Former LSU baseball standouts Paul Skenes, Alex Bregman named MLB All-Stars

USA Today08-07-2025
Former LSU baseball stars Paul Skenes and Alex Bregman were named to the 2025 MLB All-Star game rosters on Sunday.
Skenes makes it two straight appearances after earning the National League's starting pitching spot in 2024. The right-handed pitcher headlines the starting rotation for the Pittsburgh Pirates and boasts a National League-best 1.94 ERA.
Through 116 innings, Skenes has a .92 WHIP and 125 strikeouts. The marks are second and fourth, respectively, in the National League. Opposing teams are batting .186 against him and of his 19 games in 2025, he allowed three or more runs just three times.
Bregman returns to the All-Star lineup for a third time, the last being in 2019, and the first time as part of the Boston Red Sox. The third baseman hasn't played since May 23 due to a quad strain but was hitting .299 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs beforehand. Bregman's .553 slugging percentage over that time frame is his best since his last All-Star game appearance.

Zach Neto hits 2 homers, Angels overcome Shohei Ohtani's 42nd HR for a 7-4 win over the Dodgers

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Zach Neto hit his eighth leadoff home run of the season and added another homer in the sixth, and the Los Angeles Angels overcame Shohei Ohtani's 42nd homer during an eighth-inning rally in their 7-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night. Mike Trout had a two-run single and Yoán Moncada drove in two runs for the Angels, who are improbably 4-0 in the Freeway Series this season. The defending World Series champion Dodgers' lead over San Diego in the NL West also slipped to just one game for the first time since June 14 with the Padres' win over San Francisco. The Dodgers trailed 7-0 before Ohtani homered in his third straight game, driving a solo shot to right in the eighth inning. Ohtani has a 10-game hitting streak in August, and he has four homers among his nine hits in the Dodgers' last five games. Max Muncy followed with a three-run homer to slash the Angels' big lead, but Connor Brogdon ended the eighth before Kenley Jansen earned his 22nd save. Angels right fielder Gustavo Campero got injured while chasing Muncy's drive into the short porch. He was taken off the field on a cart. José Soriano (8-9) allowed only two singles and two walks while throttling the Dodgers over six scoreless innings of two-hit ball. Neto reached base five times during his third career multihomer game, starting when he crushed Yoshinobu Yamamoto's first career pitch in Anaheim for his 18th homer. Yamamoto (10-8) had one of the poorest outings in his solid season, yielding six runs on six hits and five walks while failing to get out of the fifth inning. Key moment Bryce Teodosio and Neto scored in the fifth on Trout's bases-loaded single. Moncada and Campero added RBIs while the Angels chased Yamamoto. Key stat The Dodgers are 10-12 since the All-Star break. Up next The Dodgers' Emmet Sheehan (3-2, 3.00 ERA) will start against Angels reliever Victor Mederos, who will be the opener in a bullpen game Tuesday after Tyler Anderson was ruled out with a back injury. ___ AP MLB:

How many five-star recruits will LSU football sign in its 2026 class?

LSU football is aiming to sign the No. 1-ranked recruiting class in 2026. LSU already has two consensus five-star commits, but LSU will need a couple more to win the recruiting title. In 2025, LSU signed two recruits ranked as five-stars in the Rivals Industry Rankings. But LSU left talent on the table. Five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood and five-star wide receiver Dakorien Moore were both LSU commits at one point before flipping to Michigan and Oregon, respectively. LSU is looking for a stronger finish to the recruiting cycle in 2026. So, just how many five-stars will LSU sign in 2026? Let's start with the two five-stars already committed. Wide receiver Tristen Keys and defensive tackle Lamar Brown currently headline the LSU class. Per the Rivals Industry Rankings, Keys is the No. 7-ranked player in the class and No. 1 at his position. Brown sits No. 2 overall in the Industry Rankings, but ESPN slots the Louisiana product as the No. 1 player in the country. For LSU to gain another five-star, the Tigers don't have to add a new commitment. There's a good chance that at least one of LSU's current commits gets a bump. Defenders Richard Anderson and Trenton Henderson are the obvious candidates. Henderson ranks No. 36 in the Rivals Industry Rankings and already has a fifth-star from 247Sports. With a big senior year, Henderson could enter the consensus five-star status. The same could be said for Anderson, who has flirted with five-star status throughout his recruitment. Expect at least one of those players to earn star No. 5 by signing day. Then we have the players LSU still wants to add. The top uncommitted recruit left on LSU's board is five-star offensive lineman Darius Gray. The Tigers have gone back and forth with South Carolina for Gray's services, but South Carolina is trending. LSU is right there, though. Gray is the No. 1-ranked interior offensive lineman in the Rivals Industry Rankings. At quarterback, LSU is still pushing for Texas commit Dia Bell. Bell is the No. 1-ranked QB in the country and would be a massive addition to LSU's class, but the Tigers' chances of a flip are slim. Still, don't count LSU out. Verdict: How many five-star recruits will LSU football sign in 2026? I think LSU holds on to Keys and Brown, and both players retain five-star status throughout the recruitment process. The most likely scenario is LSU finishing with three five-stars. Whether it's a commitment from Gray or Henderson getting a rankings bump.
