NSA Ajit Doval In Moscow For Key Talks, Signals Strategic Autonomy Amid Trump's Tariffs
National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval has reached Moscow for a high-stakes visit amid escalating global tensions, with top government sources calling the trip 'crucial for India's strategic positioning." According to the sources, Doval is expected to hold high-level meetings with senior Russian leadership, including his counterpart Nikolai Patrushev.
Top government sources told CNN-News18 that Doval's visit underlines India's resolve to 'explore all options in the national interest," especially at a time when geopolitical fault lines between the US-China and Ukraine-Russia blocs continue to widen and amid tariffs on Indian exports imposed by US President Donald Trump over Indi buying Russian oil. 'The timing of this visit sends a clear message to the US and the European Union — India is an independent power and will pursue its national interests first," said a senior source.
This visit, according to top officials, reaffirms New Delhi's commitment to a multipolar world order — a policy it has consistently maintained without compromising on core interests. Doval's engagements will reportedly touch upon sensitive issues, including ensuring uninterrupted defence procurements from Russia. 'India will focus on maintaining the supply of spare parts and upgrades for its Russian-origin military platforms," a source added.
Energy security is also expected to be high on the agenda. With Western sanctions complicating financial transactions, sources indicated that India and Russia will explore long-term oil deals, along with 'some adjustments" to the rupee-ruble payment mechanism to bypass hurdles.
The visit reflects India's intent to maintain strategic autonomy, even as it deepens ties with Western powers. 'Doval's presence in Moscow demonstrates our intent to preserve a strategic axis amid global realignments," a top government source said.
While the full schedule remains undisclosed, sources said the tone and outcomes of this visit will have long-term implications for India's security and economic frameworks.

India's Operation Sindoor India launched Operation Sindoor in the early hours of May 7 when the military hit nine terror camps inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), killing more than 100 terrorists. It was New Delhi's direct military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror strike that killed 26 people. The operation triggered four days of strikes and counterstrikes with drones, missiles and long-range weapons before the two sides reached an understanding on stopping all military action on May 10.

Airports have increased from 74 to more than 160, and national waterways have expanded from 3 to 30. 'Till 2014, there were 7 All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and 387 medical colleges. It has now gone up to 22 AIIMS and 704 medical colleges, that are serving the people,' he said. Modi said the lives of the poor and marginalised are transforming alongside India's rapid progress. 'Before 2014 the total export was USD 468 billion but today it is USD 824 billion. We used to import mobile phones but now we are the top five exporters of mobile handsets. Our electronic export before 2014 was USD 6 billion which has gone up to USD 38 billion,' he said. India's automobile exports have also more than doubled, making it the fourth-largest automobile exporter globally. 'These achievements give strength to our concept of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
