‘How To Train Your Dragon' flies high again: Director, star on pressure, puppets and bringing Toothless to life
The fantasy adventure, which has grossed US$560 million (RM2.4 billion) worldwide since its release in June, came out some 15 years after the DreamWorks animation, which DeBlois co-wrote and co-directed. DeBlois also directed the two subsequent animations.
Staying loyal to the original, the live-action follows kind-hearted young Viking Hiccup, played by Mason Thames, who secretly befriends a dragon he names Toothless.
In an interview with Reuters ahead of the film's release on digital platforms on Tuesday, which includes behind-the-scenes vignettes, DeBlois and Thames spoke about bringing the animation to life.
Below are excerpts edited for length and clarity.
Q: What was it like revisiting this world and bringing it to life?
DeBlois: 'It was certainly a fun challenge to take a story that I had basically put to bed after spending a decade of my life on it and to sort of dive back into the world but through the live action lens, which meant we could present a ... very grounded, a very credible version of this world. And that meant being able to scout locations in Iceland and the Faroe Islands and Scotland to start to design and build actual sets ... where we could walk around and touch things.'
Q: What was it like stepping into the franchise?
Thames: 'It was very daunting and slightly terrifying because ... so many people care about this world and these characters ... I really wanted to do Hiccup as a character justice ... and finding my version was a lot of fun.'
Q: How did you bring to life some of the animation's famous scenes, like Forbidden Friendship and Test Flight?
DeBlois on Forbidden Friendship: 'Our solution was to give Mason a dragon and we did so by creating foam versions of Toothless ... that would be puppeteered by Tom Wilton ... And so they worked out the choreography, the drawing in the sand, the sort of stepping around lines and coming to touch for the first time in this beautiful way set to John Powell's music.'
Thames on Test Flight: 'It's just me on ... a giant mechanical bull with wind machines in my face ... I had the music playing in the background, which was really cool.'
Q: Given the film's success, how do you feel going into the sequel?
DeBlois: 'I feel relieved that the movie is being embraced, that audiences are showing up and they're definitely demonstrating that there's still an appetite for this world and these characters. And I also feel the pressure to deliver at the highest level we can ... No instalment of How to Train Your Dragon should feel like a disappointment that stains the franchise. So I always feel that pressure, for sure.' — Reuters

Tattooed in glory: Lucy Bronze ink a hit after England's Euro 2025 penalty shootout win over Sweden
BASEL, July 27 — England defender Lucy Bronze has been in high demand at Honey Studio London since she smashed home what turned out to be the winning penalty in the Lionesses' nail-biting quarter-final shootout victory over Sweden at Euro 2025 last week. Grace Mills, a hand poke tattoo artist who works out of Honey Studio, estimates she has done a half dozen tattoos of the veteran England player in her number two shirt, pumping her fists in celebration, since that memorable night. With England set to face world champions Spain in the final on today in Basel, Mills said — win or lose — her books are filling up for more Lionesses tattoos next week. 'Football, especially women's football, really celebrates community and people's different ways of showing their style, whether it be fashion or tattoos, and celebrating community through individualism,' Mills told Reuters. 'And so, I think it's a really big crossover between people who love football and also love tattoos.' The Australian, herself a 'massive football fan', has also done tattoos in commemoration of Arsenal winning the women's Champions League earlier this year and England's victory at the 2022 Euros. 'I just always loved designing tattoos that are around things people are super passionate about, and designing them in a way where people who want something a bit more simple or subtle or more feminine, and celebrate sport as well,' she said. Mills' Euro 2025 tattoos are in collaboration with the Lionesses and creative agency This Fan Girl. An England supporter made headlines after he got an early 'Euro 2024 Winners' tattoo before the men's final last year. England ended up losing to Spain. — Reuters

Wax lyrical: Taylor Swift gets lucky 13 Madame Tussauds statues
LONDON, July 24 — US pop megastar Taylor Swift will be honoured with 13 waxworks of her at Madame Tussauds venues around the globe, the museum said yesterday. In honour of Swift's lucky number, 13 of the waxwork museum's 22 branches will each receive a statue of the 'Love Story' and 'Blank Space' singer, in what it called the 'most ambitious project' of its 250-year history. The statues were inspired by some of the 35-year-old songwriting sensation's looks from her record-shattering 'Eras Tour' from 2023 to 2024. With 149 shows across the world over nearly two years, the tour raked in US$2 billion, making it the most lucrative in music history to date. More than 40 artists worked for more than a year on the statues of Swift, one of the most acclaimed artists of her generation with 14 Grammy Awards. 'This is the most ambitious project in Madame Tussauds' 250-year history, which only feels right to reflect the stratospheric status of Taylor Swift,' said Danielle Cullen, the museum's senior figure stylist. UK-based Swifties are well served, with one waxwork slated for London and another for the northern seaside resort town of Blackpool. Another 10 will find a permanent home at the branches of Madame Tussauds in Amsterdam, Berlin, Budapest, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, Nashville, New York, Orlando and Sydney. The thirteenth statue, which will travel around the remaining museums, will begin its worldwide walkabout with a residency at Madame Tussauds Shanghai. — AFP

‘Brat bride' era begins: Charli XCX marries The 1975's George Daniel in low-key London ceremony (VIDEO)
LONDON, July 20 — Pop provocateur Charli XCX has confirmed she's tied the knot with George Daniel, drummer of British band The 1975. The couple were spotted outside Hackney Town Hall in London yesterday, with Charli in an off-the-shoulder white dress and her trademark wraparound sunglasses, while Daniel cut a sleek figure in a suit and tie. The scene looked every bit like a wedding — and TikTok was quick to pick up on it. As fans buzzed over the unconfirmed nuptials, Charli posted a cheeky TikTok of herself strutting away from the camera, deadpan and seemingly unimpressed, with the caption: 'When George isn't crying when he sees me walking down the aisle.' But she quickly reassured her followers with a follow-up caption: 'Luckily he did xx.' According to BBC, the viral video — now with over seven million views — served as her digital announcement. Another post featuring Daniel wearing her veil only added to the 'bridal party energy', as Charli herself put it. The pair's ceremony appeared to be an intimate affair, but the moment still felt quintessentially Charli: stylish, ironic, and completely online. As one commenter wrote: 'Brat girl summer just turned into brat wife era.' Their romance, which began publicly a few years ago, has also been a musical collaboration. Daniel co-produced and co-wrote two tracks on Brat, the critically acclaimed 2024 album that saw Charli's bratty club-pop aesthetic dominate TikTok and catapult her to a headline slot at Glastonbury. They first worked together on the 2021 single Spinning, and Daniel even made a cameo during her tour via the viral 'Apple dance' video that played to thousands of screaming fans. Daniel, best known for his work in The 1975 alongside frontman Matty Healy, has also been exploring solo material in recent years. But the band hasn't always stayed in the spotlight for their music. The 1975 faced backlash in 2023 when Healy kissed Daniel onstage at the Good Vibes Festival in Sepang, just before launching into a rant criticising Malaysia's anti-LGBTQ+ laws. The group's performance was cut short, and the episode triggered the cancellation of the entire event.
