The price of silver (XAG/USD) entered a consolidation phase on Wednesday morning, trading within a narrow range around $36.50 following a period of heightened volatility. However, sentiment quickly shifted after comments from the Chinese Vice Premier regarding ongoing trade negotiations with the United States in London. While the remarks were not overtly negative, they underscored the challenges ahead, reminding markets that a smooth path to a trade deal is far from guaranteed. The statement that China is 'not willing to fight but not afraid to fight' sparked renewed caution, triggering a sharp 1.4% drop in silver prices within just five minutes.
Silver XAG/USD daily chart & Gold/Silver ratio blue line:
Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
The daily chart reflects a potential technical reset after the recent bullish surge. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is flirting with a dip below 70, indicating that overbought conditions may be easing. Despite this, the prevailing trend remains upward in the absence of fresh geopolitical or economic frictions. A critical short-term catalyst will be the upcoming US Consumer Price Index (CPI) release, expected Wednesday afternoon. A softer-than-anticipated inflation reading could bolster expectations for more accommodative monetary policy, reigniting upward momentum in silver prices
Silver outshining gold:
Unlike gold, which is traditionally viewed as a safe haven, silver carries a dual identity—valued both as a precious metal and as a key industrial input. The recent rally to a 13-year high has been driven in part by optimism around improving US-China trade relations, reducing fears of a global recession and boosting risk appetite. Silver's role in industries such as solar energy, electronics, and electric vehicles strengthens its ties to global economic health, helping it outperform gold in recent weeks.
A notable indicator reflecting this trend is the gold-silver ratio, which has been declining—signalling silver's growing appeal relative to gold.
Supply deficit drives prices higher:
Approximately 70% of global silver supply is derived from mining, with only around 20% coming from recycled sources. Notably, pure silver mines contribute a relatively small share; much of the silver extracted is a byproduct of mining operations for other metals such as zinc, lead, copper, and gold. Consequently, silver production is heavily dependent on the fortunes of these markets.
The sector also faces a chronic underinvestment in mining exploration and development, partly due to increased regulatory hurdles. Simultaneously, infrastructure for recycling silver—particularly from electronic waste—remains underdeveloped, especially in the context of renewable energy applications.
This constrained supply environment is colliding with surging demand, particularly from the green technology sector. Silver plays an indispensable role in solar panel and electric vehicle production—segments expected to grow steadily in the coming years. With mining output lagging and inventories falling, silver is poised for a potential structural shortage, which should continue to push up prices.

Gold Shines Amid Rising Geopolitical Tensions and a Weaker Dollar

Waleed Farouk Gold prices surged in both local and global markets on Thursday, fueled by increased demand for the yellow metal as a safe haven amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel and a weakening U.S. dollar. Investors are also closely watching for new signals on the future path of U.S. monetary policy. In Egypt's local market, gold prices jumped by EGP 55, with the price of 21-karat gold reaching EGP 4,720, up from EGP 4,665 at the start of yesterday's trading. Meanwhile, the global spot price of gold rose by $27 per ounce, climbing to $3,380. This increase was reflected across all karat levels: 24K gold recorded EGP 5,394, 18K at EGP 4,046, and 14K at EGP 3,147. The gold pound (8g of 21K) reached EGP 37,760. This upward movement comes as markets remain on edge. Reports, including one from NBC News, indicate that Israel is considering a potential military strike against Iran. This heightened geopolitical risk has driven investors toward gold as a hedge against uncertainty. Additional tension was fueled by comments from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened new tariffs — adding to the pressure on the global economic outlook and further supporting gold's rally. Gold also benefited from a noticeable decline in the U.S. dollar following the release of inflation data, which showed a modest slowdown in consumer price growth. This has increased speculation that the Federal Reserve may have room to cut interest rates later this year. U.S. consumer price index (CPI) data showed that annual inflation rose to 2.4% in May, in line with market expectations, while core inflation — which excludes volatile food and energy prices — held steady at 2.8%. Analysts interpreted this as a sign that inflationary pressures are easing, supporting the position of Federal Reserve members advocating for a more accommodative monetary policy. Markets are now awaiting the release of the U.S. Producer Price Index (PPI) later today. Forecasts suggest the annual PPI may rise by 2.6% in May, compared to 2.4% in April, with the core rate expected to remain unchanged at 3.1%. These figures will be critical in shaping expectations ahead of the Fed's next policy meeting, scheduled for June 17–18. On the European front, the European Central Bank released its annual report on the euro, noting that central banks' gold reserves have reached approximately 36,000 tonnes — near pre-Bretton Woods levels. This indicates a continued trend among central banks to bolster their gold holdings, lending support to price stability in the near term. Against this backdrop, gold remains underpinned by a confluence of supportive factors: rising geopolitical risks, a weaker dollar, and growing expectations of a 50-basis-point interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve before year-end — all reinforcing a bullish outlook for the yellow metal in the coming period. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean News 3 Killed in Shooting Attack in Thailand

