Broncos are confident as they start camp but contract questions hang over sutton, bonitto and allen

Al Arabiya6 days ago
The Denver Broncos returned from summer vacation Tuesday without the baggage they schlepped into training camp for most of the last decade. They're coming off a season in which they ended their protracted playoff drought, halted their long skid of losing campaigns, and most important, identified their first franchise quarterback — Bo Nix — since Hall of Famer Peyton Manning was still slinging footballs. The only player starting training camp on the physically unable to perform list is wide receiver A.T. Perry (ankle).
That's not to say there aren't any storm clouds brewing over the Rocky Mountains as colossal contracts loom for wide receiver Courtland Sutton, linebacker Nik Bonitto, and defensive end Zach Allen. The first of their ramp-up workouts is on Wednesday, and all eyes will be on that trio to see if anyone will skip practices while awaiting a new deal. At his football camp for kids over the weekend, Bonitto said contract talks between his agent and Broncos general manager George Paton are happening right now, 'but I kind of just stay out of it. My focus is just winning and trying to get a championship.' Bonitto said he had no deadline to get a deal done either, stressing, 'I know these things can happen tomorrow or happen months from now.'

Fellow elite edge rushers have cashed in of late. T.J. Watt's three-year deal averages $41 million, Myles Garrett's four-year $160 million contract includes $123 million guaranteed, and Nick Bosa's contract has a total value of $170 million. The next wave of younger edge rushers about to reset the market include Cowboys star Micah Parsons, Detroit defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, and the 25-year-old Bonitto, who had 13 1/2 sacks in a breakout 2024 season, helping Denver lead the league with a franchise-best 63 QB takedowns. 'Yeah, I mean, the edge market is kind of crazy right now knowing that everybody's getting these big deals and it's only getting bigger and bigger,' Bonitto said. 'Luckily for me, I'm in a good position right now where the market's kind of in my favor.'
Sutton, who has 18 touchdown catches over the last two years, is due to make $14 million in 2025, the final year of his four-year $60.8 million deal. Like Bonitto, Allen is coming off a career year, and he's due to make $12.7 million this season, the final year of a three-year $46 million deal.
Optimism is well sky high in the Mile High City after Nix's successful rookie season, which was followed by an offseason that featured free agent additions Talanoa Hufanga and Dre Greenlaw. Right tackle Mike McGlinchey played with the duo in San Francisco and is excited for their reunion in Denver. 'I think Huff and Dre are two of the best at their positions across the league, and they're monstrous additions for us defensively,' McGlinchey said. 'Those two are going to help us tremendously this year, and I'm happy to be back on the same side as them.'
The Broncos also selected Texas cornerback Jahdae Barron, the 2024 Jim Thorpe Award winner, in the first round of the draft, followed by UCF running back RJ Harvey in Round 2. Harvey will pair with free agent pickup J.K. Dobbins in the Broncos revamped backfield.
The Broncos are coming off a 10-7 season that ended with a wild-card playoff loss at Buffalo, but McGlinchey laughed when asked if the Broncos saw themselves as championship contenders even though Kansas City has won the AFC West every year since 2016. 'We haven't even practiced yet,' McGlinchey said. 'We certainly feel like we could be, but we have to put in the work day in and day out. We're obviously very excited about what we have here. Everybody feels a little bit more comfortable with the experience we gained last year with the year that we had and knowing that's still not good enough.'
Denver's defense was already elite in 2024 when cornerback Patrick Surtain II won the Defensive Player of the Year award, and the additions figure to make the Broncos even better in 2025, taking more pressure off of Nix and helping him avoid the second-year pitfalls that bedevil so many quarterbacks. 'Bo, he's even more confident going into this year,' Surtain said. 'Obviously with Year 1 under his belt, a lot more confidence rises upon that. The team we have, Bo's back the whole way through. He's a tremendous leader out there and a tremendous player. This year he's going to make a lot of noise.'

Rays trade catcher Danny Jansen to his hometown Brewers for minor league infielder

Veteran catcher Danny Jansen was traded by the Tampa Bay Rays to his hometown Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night for minor league infielder Jadher Areinamo. Jansen was in Tampa Bay's original lineup against the New York Yankees but was pulled about 45 minutes before the first pitch. The trade was announced shortly after the Rays ended a four-game losing streak with a 4-2 win at Yankee Stadium. Jansen said he found out about the deal after meeting with manager Kevin Cash and president of baseball operations Erik Neander. 'I was getting ready to play the game and I understand that side of baseball,' Jansen said. 'Just grateful for the time spent here with the guys.' The Rays signed Jansen to an $8.5 million one-year contract on Dec. 13. He batted .204 with 11 homers and 29 RBIs in 73 games for the Rays. Jansen grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin. He is joining the NL Central leaders to serve as a backup to William Conteras, who is playing through a fractured finger. Conteras is hitting .245 with six homers and 42 RBIs in 100 games. 'I don't live too far,' Jansen said. 'That's going to be something that my wife and I had never experienced.' Jansen was moved right around the MLB trade deadline for the second straight season. Toronto dealt him to Boston on July 24, 2024, and he wound up playing for both teams in a game at Fenway Park that got suspended June 26 and resumed two months later. 'Having gone through a trade last year will probably make this process a little bit easier for me going into a team as a catcher learning pitchers and all that,' Jansen said. 'So looking forward to the challenge and task at hand with that. I think having a little bit of experience helps.' Areinamo batted .297 with 11 homers and 51 RBIs in 94 games for Class A Wisconsin of the Midwest League and has appeared at third base, shortstop, and second base. Last season he hit .301 in 110 games for Wisconsin. The Rays are 8-18 in their last 26 games following a 25-9 stretch from May 20 to June 26. Tampa Bay is 2 1/2 games back of the final wild-card spot in the American League.

