Amarnath Yatra duration reduced to 38 days in 2025, security beefed up
Heightened security amid upcoming events
Security arrangements in Jammu and Kashmir have been intensified in light of the upcoming Eid-Ul-Adha, Amarnath Yatra, and other key events.
Earlier this week, Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat directed forces to deploy anti-sabotage teams along the yatra routes and strengthen risk mitigation strategies.
A police spokesperson said the DGP convened a joint meeting with officers from the police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to review preparations.
SOPs and vigilance stressed
During the review, the DGP emphasised the strict enforcement of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and called for proactive security measures to safeguard pilgrims. He also urged field officers to intensify efforts to dismantle terror networks in the region.
These instructions follow a high-level meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Jammu to assess security arrangements for the pilgrimage.
The meeting focused on evaluating threat levels, deployment plans, and improving coordination between security forces, intelligence agencies, and civil administration. Shah underscored the importance of real-time intelligence sharing and maintaining high vigilance to ensure peace and stability throughout the pilgrimage period.

Two mechanised boats attacked; over ₹35 lakh-worth seer fish stolen
In a mid-sea attack on two mechanised boats from Tharuvaikulam in Thoothukudi district, high sea robbers stole over 3.50 tonnes of premium seer or king fishes, popularly known as 'vanjiram' worth more than ₹35 lakh, off Kanniyakumari coast on Saturday morning. When mechanised boat 'George 4' of Tharuvaikulam was returning to its base with 10 crew and driver Charles after week-long stay fishing in the high seas, the robbers, who had come in 15 fibre glass boats, intercepted the mechanised boat in the guise of fishermen even as the larger vessel was beyond 10 nautical miles off Kanniyakumari coast. As the sea was rough at that time, the robbers could easily stop the slowly moving mechanised boat, boarded the vessel with weapons and assaulted Mr. Charles first in a bid to halt the boat, police said. 'The robbers, who were carrying lethal weapons like machetes, swords and knives, threatened everyone in our boat. They seized our mobile phones and assaulted us. After thrashing us for a few minutes, they looted our priceless catches, all premium 'seela' or 'vanjiram' (seer or king fish). They looted over 3 tonnes of seer fish from our cold storage and loaded the booty in their fibre glass boats before fleeing. We immediately alerted our boat owner Michael George about the robbery,' said Mr. Charles. When the robbers were returning to the shore, they targeted another mechnaised boat 'Geraldon', also from Tharuvaikulam, from which they looted ₹5 lakh worth fishes, mostly seer fish. 'The second boat, which was actually going from Tharuvaikulam for multi-day deep sea stay, was targeted by the robbers after this boat had just completed their first harvest in high seas. In all, the robbers looted over ₹35 lakh-worth premium fishes from two mechanised boats of Tharuvaikulam. We've informed the Tharuvaikulam marine police and Tharuvaikulam police for appropriate action and to recover the booty from the robbers,' he said. Sources in the Fisheries Department said the liner hooks of the fibre glass country boat fishermen released in the high seas beyond 10 nautical miles got entangled in the propeller of these mechanised boats and hence the fishermen had attacked the boats and looted the fishes. Superintendent of Police, Kanniyakumari, R. Stalin said he had instructed the Inspector of Police, Kanniyakumari to visit Chinna Muttom and Kanniyakumari and to take appropriate action based on his findings. A peace meeting was conducted in the evening with both sides and the issue has been 'amicable sorted out', the SP informed.

Punjab Police conducted raids at 301 locations; arrests 38 drug smugglers
Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], August 16 (ANI): Continuing the war against drugs 'Yudh Nashian Virudh" waged by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to eradicate drug menace from state consecutively for the 168th day, Punjab Police conducted raids at 301 locations on Saturday leading to the arrest of 38 drug smugglers after registration of 28 first information reports (FIRs) across the state. With this, the number of total drug smugglers arrested has reached 25,909 in 168 days, said an official release. Delhi top cop suspends 8 officers over absence during Janmashtami duty
Eight police officers, including an inspector-rank officer from Northwest Delhi's Shahbad Dairy police station, were suspended after they were found absent from duty near an ISKCON temple in the area during Delhi Police Commissioner SBK Singh's visit on Saturday. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer-North) Hareshwar Swami confirmed the development. According to officers, the Delhi Police Commissioner conducted a ground-level inspection in various parts of the Capital on Saturday. The police had stepped up security arrangements outside several temples and prominent markets across the city amid celebrations for Janmashtami. In the morning, when the Police Commissioner arrived at the ISKCON temple in the Shahbad Dairy area, it was found that the personnel assigned to Gate Number 2 were not present, said officers. The Police Commissioner, officers said, immediately instructed the District Police Head to take the matter seriously and ordered the suspension of the responsible officers. 'As of now, eight personnel have been found missing, after which the suspension orders were issued. A departmental inquiry has also been initiated to determine if more personnel were absent,' a senior police officer said. Singh has instructed all the Special CPs that show-cause notices should be issued to concerned ACP (sub-division) and district DCPs for not keeping proper supervision of their staff. He also directed them to make an adverse entry in this regard in the annual performance appraisal report of concerned ACP (sub-division). Singh, a 1988-batch IPS officer, took charge as the Delhi police chief earlier this month. In a recent meeting held at Delhi Police headquarters, he reiterated that there was 'zero tolerance' for corruption in the force, said officers.
