Stellenbosch FC bank on reserve keeper Oscarine Masuluke for Confed Cup tilt

IOL News12-05-2025

Oscarine Masuluke Oscarine Masuluke was in goal for Stellenbosch FC in the first-leg CAF Confederations Cup semifinal in Zanzibar.
Stellenbosch FC have been dealt a significant setback in their pursuit of a top-three finish in the Betway Premiership after first-choice goalkeeper Sage Stephens has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a calf injury.
The bad news comes as the Winelands outfit intensify its chase for another tilt at the African club competition next season.
The 32-year-old sustained the injury during the on-field warm-up for the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final against Zamalek last month. Despite the setback, he played in the match in Cairo and kept a clean sheet in Stellenbosch's 1-0 victory, which secured their historic progression to the semi-finals.
Since then, Stephens' understudy Oscarine Masuluke has stepped in between the posts, featuring in the team's last five matches, three of which have ended in league victories against AmaZulu, Chippa United, and Golden Arrows.
This season, Masuluke has kept four clean sheets in five league matches.
In December 2016, Masuluke was famously nominated for the FIFA Puskas Award for 'Goal of the Year' after his stunning overhead bicycle kick for Baroka FC was the match-winning goal against Orlando Pirates.
He was also in goal for both legs of the semi-final tie against Tanzania's Simba SC, where Stellies bowed out 1-0 on aggregate.
Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker has made no secret of his desire for the club to return to the CAF Confederation Cup, but currently trails Sekhukhune by one point, with a game in hand.
With three matches remaining, Stellenbosch hold their destiny in their hands. Maximum points would seal third spot, but a tough run-in awaits: starting with a trip to champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday, followed by clashes with relegation-threatened SuperSport United and Mother City derby rivals Cape Town City.
As the season nears its conclusion, Stellenbosch is poised to push through obstacles, and fans will be hoping that the remaining matches will see them overcome the odds and secure a place amongst Africa's elite once more.
This season has brought unexpected twists for Stellenbosch FC, but with a promising squad and fierce determination, the battle for a top-three finish continues unabated.
Meanwhile, Sundowns have one hand on the coveted Premiership trophy following a commanding 3-0 victory over Chippa United at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday evening. Sundowns have now amassed 64 points, leaving them only four points shy of claiming their record-extending 18th league title.
The Tshwane giants show no signs of slowing down as their relentless march toward glory continues. The three points secured against Chippa maintained their impressive unbeaten home record.
Three points against Chippa mean Sundowns could lift the trophy as early as this weekend, provided they defeat Stellenbosch FC.
While Orlando Pirates remain mathematically in the hunt, they trail significantly on points, and must win all their remaining games and hope Sundowns lose at least twice, an almost impossible scenario.

Latest: Rulani Mokwena to Orlando Pirates is intensifying!

Orlando Pirates will begin new era which will include a new coach for the first time in three years. Pirates had stability under former coach Jose Riveiro who has just left the club to join Al Ahly. During his tenure, Riveiro has helped Pirates win five trophies. Three MTN8 titles in a row as well as back to back Nedbank Cup titles. Furthermore, Beyond that, he led the Buccaneers into a second place in the Betway Premiership. Beyond local boarders, he ensured qualification for the side, into the group stages of the CAF Champions League. After doing so for the first time since 2018, they finished top of their group and unbeaten. Riveiro led Pirates to a semifinal finish in the CAF Champions League, with a Nedbank Cup final too. That has seen a vacancy open up at the Sea Robbers for the first time. A familiar name has since resurfaced in Rulani Mokwena. Having had a short stint with the Buccaneers before, he has expressed interest in a potential return. Now it seems like there is more where that came from, after Pirates revealed an update on the matter. It is now claimed by Soccer-Laduma that the Buccaneers are, indeed, targeting a Mokwena return. 'At the moment no one wants to talk about it but it's believed that Rulani Mokwena is the coach in line to take over from Jose Riveiro. I can't say everything is finalised at the moment but things are looking good. For now it's more about the interest in the coach and Rulani Mokwena is one of those,' said the source. Mokwena previously served as an assistant coach and then interim coach at Pirates. Buccaneers, is he the right coach to take over from Riveiro? Let us know by clicking on the comment tab. Maema: I earned my place in Mamelodi Sundowns' Club World Cup squad

Neo Maema departed for the Fifa Club World Cup on Sunday with Mamelodi Sundowns. Photo: Itumeleng English Independent Media Image: Itumeleng English Independent Media Neo Maema believes he had long earned his ticket to the Fifa Club World Cup — hence he never doubted he would make Mamelodi Sundowns' final squad. Sundowns jetted off to Florida, US, on Sunday to begin their preparations for the global showpiece. Maema, sporting a short blonde hairstyle, was in high spirits at OR Tambo International, even vlogging for the club's social media platform, Mamelodi Sundowns TV. The 29-year-old's outlook was refreshing, given that he has been a bystander for the team this season, featuring in only 17 of 54 matches across all competitions. Despite his limited game-time, Maema had shone for the Brazilians in the previous two seasons, contributing significantly to their success both domestically and continentally. It's not arrogance — I just feel this is the reward for the work done by the players who were here two years ago,' the Sundowns attacker said. 'We qualified for the Club World Cup two seasons ago, I think. So, when you're still in the team, you just have to eat the fruit of the work you've put in. So, I am happy. 'I am disappointed for the ones who didn't make it, but that's the nature of the competition. It's a big club. I feel for them because they are my brothers.' Maema's limited involvement this season has fuelled speculation about his future at Sundowns, but he remained tight-lipped on the matter on Sunday. 'I'm not going to say anything about my future at the club. I am still a Mamelodi Sundowns player,' Maema affirmed. That moment between Kabelo Dlamini, Neo Maema and Tshegofatso Mabasa was special to witness 🤩 Watch until the end 👀#SSDiski — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) March 18, 2025 The Club World Cup will not only offer Maema a chance to buy himself more time at the club but also serve as an opportunity for Sundowns to seek some form of redemption. Sundowns missed out on the CAF Champions League crown two weeks ago, losing 3-2 on aggregate to Pyramids of Egypt in the final. That result was a bitter blow for the Brazilians, who had hoped to be third-time lucky after semi-final exits in the previous two seasons. 'It's disappointing to get close to the door, but we kept on knocking and it didn't open,' Maema said of their failed continental campaign. 'We knew it was going to be very difficult to win away. We played against a good team… and when things don't go your way, you can't play your normal football. 'It's a pain in the heart, but we have to move on. We lost out twice in a row in the semi-finals, so we don't want that to happen again. We have to bounce back quickly.' Sundowns have been drawn in Group F at the Club World Cup, alongside Ulsan Hyundai, Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense. They will open their campaign against Ulsan on Wednesday, 18 June. The Brazilians are eager to perform well on the global stage — not just to redeem themselves but also to showcase their talent to scouts from overseas clubs. 'It's disappointing, but there's nothing we can do about it. We just have to accept it and, as men, help the youngsters in the team,' Maema said. 'We have to believe that someday we will win it, but for now, we must focus on the opportunity ahead and see it as a chance for everyone to showcase their talent.'

'Stellies are very keen, but they haven't made a formal approach yet. Sekhukhune are also interested,' a source close to both clubs revealed. 'He's only 28 and can play different roles which makes him valuable. At this stage, it's still early and his camp is in no rush to make a decision.'
