CPI(M) pushes back against the ‘capital punishment' controversy centred around late V.S.
The recent portrayal by two former CPI(M) insiders that the party had singled out Achuthanandan for harsh criticism during its 2015 State conference in Alappuzha, forcing the veteran to exit the venue in distress, sparked the dispute, which erupted, discomfortingly for the party, in the wake of the outpouring of public grief for the departed leader.
The controversy flared last week after former CPI(M) legislator and dramatist Pirappancode Murali alleged that a young leader had rhetorically recommended 'capital punishment' for Achuthanandan, following the presentation of a 'chargesheet', accusing the veteran of pursuing a cult of the individual that undervalued the role of the party and the masses in the struggle for working-class goals.
On Friday (July 25, 2025) last, CPI(M) State Secretary M.V. Govindan dismissed Mr. Murali's averments, terming them 'pure nonsense'. He noted that Mr. Murali was no longer a party member and alleged that the latter had stoked controversy to get traction for an upcoming memoir. He accused the 'right-wing' media of 'vilifying communist leaders when alive and canonising them when dead to weaken the party'.
Nevertheless, the dispute appeared to gain some political momentum on Sunday (July 27, 2025), with CPI(M)'s former MP, Suresh Kurup, seemingly endorsing Mr. Murali's allegations in an opinion piece published by a leading Malayalam daily on the same day.
In the article reminiscing about his long years in the CPI(M) with Achuthanandan, Mr. Kurup alleged that a 'young woman leader old enough to be Achuthanandan's granddaughter had recommended capital punishment' at the State conference for the leaders' perceived transgressions.
General Education Minister and CPI(M) State Committee member rejected the accusations. 'The State conference elevated me to the State committee. No such thing transpired as alleged', he stated.
Another CPI(M) State committee member, Kadakampally Surendran, said the accusations 'were startling and aimed at slurring the character of rising stars in the party, including M. Swaraj'. He said the 'right-wing media' hounded Achutnandan and Kodiyeri in their lifetime.
'Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan endured waves of spirited smear campaigns aimed at weakening the party. 'Kerala has historically dismissed such false and malicious campaigns against Communists. The current controversy will be short-lived', he added.

Patna: The CPI(ML) on Sunday submitted a complaint to the Election Commission in Delhi, highlighting several anomalies it has initially identified in the draft electoral rolls under the special intensive revision (SIR) exercise. These discrepancies relate to electors in six assembly constituencies – Bhore, Barachatti, Tarari, Aurangabad, Digha and Jehanabad. The party alleged irregularities such as the non-inclusion of eligible voters, duplicate entries under the same EPIC number, names listed at multiple locations with minor variations, removal of valid voters and inclusion of deceased people. In Jehanabad town's Jafarganj locality alone, the names of over 200 Muslim electors were deleted, it alleged. In Digha, CPI(ML) listed 10 deceased people allegedly still present on the draft roll with names and serial numbers provided. In Bhore, the names of two living persons — Kudrat Khan and Shailesh Prasad — were said to be missing, though officials claimed their names were included under different EPIC numbers. The party questioned, "We want to know as to how could the EPIC number change? Are they the same electors, or different ones?" In Barachatti's booth 305, the same EPIC number was reportedly assigned to two different women, prompting the party to ask, "How can it be possible?" In Tarari, multiple entries under altered names for the same individuals were flagged, such as Vinay Kumar Tiwari being listed thrice using variations of his name. In Aurangabad, several voters were found to have been removed from their original serial numbers and re-entered elsewhere, the party said. 1 railway staffer killed, another seriously injured as Maoists carry out twin IED blasts on tracks in Jharkhand
