Online bus ticketing platform redBus has released its FY25 edition of the India Intercity BusTrack Report, estimating that over 223.85 million intercity journeys were made in the last financial year. The figure, which mirrors the population size of Brazil, reflects the enduring relevance of buses as a core component of India's transport infrastructure. The annual report provides a detailed picture of intercity travel trends across states, regions, and user segments, building on redBus' earlier quarterly analyses. For FY25, the company has also included insights from the January–March quarter to supplement the year-round overview with more recent data points. From religious pilgrimages and festive travel to long-distance student migration and last-minute bookings, the report shows how bus travel remains among the most democratic and versatile modes of transport in India. On average, more than 650,000 people travelled by bus daily, comparable to the population of cities like Jamshedpur or Amravati.'The past year has underscored the vital role intercity bus travel plays in India's mobility landscape, yet it remains one of the least studied modes of transport,' said Prakash Sangam, CEO, redBus. 'With redBus BusTrack, we set out to build a year-long, data-driven view of the industry across seasons, regions, and user groups. This report is a step toward greater transparency and informed decision-making across the travel ecosystem.'Among the key findings, India witnessed the launch of over 72,000 new intercity routes in FY25. The country also recorded its longest single ride—3,062 kilometres—from Ernakulam to Dharamshala. A notable shift towards clean mobility was observed, with 760 electric buses now operational in the intercity segment. The total fleet grew by 6,400 buses, adding 265,000 daily seats for passengers. The highest single-day ridership was recorded on 1 November 2024, the day after Diwali, with more than 970,000 travellers in a single day. The report also highlights the influence of digitisation in Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns, increased demand for overnight comfort travel, and data-led forecasting for private and state-run operators. The report, drawing insights from over 220 million journeys, is available on the redBus Blog.

11 Stores in a Day, Quick Commerce by Diwali: Inside Libas' festive growth playbook
To gear up for the festive season, Libas is opening 11 company-owned and company-operated EBOs on August 15, along with betting big on quick commerce . The brand is also planning to set up its own warehouses, upgrade its app experience, and launch its own quick commerce by Diwali , Sidhant Keshwani, founder & CEO, Libas told ETRetail. In quick commerce, the brand already has a presence across Zepto, Myntra Now, and Flipkart Minutes, and now it is further planning to expand its presence on Swiggy Instamart as well before Diwali. "This festive season, we are expecting a growth of around 30-35 per cent over the last 2 years," he asserted. At present, quick commerce contributes only one per cent of the overall revenue of the brand; however, the brand plans to take it to 10 per cent by the end of the next fiscal year. "By Diwali, we will be launching our quick commerce in a few pin codes, and depending on the response, we will be scaling it further. Currently, we are in the Beta testing mode," he explained. "In e-commerce, brands generally keep a stock of up to 60-75 days; however, through quick commerce, we plan to bring it down to 45 days," he further added. Going ahead, the brand foresees 60-70 per cent of the online revenue coming from its mobile app. The brand, which operates on the COCO model, will be opening these upcoming stores at locations including Jasola, Rohini, and Gaur City in Delhi-NCR; Lucknow; Indore; Kochi; Amritsar; Udaipur; Bel Road and Sarjapur in Bengaluru; and Mumbai. The brand opens stores across 2 sizes - 1,000 and 2,500 and the CAPEX to open a store of the size stands around Rs 80 lakh. "We are eyeing to close this fiscal with 70 operating stores and will be adding another 60-70 stores next fiscal year as well," he stated. At present, 80 per cent of the revenue of the brand is contributed by online channels, and the remaining 20 per cent comes from offline channels. "We plan to change it to 60:40 between online and offline by the end of the next fiscal year," he said. "Currently, 60 per cent of our business comes from metro cities; however, the majority of new customer acquisition and new growth is coming from smaller towns now," he asserted. The brand, which has a presence across more than 700 shop-in-shops, plans to expand its presence to 100 more MBOs by this fiscal year's end. "We are not expanding our presence at shop-in-shops in a big way because the majority of our investments are going into expanding our own stores," he said. Going ahead, the brand is also planning to foray into new categories like perfumes and bet big on sarees . By the end of the next fiscal year, it plans to take the contribution of sarees up to 15 per cent of the overall business of the brand. "At present, we offer 75 styles every week and plan to scale it up to 200 every week by next year," he asserted. Currently, the average order value for the brand online stands at Rs 1,600- Rs 1,800, and offline, it is around Rs 3,000. The brand, which raised Rs 150 crore from ICICI Ventures last year, is planning to do a small pre-IPO round to support its offline expansion plans. "We are planning to go public in the next 2 years," he stated. The brand, which closed the last fiscal year with early single-digit EBITDA last fiscal year, is planning to close this fiscal year with Rs 650 crore and eyes to be a Rs 1,000 crore brand by the next fiscal year end.