Reds rookie Chase Burns achieves strikeout milestones, but still seeks first big-league win

Chase Burns has reached some elite company in his first six starts in the majors. However, the Reds rookie right-hander is still seeking his first big-league win. Burns became the second Cincinnati pitcher since 1900 with three straight games with at least 10 strikeouts on Monday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, he also allowed three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings as the Dodgers posted a 5-2 victory. 'I feel like every start I'm kind of learning and getting better,' said Burns, who is 0-3 with a 6.26 ERA. 'I mean, the numbers don't show, but you know it's been really fun to go through the process and learn.' Burns — who had 10 strikeouts against the Dodgers — joined Raisel Iglesias as the only Reds pitchers with three straight double-digit strikeout outings. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Burns is the eighth Major Leaguer age 22 or younger and the first since Pittsburgh's Oliver Perez in 2004 to post three straight 10-strikeout games since the mound was moved to its current distance in 1893. He's also the seventh rookie to do it in three straight games and the fifth big leaguer to have at least 10 punchouts in three of his first six games. 'We're trying to build for the future with him and win now with him. I think the kid is doing a good job,' Reds manager Terry Francona said. Burns — the second overall pick in the 2024 MLB amateur draft — has faced some of the toughest lineups in the majors since being called up in late June. Two of his six starts have come against last year's World Series participants. His debut was against the Yankees on June 24, and he faced the defending champion Dodgers on Monday night. Burns' second start was at Fenway Park in Boston as the Red Sox jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning. The 22-year old went only one-third of an inning and allowed seven runs (five earned) on five hits. 'Yeah, it's why I play the game, dream about playing (and) facing these guys like that, going against a lineup like that. So I'm having a lot of fun,' Burns said. 'I'm blessed to be up here, and I just want to keep learning and get better.' The one thing the Reds could help Burns with is run support. They have plated only four runs when he has been on the mound in his starts, and in only one of his outings has he left with Cincinnati in the lead. 'You don't have time to sit up here and learn slow, honestly,' Burns said. 'The boys want to playoff push, and I want to be a part of that, so I got to go out there and perform.' Despite the record, Francona doesn't see any frustration from Burns. 'I think he's fine. He's a very mature kid or he wouldn't be here,' Francona said. It doesn't get easier for Burns. His next start is likely to be Saturday against the Atlanta Braves in the MLB Speedway Classic at Tennessee's Bristol Motor Speedway, where more than 85,000 tickets have been sold. The major league attendance record is 84,587 at old Cleveland Stadium on Sept. 12, 1954, when Cleveland faced the New York Yankees. Burns played two seasons at the University of Tennessee and went to high school in Hendersonville, Tennessee, at Beech High School.

Cardinals' Andre Pallante takes a no-hit bid into the 6th inning vs. Marlins

ST. LOUIS (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Andre Pallante didn't change his approach even though he knew what was brewing as the innings rolled by without a hit by the Miami Marlins on Monday night. 'Just trying to execute the next pitch I'm throwing and trying to be better at doing my process in between innings,' Pallante said. 'You know, like when I come inside, cool down a little bit, hydrate, read my report, make sure I'm (ready) for the next competitor I'm facing.' Graham Pauley broke up Pallante's no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the sixth, and that was the only hit the 26-year-old allowed in seven innings as the Cardinals beat the Marlins 7-1. Pallante (6-7) retired the first 10 batters before walking Jesús Sánchez in the fourth. Pallante struck out four, walked one, and threw 49 of his 81 pitches for strikes. Sánchez and Pauley were the only Marlins to reach base against him. 'I know, like, their tendencies, you know, you have the scouting reports, you know what they like to do,' Pallante said. 'I just knew that if I commit and execute the pitch I'm throwing, I'll get good results.' The five-plus innings matched Pallante's longest hitless start to a game, the other coming against Cleveland on Sept. 22, 2024. It was the longest hitless start by a Cardinals starter since Erick Fedde went six innings at Pittsburgh on April 9. 'He did a really nice job with just quick outs,' Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said. 'He was very efficient. Also got some very defensive swings, a lot of soft contact. To be able to go seven, I feel like he navigated that lineup extremely well.' The effort matched a one hit, seven-inning shutout performance at Pittsburgh on July 1 in which Pallante took a no-decision in a 1-0 loss. Pallante had gone 0-3 with a 9.76 ERA in his three starts since then, giving up eight or more hits each time. 'Had some hard-hit balls at guys, you know, like, that's just part of the kind of evening out over what feels like the past couple weeks,' Pallante said. 'But, like, just stay on the attack, command the inside part of the plate.' Alec Burleson and Masyn Winn provided all the offense Pallante needed. Burleson homered and drove in two, and Winn broke it open with a bases-loaded double to highlight a five-run seventh. Pallante admitted there was a nervous moment on a flyout to Iván Herrera in the second. Herrera, who played the outfield for the first time as a professional after spending the majority of the season as the Cardinals' designated hitter, made the play on his only chance of the game. 'He kind of scared me a little bit,' Pallante said. 'He ran straight to the fence. I'm like, 'Oh man, is that, like, 30 rows deep?' But then he came in on it, so I'm like, 'Oh, thank goodness.' But I was a little worried, but he did a good job.'
