Engineer denies soliciting RM13k bribe in Butterworth court case
Mohamed Rizal Salim, 40, denied the charge during his Sessions Court hearing before Judge Zulhazmi Abdullah.
The prosecution alleged that Rizal, then a Grade J41 civil engineer at the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), sought the bribe from HHSB Enterprise director Toh Kean Hin in March 2022. The money was reportedly an inducement to approve procurement works for the company. The offence allegedly occurred at the DID Barat Daya District Engineer's Office.
Rizal faces charges under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years' jail and a fine of five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher. Deputy public prosecutor Noor Azura Zulkiflee proposed bail at RM15,000, but the defence argued for a lower sum.
Defence counsel Aqmarul Aqil Ismail highlighted Rizal's financial struggles, stating his client supports his wife and four children on a RM6,000 monthly salary while covering rent for two homes, including one for his ailing mother. The court granted bail at RM10,000 with conditions, including monthly MACC reporting and passport surrender. The next mention is set for August 8.

Company director detained for RM75m money laundering in fibre project
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has secured a four-day remand order against a company director with the title 'Datuk' for suspected money laundering involving RM75 million. The case is tied to a fibre network development project. Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin granted the remand until July 6 following the suspect's arrest at the MACC headquarters yesterday. The man, in his 50s, is accused of channelling funds from a RM400 million loan to his own company in 2012. A MACC source revealed that the arrest followed Op Fibre, a special operation conducted on June 30. Raids at four locations in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur led to the freezing of 12 bank accounts worth RM400,000. Senior Director Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin confirmed the case is being probed under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

Police open three investigation papers over Plus highway obstruction
REMBAU: Police have opened three investigation papers and arrested a man believed to be the owner of one of three vehicles involved in a recent traffic obstruction incident on the southbound stretch of the North-South Expressway (Plus), near the Pedas Linggi lay-by. Rembau district police chief Superintendent Hasani Hussain said the suspect, in his 50s, was arrested in the Seremban area at about 12.30am today. "We are still tracking down the remaining suspects, who are currently at large. "Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is a vehicle repossession agent. The group is believed to have briefly blocked the road while attempting to repossess a car. "They reportedly obstructed traffic for only a short duration," he said when contacted. Hasani said the case is being investigated under Section 279 of the Penal Code for negligent or reckless driving, which carries a maximum penalty of six months' imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction. The case is also being investigated under Section 341 of the Penal Code for wrongful obstruction of public passage, which provides for up to one month's jail, a fine of up to RM1,000, or both. Additionally, police have initiated a probe under Section 48 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing obstruction on the road. If convicted, offenders face a fine of between RM1,000 and RM5,000, and may have their driving licence suspended for up to 12 months. "Police take any form of disruption to traffic flow seriously. Such actions pose a danger to other road users, particularly on highways where vehicles travel at high speeds. "Not only are such acts unlawful, but they also have the potential to cause fatal accidents," he added.