Stocks, dollar retreat on new Trump trade threat - Economy

Stock markets and the dollar retreated Thursday after US President Donald Trump threatened higher unilateral tariffs on partners in the coming weeks, reigniting trade war fears. His comments overshadowed any optimism that came from the United States and China reaching a deal this week to dial down tensions. The dollar slumped one percent against the euro, while oil prices slid on profit-taking, after having surged Wednesday. Geopolitical concerns were also weighing on sentiment after Trump said US personnel were being moved from the Middle East, as nuclear talks with Iran faltered and fears of a regional conflict grew. Asia's main stock markets mostly closed down, while eurozone indices led losses in Europe. On the corporate front, shares in British carrier easyJet and British Airways owner IAG fell almost four percent, following news that a London-bound Air India plane -- a Boeing 787 -- had crashed in Ahmedabad. Ahead of Wall Street reopening, Boeing said it was "working to gather more information". Markets were firmly focused on Trump's latest move over tariffs. "Mainland European markets are being hit hard... amid growing concerns that we could soon see the trade war break out once again," said Joshua Mahoney, chief market analyst at broker Rostro. Trump shook confidence on Wednesday by saying he would soon send letters telling governments what levies Washington would be imposing. "We're going to be sending letters out in about a week and a half, two weeks, to countries, telling them what the deal is," he told reporters. "This is the deal, you can take it or leave it," he added. The US had paused until July 9 reciprocal levies imposed on many trading partners at the start of April, to allow countries to cut deals with the White House. This had sparked a relief rally for stocks. But Trump's latest comments revived fears about sky-high levies and the impact on the economy. Trump has already threatened 50-percent levies on the EU once the July 9 deadline passes. Outside the eurozone, London managed to limit losses even as official data showed the UK economy shrank more than expected in April, as tariffs kicked in. Trump's renewed threat to hammer trading partners' exports came not long after US and China reached a tentative deal that would increase Chinese exports of rare earths while allowing Chinese students to remain in American universities. Wall Street struggled on Wednesday as trade worries overshadowed another below-forecast inflation reading that provided fresh speculation the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates. Oil prices slid 1.5 percent Thursday, having surged Wednesday when Trump said US personnel were being moved from the potentially "dangerous" Middle East as Iran nuclear talks stutter. The move came as US reports suggested Israel could be preparing to strike targets in Iran, and as Tehran threatened to target US military bases in the region if a regional conflict broke out. Trump, who had recently expressed optimism about the talks with Iran, said in an interview published Wednesday that he was "less confident". - Key figures at around 1050 GMT - London - FTSE 100: DOWN 0.1 percent at 8,851.96 points Paris - CAC 40: DOWN 0.7 percent at 7,723.01 Frankfurt - DAX: DOWN 1.0 percent at 23,709.01 Tokyo - Nikkei 225: DOWN 0.7 percent at 38,173.09 (close) Hong Kong - Hang Seng Index: DOWN 1.4 percent at 24,035.38 (close) Shanghai - Composite: FLAT at 3,402.66 (close) New York - Dow: FLAT at 42,865.77 (close) Euro/dollar: UP at $1.1596 from $1.1489 on Wednesday Pound/dollar: UP at $1.3591 from $1.3545 Dollar/yen: DOWN at 143.54 yen from 144.62 yen Euro/pound: UP at 85.35 pence from 84.79 pence West Texas Intermediate: DOWN 1.5 percent at $67.13 per barrel Brent North Sea Crude: DOWN 1.5 percent at $68.75 per barrel dan-ajb/bcp/rmb IAG - INTERNATIONAL CONSOLIDATED AIRLINES GROUP Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
