Lego has some Wicked new Wizard of Oz sets for young and adult fans

Metro5 days ago
Wicked: For Good is out in cinemas this Christmas and Lego already has a bunch of neat looking sets planned, based on the finale of Elphaba and Galinda's story.
Wicked is pretty weird concept when you think about it. It's at the same time a prequel, sidequel, and sequel to the Wizard of Oz movie, from 1939. So while Elphaba and Galinda are the focus of the story, everything with Dorthy and friends is still going on at the same time.
To complicate things further, last year's Wicked movie only tells the first half of the story from the original musical, so the new Lego sets this year focus on the second movie and the iconic scenes from that.
Seven new sets were unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con, all at varying different price points and aimed at different kinds of fans, with the cheapest being just £18 and the most expensive £140.
This is going to be the big one for adult fans, because it features Emerald City from the original Wizard of Oz movie as a piece of brick-built wall art. It's basically a giant poster made of Lego, but it also comes with minifigures of Dorothy (and Toto), Cowardly Lion, Scarecrow (as Fiyero), Tin Man, Elphaba, and Galinda. What'll be of particular interest to adult fans is that they're all regular-sized minifigures, whereas most of the other Wicked sets use the larger Friends-sized minidolls.
The cheapest set is Elphaba's woodland retreat, filled with her magical equipment, a number of cute furry animals, and minidolls of her and Fiyero. It even includes the poppy Fiyero gives to Elphaba, pressed inside Glinda's book. It has an age rating of 7+, so it's very easy to build, even though the organic looking tree is quite impressive.
There's a neat trick here where when the model of Glinda's wedding scene is closed it's blocked by two giant butterflies, but by opening it up you can see inside and recreate the disastrous day of Glinda's wedding. To complete the scene you get a wedding cake, a heart-shaped invitation, Glinda's bouquet from Fiyero, and… a changeable face for when things go wrong.
The ending of the entire Wicked saga is recreated in this set, that includes both a detailed model of Emerald City and the ominous Kiamo Ko Castle. It comes with minidolls of Glinda and Elphaba, plus a flying monkey, while the buildings are filled with secret compartments and references to the story, as well as a brick-built rainbow.
Even though it's not an adult set, there's some really nice building techniques on the roof of the Munchkin house in this set. The house comes on two storeys and there's a bubble for Glinda that acts the same as in the movie, complete with a working pedal. You also get three minidolls, with Elphaba and her broomstick, Glinda in her tiara, and Boq.
The other expensive set aimed at adults, these highly detailed (and entirely functional) bookends also come with minifigures instead of minidolls. You get six in total, with Glinda, Elphaba, The Wizard, Madame Morrible, Fiyero, and Pfannee – all with unique costumes and accessories. At the back of the bookends there's also an interior build that fits the minifigures, one focused on Glinda and the other on Elphaba.
This might be the cheapest set but it is a cool one, with two BrickHeadz figures for Wicked's main characters. BrickHeadz is basically Lego's version of Funko Pop!, except because it's Lego you can customise them however you want. These ones come with some neat printed pieces and accessories for both characters. More Trending
Although they're already available to pre-order on the Lego website, the sets won't be released until September 1. The actual movie, entitled Wicked: For Good, will launch in theatres on November 21.

Outlander's Sam Heughan gives blunt insight into 'most hated line' from show

Outlander star Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie Fraser in the STARZ series, opened up about a line he "had a real problem with" during the show's Comic-Con panel. Outlander actor Sam Heughan has disclosed his least favourite line from his character Jamie Fraser in the Starz series. The historical fantasy show on STARZ held a panel at San Diego Comic-Con on the coveted Hall H stage on Friday, July 25. ‌ The Outlander panel featured Sam alongside his co-stars Sophie Skelton (Brianna MacKenzie) and Richard (Roger MacKenzie), as well as showrunner Matthew B. Roberts and executive producer Maril Davis. During the discussion, Sam touched upon various topics as the show prepares for its final season, including one particular line from the script that he found particularly irksome. ‌ "There was one time Matt and I fell out," the 45-year-old actor explained. "I was floating in a very large bathtub in South Africa, and the line was, 'If you die, I'll kill you.' And I had a real problem with that." ‌ "I just wanted Matt to explain it to me," Sam continued. Matt interjected that he did indeed explain it, "over and over again." The Scottish-born actor then recounted how Matt and co-star Caitríona Balfe were shouting at him to "'just say the f---ing line". ‌ Sam is referring to a memorable scene in the season three finale episode titled Eye of the Storm, where Jamie rescues Claire after she nearly drowns, reports the Irish Star. He concluded his comments by praising the author of Outlander, Diana Gabaldon, for penning such "amazing books." The STARZ series is adapted from the eponymous book series. To date, nine books have been released in the series, with the author reportedly planning a total of ten. ‌ The series centres around Claire Randall, a former WWII nurse who inadvertently time-travels from 20th-century Britain to 17th-century Scotland. During her unexpected sojourn in Scotland, she encounters and falls head over heels for a dashing Highland warrior named Jamie Fraser. ‌ Outlander first graced our screens in August 2014, thanks to the adaptation efforts of Ronald D. Moore. The much-loved show is set to conclude with its eighth and final season, anticipated to air in early 2026. The suspenseful ending of season seven left many fans at the panel eager for answers about what lies ahead for Claire and Jamie. In the seventh season of Outlander, we saw Claire and Jamie embark on a perilous journey back to Scotland, where their love story first unfolded in season one. Despite Outlander nearing its end, the universe is expanding with the introduction of a prequel series titled Outlander: Blood of My Blood. This new series will delve into the lives of Jamie and Claire's parents.

