The dramatic moment a pensioner gets stuck driving down iconic Rome landmark - before being hoisted out by crane

A pensioner accidentally got stuck driving down Rome's famous Spanish Steps, and ended up having to be rescued by police, firefighters and a crane.
At around 4am on Tuesday, an unnamed 80-year-old man was driving his Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan through Italy 's capital, when he accidentally turned onto the historic landmark.
A video that's gone viral shows the car falling halfway down the 135 stone steps, before coming to a complete stop, wedged and unable to move further.
The car is then seen being lifted off the Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti by a crane.
Following the incident, the area was quickly cordoned off, police officers and firefighters were called to the scene, and public access to the Spanish Steps was temporarily restricted.
According to CNN, archaeologists were also brought in to assess the site for any damage, which is a common occurrence with protected heritage sites.
Although an inspection revealed damage to the vehicle, officials have yet to confirm whether the staircase itself sustained any harm.
While it's unclear how exactly this accident happened, the man told police he'd been 'going to work' at the time.

The officers at the scene stopped him and took him to hospital, where tests confirmed he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and was unharmed.
This isn't the first time someone has mistakenly driven down the Spanish Steps.
In 2022, a 37-year-old man from Saudi Arabia drove a Maserati down the same staircase, causing physical damage to the monument.
Unlike this man, that driver fled the scene but was later tracked down thanks to CCTV footage and rental car records.
He was eventually arrested at Milan's Malpensa airport and charged with aggravated damage to cultural heritage and monuments.

British superyacht Bayesian resurfaces for 1st time since August sinking ahead of recovery

The British superyacht that sank off Sicily last August killing seven people resurfaced for the first time Friday as salvage recovery crews readied it to be hauled ashore for further investigation. The white top and blue hull of the 56-meter (184-foot) Bayesian emerged from the depths of the sea in a holding area of a yellow floating crane barge. The coast guard said the actual recovery was scheduled to begin Saturday morning. A spokesman for TMC Maritime, which is conducting the recovery operation, said the vessel has been slowly raised from the seabed, 50 meters (165-feet) down, over the past three days to allow the steel lifting straps, slings and harnesses to be secured under the keel. What became visible for the first time Friday on the surface of the water was the top of the passenger area of the Bayesian where passengers would sit, known as the accommodation area, said a spokesman for TMC Maritime, David Wilson. The British-flagged luxury superyacht sank Aug. 19 off Porticello near Palermo during a violent storm, killing U.K. tech magnate Mike Lynch, his daughter and five others. Fifteen people survived, including the captain and all crew members except the chef. Italian authorities are conducting a full criminal investigation. When it resurfaced, the Bayesian was missing its 72-meter (236-foot) mast, which was cut down and left on the seabed for future removal. The mast had to be detached to allow the hull to be brought to a nearly upright position that would allow the craft to be surfaced, TMC Maritime said earlier this week. British investigators said in an interim report issued last month that the yacht was knocked over by 'extreme wind' and couldn't recover. The report stated that the Bayesian had chosen the site where it sank as shelter from forecast thunderstorms. Wind speeds exceeded 70 knots (81 mph) at the time of the sinking and 'violently' knocked the vessel over to a 90-degree angle in under 15 seconds. Lynch had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with his family and the people who had defended him at trial.

UK police arrest six on suspicion of assault near Iran's London embassy

LONDON, June 20 (Reuters) - British police arrested six men on suspicion of grievous bodily harm on Friday following reports of an altercation at a location close to the Iranian embassy in London. "Six men have been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm – they remain in police custody," police said in a statement. Local media reported the arrests took place at a protest against the Iranian leadership. Police did not link the arrests to the Iranian embassy, but said they took place on Prince's Gate in London, which is where the embassy is located. "Two men were treated for injuries at the scene and have been taken to hospital for further treatment by the London Ambulance Service. 'Police have cordoned off the area while initial investigations take place.'

Off-duty policeman charged after alleged assault of two women

A senior constable has been charged with two assault offences following an alleged altercation with two women at a home in Sydney. NSW Police were called to a property in the southern suburb of Caringbah on February 9 after reports of a domestic violence incident. Officers were told a 53-year-old man had allegedly assaulted two women, aged 53 and 36, during an altercation. He was arrested and taken to Sutherland Police Station where he was later released pending further investigation. Four months later, NSW Police revealed the man is a senior constable attached to a specialist command. He has not been identified. The policeman was issued a court attendance notice on Friday and charged with one count of common assault (domestic violence) and one count of common assault. He is due to appear before Sutherland Local Court on August 6. NSW Police said the senior constable's employment status is currently under review.