A railway employee was killed and another seriously injured in an IED blast carried out allegedly by Maoists when a team was inspecting a site where an explosion had occurred earlier in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district early Sunday morning, an RPF official said. Confirming the incident, a railway official in Chakradharpur said the incident was part of a two-stage attack carried out by Maoists during the 'Shaheed Saptah' (Martyrs' Week), which was held from July 28 to August 3. 'The first IED explosion occurred early on Sunday, damaging a portion of the track. A second IED, likely planted nearby, exploded around 9.30 am as a patrol team was inspecting the affected section,' said a senior RPF official. The second blast took place between Karamapada and Rejda railway siding, under the Chakradharpur railway division, severely injuring two railway employees. 'Itwa Oraon, a keyman with the Railways, suffered critical leg injuries and was rushed to a hospital. He was declared dead on arrival. His colleague, Budhram Munda, sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment,' he said. The twin blasts forced authorities to suspend movement on the section of the tracks. An official said that train movement is expected to resume only after a full security clearance. The CPI (Maoist) has also called for a bandh (shutdown) on August 3 across six states, including Jharkhand, in remembrance of their fallen cadres. The district administration had issued alerts prior to the bandh, and security has been tightened in the region. An official said that additional forces from the CRPF and district police have been deployed as combing operations are underway. Adoor Gopalakrishnan courts controversy at Kerala Film Policy Conclave, Minister counters him
The closing ceremony of the Kerala Film Policy Conclave in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday witnessed some dramatic moments when veteran filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan made some controversial statements on the State government's project to promote filmmakers from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities and the one for women filmmakers, with Minister for Cultural Affairs Saji Cherian countering his assertions in his speech. 'The government is providing ₹1.5 crore for filmmakers from the SC/ST communities to make films. I told the Chief Minister that the government is paving the way for corruption through this, but nothing has changed. The intent behind the project is good, but they should be given at least three months of intensive training to make films. All the filmmakers who have made films under this project have complaints about it. They should be made aware that these are public funds. The amount should be reduced to ₹50 lakh. This money is not meant to make commercial films,' said Mr. Gopalakrishnan. Regarding a similar project for women filmmakers, he said that 'just because one is a woman, the government should not be giving money to make films.' They should also be provided training. They should know all the difficulties involved in making a film, he said. Mr. Cherian in his speech disagreed with Mr. Gopalakrishnan and said that even ₹1.5 crore was insufficient to make quality films these days, as most of the filmmakers under the project struggled due to funding issues. 'A rare opportunity' 'In the 98 years of Malayalam cinema's history, those from the SC/ST communities have not got a mainstream opportunity. This funding project is one of the best decisions this government has taken, because of which many new filmmakers from these communities were able to come forward. They were selected by a committee of experts through an intensive screening process,' he said. Mr. Gopalakrishnan's comments invited loud disapproval from a section of the audience, especially singer Pushpavathy. Later, speaking to the media, she said that Mr. Gopalakrishnan was attempting to torpedo a project to promote filmmakers from marginalised communities. 'People from the SC/ST communities have experienced oppression for centuries. Our forefathers have experienced slave-like conditions. It has just been decades since we started getting proper education. Any attempt to torpedo such projects has to be opposed. The government has clearly rejected his remarks,' she said. On IFFK Mr. Gopalakrishnan demanded that the delegate fee for the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) be raised to ensure that only those who were really interested in cinema got in. Recounting an event from the past, he said that 'a group of labourers from the Chala market barged into the theatre just to watch the adult content.' He also criticised the 2023 protest movement by the students of the K.R. Narayanan National Institute of Visual Science and Arts demanding the resignation of the institute's director Shankar Mohan for alleged caste discrimination, which also led to Mr. Gopalakrishnan's resignation as the institute's chairperson. He claimed that the institute was primed for take-off during his tenure, but no one knows the state of the institute now. Countering him, Mr. Cherian said that the institution was functioning effectively. The Minister also countered poet and filmmaker Sreekumaran Thampy's claim that nothing happened after the K. Hema Committee report was published. 'It is because the Hema committee report that this conclave is happening,' he said.