Nearly 130 venues to take part in 2025 Kirkcudbright Art and Crafts Trail

There's sure to be something for everyone in the town between Friday and Monday. Nearly 130 venues are taking part in this weekend's Kirkcudbright Art and Crafts Trail. ‌ There's sure to be something for everyone in the town between Friday and Monday – whether that's Rapunzel in MacLellan's Castle, window displays or the flower festival at the parish church. ‌ Organiser Colin Saul said: 'We have 128 studios and venues consist of houses, gardens, studios and installations at various points. ‌ 'There's the usual mix of highly skilled artwork, some of which is on the wall, and just anyone who wants to join in. 'Soaperie Gardens becomes very, very busy because we've got about 30 gazebos. 'They're a fairly good starting point but what we want people to do is follow the art and craft trail map, which takes you all around the town – not just the high street but the extremities. ‌ 'Around the trail there's always opportunity to take part in art, including eco art next to the castle. 'Most of what goes on is free and it's always totally inclusive.' ‌ There will be music going on around the town as well as performances from a group of Morris dancers. New for this year include a tremendous Lego exhibition called Boatshed Bricks in St Andrew's Church Hall and a model railway display in the community centre. ‌ And Colin will once again be welcoming people to his display at Greengate. He said: 'It's not a garden, it's an experience, and people are often blown away by it. 'We'll be having music and teas, coffees and cakes. 'I look forward to meeting people at Greengate, whether it's their first time or they've been before. 'There's lots of old favourites but plenty of new ones. There's plenty to do and I'm sure people could come back again for a second day.'

BBC Great British Sewing Bee fans 'not happy' after 'boring' challenge

The Great British Sewing Bee viewers were left far from impressed after the most recent episode of the BBC show BBC viewers were left underwhelmed by the latest instalment of The Great British Sewing Bee. ‌ In the episode aired on Tuesday (July 29), the sewers tackled a variety of tasks designed to pay tribute to iconic fashion figures. ‌ The challenges ranged from recreating Diane von Furstenberg's celebrated wrap dress to emulating Vivienne Westwood's punk aesthetic using household textiles. The contestants had their work cut out for them. ‌ For the grand finale, they were tasked with crafting opulent pieces inspired by Versace, but one participant was unimpressed by the renowned designer's signature style. Caz, 59, decided to put her own twist on the final challenge with a Wizard of Oz-themed creation, which ultimately led to her victory, reports Wales Online. Despite the judges' approval, not all viewers were convinced, with one criticising: "Most of these dresses are not very Versace to be honest." ‌ Another viewer remarked: "The Caz dress was more The Waltons than Versace" while another added: "Yasmin should have won that." Echoing the discontent, someone else exclaimed: "What a s***e garment of the week." ‌ One viewer expressed disappointment, saying: "That was the most boring garment of the week. Yes it was made well but just boring to look at." Meanwhile, another pointed out: "Easy to win garment of the week when everyone is working with hard fabrics and you make a dorothy dress instead." One viewer chimed in with support, saying: "I'm with really a Versace fan. I wouldn't choose to wear it. I like her Dorothy take." ‌ Another was keen on the design: "I'm gonna need that Dorothy dress." During the programme, judge Patrick Grant highlighted several iconic Versace elements for the contestants to draw inspiration from, such as the medusa head, black and gold, tropical prints, and bondage-style fashion. However, Caz had a different vision. ‌ She openly expressed her distaste for the classic black and gold Versace look, stating: "I don't really like that early black and gold Versace, it's not me." While presenting her gingham fabric, she acknowledged it didn't exactly embody the legendary designer's signature style. When probed about her creative direction, Caz explained: "Well, I'm not a huge Versace fan, but when I read up, they said that Donatella gets inspiration from anywhere and everywhere." She added: "I watch a lot of films, so this is inspired by the Dorothy dress in the Wizard of Oz." Caz's unique approach paid off as she triumphed in the initial wrap dress challenge, an achievement that left her feeling 'validated'. Unfortunately, the episode also saw the departure of Glendora from the contest, as judges Paul and Esme Young decided it was time for her to leave.
