Scott McTominay shares true feelings on Man Utd as 'mistake' slammed
Scott McTominay claims he wants nothing but success for Manchester United after his exit was slammed as a mistake. The Scottish midfielder was sold by the Red Devils last summer as he completed a £25m move to Italian giants Napoli.
His exit brought to an end a two-decade association with the club having progressed through their academy to make over 250 first-team appearances. McTominay 's sale was thought to have been a boost to United's PSR calculations given any fee they received would have represented pure profit.
Despite the circumstances of his departure, McTominay has said that he does not harbour any ill feelings towards his former club. He said: 'I always want the absolute best for Manchester United. It's been my life for 22, 23 years so for me, I wish the club all the success in the world.
'I'm with them every step of the way. I want them to do well. I'm not someone who doesn't want that.'
McTominay ended up enjoying a dream debut season in Naples having played a key role in Napoli's Serie A title success. He made 36 appearances in all competitions, scoring 13 goals.
While the move was certainly a success from McTominay's point of view, some were not particularly convinced that the decision to sell him was the correct one. Former United coach Benni McCarthy recently slammed his exit.
He said: 'There are different reasons why you sell homegrown players sometimes. When they go, the profit lets you sign more players. Having said that, it was one of the biggest mistakes in football to let him leave.
'He was born to play for United. Maybe he wasn't the most technical, but he had fight, and I think it's what they will get back with Matheus Cunha.

'Scotty was a player that you look for in a dressing room to get you where you want to be. To let him go for what was a small transfer fee was a big shame. I think everyone at the club regrets that decision.
'For me, with my experience, I know what you need to deliver at a special club. People can say what they like but we tried to bring in great players that would fit. I know the manager always takes the blame, but sometimes the club needs to look at itself.'
Ex-United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also a vocal critic of McTominay's sale. Speaking to the BBC, he said: "Scott and Fred together, they were lads you would put your hat on every day to give 100%. How you can sell Scott is beyond me."

Hearts boss Derek McInnes reveals transfer latest as two more signings expected at Tynecastle next week
DEREK MCINNES savoured victory on his Tynecastle bow and confirmed he expects two more new faces in next week. Burkina Faso frontman Pierre Landry Kabore, 24, has been lined up from Estonian outfit JK Narva Trans while Albanian winger Sabah Kerjota, 23, has agreed to join from Italian lower league team US Sambenedettese. 4 12.07.2025 Hearts v Dunfermline Athletic, Premier Sports Cup Group E ………………………. 'But we're quite far down the line with a couple. 'I think we're confident we'll get them done.' Lawrence Shankland netted two penalties with Jamie Wilson and sub Stephen Kingsley also on the mark. McInnes added: 'You've seen some of the results today with some of the Premier League teams. It's not straightforward. 'I think for us, we asked for a strong start, which we got. 'Then the one real opportunity Dunfermline had, they score from it. It set us back, it set the crowd back. 'At half time we settled the boys down a bit. 'It was on us to do more. 'I didn't think we were going to lose the game, but I wasn't convinced we were going to win it. Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes gives the inside story of his management career in part 1 of exclusive interview 'The result flattered us, it was harsh on Dunfermline. 'It's clear we've still got work to do." On kid Wilson's goal and potential, McInnes said: 'He excites me. He's very intelligent for someone so young. 'He's only going to get better. 'He needs to learn how to use his body better, but he's still a lot stronger and more robust than I thought he was. He's had as good a pre-season as anybody.' 4 Dunfermline boss Neil Lennon Credit: Alamy Meanwhile, Pars boss Neil Lennon took positives from the defeat but also highlighted the margin of defeat was also self inflicted. Lennon - who blooded John Tod, 18, son of former Pars hero Andrew - said: 'When you make individual mistakes, then no, it's not a harsh result. 'I didn't think we started the game well at all. We looked a little bit spooked and conceded early. 'Then we grew into the game. 'Individual errors cost us. I don't know if it's lack of experience or fatigue. 'But the game was in the balance for long, long periods. 'You can just see that we need a little bit of strength in depth. 'But, yes, there's a lot of positive signs there for me today. 'I'm really pleased overall. I don't like losing, obviously, and I don't like losing heavily. 'But it's two penalties and a set play. The fourth goal is academic. 'I hope the fans can see a glimpse of what we're trying to bring. "I need to add to the squad in important areas and that's what we're intending to do. 'In another two or three weeks' time, we'll be better. 'And I think we'll be an exciting prospect for the Championship. 'I enjoyed being back at Tynecastle - the atmosphere and the occasion was immaculate.' Man Utd star's agent holds Carrington talks after injury blow rocks Ruben Amorim
Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir remains Ruben Amorim's second-choice shot-stopper behind under-fire No.1 Andre Onana Altay Bayindir's agent has been at Carrington this week to discuss his client's Manchester United future. The Turk, signed from Fenerbahce for £4.3million, has played second fiddle to Andre Onana since arriving at Old Trafford in September 2023. Bayindir has not featured for the Turkey national team since a 3-0 defeat to Portugal at Euro 2024 and his representative Sefa Seyrek has been keen to understand the shot-stopper's role for the forthcoming season. United are now flirting with the idea of signing a new goalkeeper following Onana's hamstring injury that's expected to prevent him from featuring on the club's pre-season tour of the United States. Botafogo's John Victor is one of several names currently under consideration. Despite Onana's calamitous form, Bayindir only made 10 appearances in all competitions last term and was not given a fair crack at replacing the Cameroonian as Ruben Amorim's No.1. READ MORE: Man Utd bank millions from sell-on fees including £7.2m for star who never played a game The 27-year-old, who reported for pre-season training on Thursday, also snubbed multiple offers from Europe to stay with the Red Devils in January, however, there have been fresh enquiries about his situation in recent weeks. While it's understood United would likely have considered respectable bids for Onana this summer, they're currently prioritising improving their options at the top end of the pitch where marquee additions are concerned. Third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton penned a fresh one-year contract extension last month and the Red Devils were believed to be satisfied with their options in reserve between the sticks - prior to Onana's muscle injury sustained in training. Onana wants to remain at Old Trafford and prove his worth but last month, he refused to provide any assurances he'd be with the club next season. His injury now makes any imminent exit unlikely. He said during a brief interview while on his holidays: "Will I leave? I don't know, we'll see!" Reacting to Onana's eight-word statement, ex-United goalkeeping great Edwin van der Sar claimed that in his view, the position was not a burning issue for Amorim. Van der Sar, who worked with the Cameroonian at Ajax, said of Onana: "He has great strengths. He's athletic. He has good reaction saves. Good with his feet and everything. I'm sure he's going to get over it. "Sometimes it's not easy. Sometimes your performances or the pressure there is. But I've seen him play for Ajax, for Inter, Champions League finals. I'm sure he's going to be fine for next season. "I think there are more areas where United should see if you can have a better player, a different player. But I don't think the goalkeeping situation needs to be addressed now."