Tripping up
When travel enthusiasts forget to read the newspaper Kamala is a travel enthusiast. She constantly wants to be going somewhere. I'm very happy pottering around the house. Rab ne bana di jodi as Mark Twain once said. People believe anything that Mark Twain has supposedly said. Anyway, coming back to my travails, Kamala wanted to climb a mountain or plumb the depths of the Mariana Trench. 'Let's do Char Dham Yatra!' she said cheerfully. I'm a paunchy ageing Indian man – one Dham would be a challenge. She countered my objections with offers of helicopters, ponies, prayers. We would certainly need prayers, but more during the journey. Given the crashing helicopters, roads being washed away by flash floods, environmental disasters unfolding out of unplanned tunnels and mountains of garbage. The green of nature, which tourists look forward to, has been replaced by the same tourists with green plastic bottles. And chips packets still filled with the addictive promise of health hazards. Still, wife was hell-bent on a holiday. Kashmir felt a bit dicey at the moment. Especially for husbands. So did Mizoram. Manipur was not being discussed – by anyone. Several countries were at war with each other and it was still confusing whose side we were taking. Russia was an option but if we put in an application to go there, would we be adding fuel to the fire? China was out of the question, except if we wanted to buy cheap lights for Diwali or plastic flags for Independence Day. Maldives was our friend again but the trolls had not approved a holiday or a hug there for the Common Man. Ireland was discriminating against browner people – a tradition that we find fair and lovely here too. Cambodia. Malaysia. Egypt. Afghanistan, Iran, Ukraine. Her list was endless and disassociated from geopolitics. You must read the newspaper more often Kamala, I suggested. Instead of only listening to what the nation demands to know. As she scrolled for new potential holiday spots and drooled over bungee jumping and snorkeling, Kamala complained that I had no sense of adventure. I object. I get excitement driving on the roads with unpredictable potholes and puddles after the incessant rains. Or walking down a footpath with open manholes and uneven pavement stones. I'm tripping – both literally and figuratively. I don't need to travel to get my adventure or adrenaline rush. My taxes pay for them. State to buy 50K EVMs, rent another 25K to conduct local body polls
Mumbai: The state election commission (SEC) in Maharashtra has placed an order for purchasing 50,000 electronic voting machines (EVMs) and signed a memorandum of understanding with the Madhya Pradesh state election commission for renting an additional 25,000 EVMs which will be used during the upcoming local body polls. Representational image (HT Photo) The SEC is planning to hold elections to 687 rural and urban local bodies across Maharashtra in three phases after Diwali, and around 150,000 EVMs would be required for the exercise, as per estimates of SEC officials. 'The 50,000 EVMs ordered from the Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) can be used for polling in multi-member wards,' said Dinesh Waghmare, state election commissioner. Typically, in Lok Sabha and assembly elections, voters elect only one candidate per constituency. But in case of elections to some municipal corporations and district councils in the state, voters must elect multiple members for a single ward, which is possible only if EVMs accommodate multiple members on the ballot unit, explained officials. The 50,000 EVMs from ECIL, which are duly equipped, will cost ₹20,000 per unit including memory module and batter, and are likely to be delivered by October while the rental for 25,000 EVMs from the Madhya Pradesh SEC will be ₹1,000 per unit, said Waghmare. According to the SEC's plans, local body polls in the state are likely to be held in three phases after Diwali. District councils and panchayat samitis will go to polls in the first phase, likely in November, followed by municipal councils and nagar panchayats in the second phase, likely in December. Elections to municipal corporations including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will be held in the third phase. Counting of votes may also be undertaken in a phased manner without waiting for completion of all three phases of polling and a final decision would be taken after discussion with various political parties, said an official from the urban development department. 'If counting is conducted in a phased manner, EVMs used in the first phase will be freed for subsequent phases,' the official said. According to SEC officials, the process of ward formation in district councils and panchayat samitis is likely to be completed by August 25. For municipal councils, nagar panchayats, and municipal corporations, it will be completed by October 13. Finalisation of voters' list and draws for reservation will be completed in 15 days following the process of ward formation. 'Elections can be held around 45 days after all these steps are completed,' said an official.
