been nearly 30 years since we won away from home in Europe.
'It's a great result for this new group of players. Any game away from home in Europe is extremely difficult, there are no easy ties.
'On paper people would have looked at the game and thought it should be straightforward but Strassen were technically very good.
'They're no mugs so we're delighted with the result and clean sheet but we know we have to improve. We were really untidy on the ball, maybe that was a case of nerves.
'Over the two ties I don't think anybody could argue we deserved to go through.
'Neither performance was perfect, we've got a lot to learn and we need to do it quickly.
'There are definitely things we need to brush up on. We were very untidy on the ball.
'When we did play and pass the ball quickly we got into dangerous areas but [Yevhenii] Kucherenko, over the two legs, has had very little to do.'

McGlynn hails battle-ready Falkirk squad after draw with Dundee United

John McGlynn believes his Falkirk players showed they are Premiership-ready with their 2-2 home draw against Dundee United on opening day. The Bairns won back-to-back promotions under their experienced boss and the fans watched the Championship flag being unfurled before the game, marking their return to the top flight after a 15-year absence. On-loan Barnsley forward Max Watters scored his first United goal in the 39th minute with a terrific volley, but midfielder Dylan Tait levelled in the 50th minute with a fine finish. Ivan Dolcek restored the Tannadice side's lead in the 71st minute with his first goal for the club before home defender Ethan Ross equalised with a deflected strike two minutes later for a deserved share of the spoils. McGlynn said: 'I don't think we've got our eyes closed. We know that the margins are finer in this league. 'We'll all look to learn from that and we will need to learn from that. But there's so many positives to take. 'A lot of these players have played in League One, they've stepped up to the Championship dealt with that, and today, I think they looked like Premiership players against Premiership players. 'We were 15 years out of it, the same group of players almost, stepping up to the challenge, 5700 season tickets. 'Dundee United filled their allocation as well. So great atmosphere. 'People want to come and be entertained. That was entertainment. That was definitely entertainment.' United boss Jim Goodwin was proud of his under-strength side's efforts in gaining a point after they had advanced to the Conference League third qualifying round against Rapid Wien with a 2-0 aggregate win over Luxembourg side UNA Strassen on Thursday night. He said: 'It's really strange to be sitting here on the opening day of the season and talking about the number of injuries we have. 'But there's no getting away from it. There's no excuses here. 'We're missing some real key players. Our captain and vice-captain, Ross Graham and Will Ferry. Ferry was a suspension. 'Ryan Strain, Amar Fatah and Kristijan Trapanovski were all missing and they can be great options for us off the bench or starting the game. 'A draw away from home, more often than not in this league, is not a bad result. 'On the back of us playing in Europe on Thursday, with the short turnaround and the lack of recovery time, I think we've got to be satisfied with a point. 'It was only a couple of years ago we were travelling to Arbroath to kick off the Championship season. 'In the space of two years, we're slightly disappointed to pick up a point on the opening day of the Premiership but looking forward to a game in Europe against Rapid Wien. 'When you put things in perspective, we've come a long way in a short period of time.' Ferry will be back from suspension for the midweek trip to Austria and Goodwin hopes some others will be available, although Trapanovski will see a specialist about his hamstring problem on Monday. Hibs' motivation at Dundee revealed as David Gray gives Lewis Miller transfer update after big win

Hibs manager David Gray applauded his players' application as they took just one game to get what they needed five matches to earn last season. It's the first weekend in August and the Easter Road side already have their first victory of the league campaign. Now he knows the trick is to follow it up quickly with another victory, against Kilmarnock next weekend ideally. That was the problem last season. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad It took until November last year for Hibs to collect a second league win, something which put Gray under almost intolerable pressure. This run included a 4-1 defeat at Dens Park against Dundee, who Hibs dispatched with considerable ease at the same venue in between tough European assignments to give their league campaign instant uplift. Hibs defender Rocky Bushiri overpowers Dundee forward Ashley Hay during the 2-1 win. | SNS Group 'It was a big part of my motivation today,' Gray acknowledged, when asked about last season's initial struggles. 'I heard a lot of people saying last season, 'imagine we had just a poor start, not a very poor start last season'. 'So the mindset of the players is, here's the first opportunity to try and put that right. It was always going to be a difficult day coming up here because of Thursday night (against Midtjylland), people looking at it saying, how can Hibs bounce back? Is there going to be a hangover? Have they got a squad to do it? And this was the best way to answer that. I thought it was a real professional performance and a fully deserved the three points." Hibs head to Serbia, where they face Partizan Belgrade on Thursday in a Conference League qualifying tie, on the back of a win earned by a quickfire first-half double from the impressive Kieron Bowie. 'I think he showed that's the reason why he was brought to the football club, because of the qualities he's got,' said Gray. 'You've seen that, I've mentioned a lot about being suited to Scottish football as well. The physicality, he really enjoys that side to the game and he was always one that was going to benefit from a strong pre-season. We're getting (the benefit of) that just now.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hibs don't rotate despite busy schedule Gray stuck with ten of the 11 players who lost in heart-breaking fashion to Midtjylland on Thursday at Easter Road. 'You can get caught up in how many minutes players have played, the emotional side of it,' he said. 'It's not as if we have gone Sunday, Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday, Thursday. So the players are fresh, they're ready to go and they're all playing with confidence. They want to try and stay in the team.' Only Jamie McGrath was left out and he came on in the second half for Junior Hoilett, who had replaced him in the starting XI. Gray was later asked about right back Lewis Miller, who has been linked with a move to Blackburn Rovers and is currently sidelined with injury. "It's been well documented there has been (interest) but right now he's still a Hibs player," said Gray. "Until he's not, my focus is trying to get him back on the pitch as quick as we can." It was a dispiriting start for Dundee and in particular their fans, who booed the team off after watching them muster just two shots on goal, one of which was their counter from Fin Robertson when they were already 2-0 down. Hibs head coach David Gray gives out instructions at Dens Park. | SNS Group Pressley stressed that he's realistic and made the point that nearly all the goals from last season were out of the team. As well as the departed Lyall Cameron and Scott Tiffoney, captain Simon Murray was injured. The manager said he saw 'green shoots' but the team will need time, with reinforcements a must. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Murray's return from a knee injury sustained in last weekend's League Cup win over Montrose is also a matter of great urgency, with a trip to Ibrox to face Rangers looming.
