Eagles send QB Kenny Pickett to the Browns, acquire Dorian Thompson-Robinson in exchange

Yahoo10-03-2025
On Monday, the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns each made a change in the quarterback room.
The Eagles sent QB Kenny Pickett to the Browns, with Cleveland sending Dorian Thompson-Robinson in return, per multiple reports. In addition to swapping backup quarterbacks, Philadelphia also receives a 2025 fifth-round pick in the trade.
Both Pickett and Thompson-Robinson saw some playing time this past season while filling in for starting QBs Jalen Hurts and Deshaun Watson, respectively.
Pickett joined the Eagles this season after two years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who picked him in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Pitt. He played in five games and had one start in 2024. During those games, the 26-year-old QB threw for 291 yards and two touchdowns with a 59.5% passing percentage.
Thompson-Robinson, 25, spent two seasons with Cleveland, filling in both years due to Watson injuries. This year, he started two games and played seven total, throwing for 440 yards. Thompson-Robinson was briefly benched with a finger injury, but returned before the end of the season to replace a struggling Jameis Winston.
The Eagles already lost several pieces of their Super Bowl-winning roster on Monday, with a number of key defensive players departing in free agency. Pickett, a smaller part of the Philadelphia offense, will now join a Browns QB room with a few wrinkles to iron out — even with a newly re-signed Myles Garrett on the roster.

Gabriel denies ‘entertainers' jab was aimed at Browns teammate Shedeur Sanders

Cleveland Browns quarterback Dillon Gabriel has denied he was referring to his teammate Shedeur Sanders when he aimed a jab at 'entertainers' in the NFL. 'There's entertainers and there's competitors, and I totally understand that. But my job is to compete. And that's what I'm focused on doing,' Gabriel told CBS from the sidelines during the Browns' preseason victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday. Gabriel completed 13 of 18 passes for 143 yards and an interception. Related: The draft roughed up Shedeur Sanders. The NFL will demand even more Many on social media thought the comment was a reference to Sanders, the son of hall of famer Deion Sanders, who has received huge amounts of media attention since the Browns took him in the fifth round of this year's draft. The Browns picked Gabriel in the third round of the same draft and the duo are in a battle with Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett to win the starter's job this season. Flacco is expected to start in Cleveland's opening game, but Sanders was impressive in his preseason debut last week before an oblique injury forced him to miss Saturday's game. 'I'm all about our team and each other,' Gabriel said after Saturday's game. 'I would never make that [comment about Sanders] and I've said it before that's why it's interesting, but for me I've explained it entertainers are you all, competitor, that's what I am, and all my teammates and we both have jobs to do, so that's it.'

Eagles' Lane Johnson Shares Strong Thoughts on Jalen Hurts

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Since entering the national spotlight as the franchise quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles, Jalen Hurts might be undervalued by outside eyes. When it comes to the All-Pro offensive lineman Lane Johnson, he has plenty of positives to say about the quarterback he's been blocking for over the past five years. What is it about Hurts that caught Johnson's attention early on—and continues to later on in the young quarterback's career? "I think it's his demeanor," Johnson told Ryan Clark of 'The Pivot' podcast. "The city's very rambunctious, very passionate. I think you need a guy who's very even-keeled. Emotions don't ever get high, even when we're winning. We win a Super Bowl. We smiled a couple of times, but it was back to work. When you have a guy like that, when he first came in, you don't know if it's the role he's playing, but that's how he's always been. For me, it allows guys to stay calm in pressure moments. Seeing a guy never get rattled." Jalen Hurts #1 of the Philadelphia Eagles looks on against the Cleveland Browns during the NFL Preseason 2025 game at Lincoln Financial Field on August 16, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Cleveland Browns defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 22-13. MoreHurts' calm persona once left many wondering if his leadership was up to par for an NFL quarterback. Over time, it became clear that Hurts may just be one of the best motivators at the position. While he might struggle to be a critics favorite when it comes to the "elite quarterback" conversation, nobody can deny that Hurts isn't a winner. Many point to the loads of talent surrounding Hurts as a primary reason why he's successful. Lane Johnson wants the world to know that Hurts carries a great work ethic with him. "With Jalen, man, he's always working," Johnson added. "You go in there before practice, he's got his own routine. It's never wavered since he's been a rookie. It only kept developing. Now, as he's aging, he's becoming more personable with the guys on the team. But he's always been the same leader, same demeanor from day one. Just more evolved over the past couple of years. I respect how he works." Hurts has started 66 games in the NFL. Since earning starter reps in 2020 as a rookie, Hurts has achieved a record of 46-20 during the regular season. He's thrown for 14,667 yards, 85 touchdowns, and just 39 interceptions. On the ground, Hurts has rushed for 3,133 yards and 55 touchdowns. He's been to two Super Bowls and was recently crowned the MVP of Super Bowl LIX after the Eagles took down the Kansas City Chiefs. Johnson has played with a handful of quarterbacks throughout his career. At this point, Hurts is by far the most successful one. No. 1 might have a hard time winning over the critics, but it's clear that an eventual franchise legend for the Eagles sees the value in the two-time Pro Bowl passer.
