Broncos' Sean Payton makes brass Bo Nix prediction for ‘next two years'

Everyone needs a boss to believe in them and Bo Nix certainly does. Broncos head coach Sean Payton has trust in his young quarterback — a lot of it. 'He's going to be one of the top four or five quarterbacks in the league the next two years,' Payton said in an interview with Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson. 'That's what we're seeing right now. He doesn't take sacks. He's got exceptional arm strength. … He threw the longest ball — (67) air yards against Cincinnati. He can run. He can throw in funny body angles.' 3 Bo Nix and Sean Payton talk at Broncos minicamp in June. AP Nix showed some tremendous flashes as a rookie, finishing his 17 games with 3,775 yards, 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, adding 430 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, too. In college, Nix spent three seasons at Auburn and two with Oregon. His final season with the Ducks was when he truly exploded to stardom, as he threw for 45 touchdowns with just three interceptions en route to a third-place Heisman Trophy finish. Nix led the nation in completions and completion percentage at 364 and 77.4, respectively. While he was the 12th pick in the 2024 draft, there were still five other quarterbacks taken ahead of him — Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, Michael Penix and JJ McCarthy. 3 Bo Nix is looking for a second-year leap this upcoming season after a promising rookie campaign. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Payton seems to believe he'll be the best of all of them. Nix was the second-most successful rookie of the bunch last season, leading the Broncos to a 10-7 record and a playoff berth, a better outcome than any rookie quarterback and their team aside from Daniels and the Commanders. Led by the 25-year-old quarterback, Payton has high hopes for the entire team, not just Nix. 3 Sean Payton is entering his third season as the Broncos' head coach. AP 'The short-term goal is winning the division,' he said. 'But this is a team capable of winning the Super Bowl. I've coached six teams that I thought could win the Super Bowl. Some went to championship games, some to the playoffs … This is my seventh team that I think has that.' Payton coached the Saints for 15 years and won one Super Bowl. He was the offensive mastermind who helped Drew Brees thrive as an all-time great quarterback.

Friedl hits a tiebreaking single in the 7th inning as the Reds edge the Cubs 3-2

CHICAGO (AP) — TJ Friedl hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the seventh inning, and the Cincinnati Reds held off the Chicago Cubs for a 3-2 win on Monday night. Tyler Stephenson homered for Cincinnati, and Elly De La Cruz had an RBI double. The Reds (59-54) had dropped four of six. Dansby Swanson hit his 17th homer for the Cubs (65-47), who fell three games behind NL Central-leading Milwaukee. With two outs and runners on the corners in the seventh, Friedl drove in Jake Fraley with a looper into center field against Caleb Thielbar. Ryan Brasier (0-1) got the loss. The Cubs threatened in the bottom half, advancing Willi Castro to third with two down. Swanson then hit a chopper to third and was ruled safe. The Reds challenged, and the call was overturned when a replay review showed Swanson missed the bag initially as he crossed first base. Both starters, Cincinnati's Nick Lodolo and Chicago's Michael Soroka, exited with injuries. The Cubs grabbed a 2-1 lead on Dansby Swanson's two-run homer off Nick Martinez in the third. But they finished with just three hits. Scott Barlow (5-0) pitched two innings for the win, and Emilio Pagán tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his 24th save. Pitching on his 28th birthday, Soroka departed his Cubs debut after two innings because of right shoulder discomfort. He was acquired in a trade with Washington on Thursday. Ben Brown replaced Soroka and tossed four innings of one-run ball. Key stat The Cubs had won three of four. Up next Zack Littell (8-8, 3.58 ERA) makes his Cincinnati debut on Tuesday night, and left-hander Shota Imanaga (8-4, 3.25 ERA) starts for Chicago. Littell was acquired in a trade with Tampa Bay last week. ___

Reds pitcher Hunter Greene suffers setback from groin injury, scratched from rehab start

So much for Hunter Greene returning from the injured list soon after the All-Star break when the Cincinnati Reds can use their Opening Day starter most. Greene, a first-time All-Star last year who was off to a strong start this year, had his injury rehab assignment pushed back because of recurring "tightness" in the area of the groin injury he suffered in early May and aggravated in late May. Results this week of another MRI on the area came back clean enough that manager Terry Francona said the club was "really pleased" with the results. 'But he's still feeling it, at times,' Francona said. 'I think there's not a lot of confidence there yet. Sometimes I think it feels fatigued. And we want to do the right thing. 'Sometimes it's very difficult. That's why we went out and got the MRI,' Francona said. 'You ask somebody to go out there and let it loose and throw 100 mph, and you don't want them worrying about anything.' Greene threw a simulated-game inning last week followed by a bullpen session Saturday in Philadelphia in preparation for what was to be the first start Tuesday in a brief rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville. 'I felt tightness,' he said. 'Doesn't make sense to go pitch when I still have a little tightness.' Greene was originally diagnosed with a Grade 1 groin strain, and the team indicated the subsequent MRI after aggravating it showed no additional severity. After consulting Monday afternoon with medial staff and team officials, Greene was scratched from Tuesday's scheduled rehab start. 'We're going to take some steps to give him a little more time so that when he does go out he's rarin' to go,' Francona said. What that means for a new timeline for a return from the IL was not immediately clear. The original rehab schedule appeared to give him enough time at Louisville to make two starts and be evaluated for a possible return to the rotation in the first turn after next week's break. The latest news suggests a timeline that could push into August even without another setback. 'We're going to take it day by day,' said Greene, who hasn't pitched since aggravating the injury in a start May 28 in Kansas City. That was his third start back from a two-week stretch for the original injury. Greene is 4-3 in 11 starts this season, with a 2.72 ERA and 11 strikeouts per nine innings. Meanwhile, Carson Spiers, who has been on the IL since April with a right shoulder impingement, is ready to start his minor-league rehab assignment and is scheduled to pitch as many as four innings Tuesday for Louisville. Spiers made two starts and a four-inning relief appearance in April before landing on the injured list.
