Movie theater stocks soar after record-breaking Memorial Day box office
Shares of movie theater companies soared on Tuesday following a record-breaking Memorial Day Weekend at the domestic box office.
AMC saw its stock jump more than 20%, while shares of Marcus Theatres' parent company Marcus Corporation climbed 8% and Cinemark stock leaped 2.5%.
The tandem releases of Disney's live-action "Lilo & Stitch" and Paramount's "Mission Impossible — The Final Reckoning" alongside holdovers Disney and Marvel's "Thunderbolts*," Warner Bros.' "Sinners" and "Final Destination Bloodlines" led to an estimated $326 million haul, the highest Memorial Day box office ever, according to data from Comscore.
It is also more than double the $132 million in ticket sales collected last year during the same period.
"Everything came together at the right time with two eagerly anticipated, positively reviewed tentpoles courting a diverse range of audiences," said Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory. "This record holiday frame continues a box office winning streak which began in the spring and has now grown into bona fide momentum for what will likely be a $4 billion-plus summer at domestic cinemas thanks to a string of promising blockbusters on the slate."
AMC, Cinemark and Marcus Theatres each posted their best Memorial Day Weekend ticket revenues of all time, as well as record food and beverage sales for the holiday.
"Finally it would appear that our industry has turned a corner," Adam Aron, CEO of AMC, said in a statement. "Since early April, weekend after weekend, moviegoers have been demonstrating their preference for theatrical moviegoing. A record-setting Memorial Day holiday is yet another sign of the continued strength and relevance of moviegoing in 2025."
"Lilo & Stitch" tallied $183 million during the four-day frame, leading the pack, while the eighth installment in the Mission Impossible franchise scooped up $77 million. "Final Destination Bloodlines" took in $23.9 million, "Thunderbolts*" added $11.8 million and "Sinners" snared $11 million, Comscore reported.
The combination of new product and strong carryover from previously released films fueled the weekend, Chad Paris, chief financial officer at Marcus Corp, told CNBC.
"This is the first time this year where I would say we've had a fulsome amount of product for the weekend," he said. "And we're now getting into the stretch in the calendar where we'll have a steady cadence of product releases and across genres, a lot of different products for people to go see."
Over the summer period, which ends Labor Day Weekend, the domestic box office will see the release of Universal's live-action version of "How to Train Your Dragon," a new Disney and Pixar feature "Elio," the hotly anticipated "Jurassic World Rebirth," Warner Bros.' "Superman" reboot, and Disney and Marvel's "The Fantastic Four: First Steps."
In between these tentpoles are a slew of low-and-mid budget films across genres like horror, drama, comedy and sports.
"Every other studio and every other movie on the horizon over the next few weeks are going to ride a wave and benefit from the performance of the past couple of months," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. "We're going to have one hell of a summer and if Memorial Weekend is any indication, we're certainly looking at a $4 billion plus summer at potentially $4.2 billion plus and that's great news after a summer of 2024 that failed to reach that milestone."

'Lilo & Stitch' passes 'Sinners' to become 2nd highest grossing film of 2025
'Lilo & Stich' and 'Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning' dominated the box office charts again after fueling a record-breaking Memorial Day weekend. Theaters in the U.S. and Canada had several new films to offer this weekend as well, including Sony's family friendly 'Karate Kid: Legends' and the A24 horror movie 'Bring Her Back. ' According to studio estimates Sunday, it added up to a robust $149 million post-holiday weekend that's up over 120% from the same timeframe last year. Disney's live-action hybrid 'Lilo & Stitch' took first place again with $63 million from 4,410 locations in North America. It was enough to pass 'Sinners' to become the second-highest grossing movie of the year with $280.1 million in domestic ticket sales. Globally, its running total is $610.8 million. 'Sinners,' meanwhile, is still going strong in its seventh weekend with another $5.2 million, bumping it to $267.1 million domestically and $350.1 million globally. The eighth 'Mission: Impossible' movie also repeated in second place, with $27.3 million from 3,861 locations. As with 'Lilo & Stitch,' that's down 57% from its opening. With $122.6 million in domestic tickets sold, it's performing in line with the two previous installments. But with a reported production budget of $400 million, profitability is a ways off. Internationally, it added $76.1 million (including $25.2 million from China where it just opened), bringing its global total to $353.8 million. 'This is the year of longterm playability,' said Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore's senior media analyst. 'The currency of word of mouth and the strong hold is more important than opening weekend dollars.' Leading the newcomers was Sony's 'Karate Kid: Legends,' with an estimated $21 million from 3,809 locations. The movie brings Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio together to train a new kid, the kung fu prodigy Li Fong ( Ben Wang ). Chan starred in a 2010 reboot of the 1984 original, while Macchio has found a new generation of fans in the series 'Cobra Kai,' which just concluded a six-season run. Reviews might have been mixed, but opening weekend audiences gave the PG-13 rated film a strong A- CinemaScore and 4.5 stars on PostTrak. It also only cost a reported $45 million to produce and has several weeks until a new family-friendly film arrives. 'Karate Kid: Legends' opened earlier internationally and has a worldwide total of $47 million. Fourth place went 'Final Destination: Bloodlines,' which earned $10.8 million in its third weekend. The movie is the highest-grossing in the franchise, not accounting for inflation, with $229.3 million globally. The weekend's other big newcomer, 'Bring Her Back' rounded out the top five with $7.1 million from 2,449 screens. Starring Sally Hawkins as a foster mother with some disturbing plans, the film is the sophomore feature of twin filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou, who made the 2023 horror breakout 'Talk to Me.' It earned a rare-for-horror B+ CinemaScore and is essentially the only new film in the genre until '28 Years Later' opens on June 20. A new Wes Anderson movie, 'The Phoenician Scheme,' also debuted in New York and Los Angeles this weekend, where it made $270,000. It expands nationwide next weekend. The summer box office forecast remains promising, though there's a long way to go to get to the $4 billion target (a pre-pandemic norm that only the 'Barbenheimer' summer has surpassed). The month of May is expected to close out with $973 million – up 75% from May 2024, according to data from Comscore. Top 10 movies by domestic box office With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore: 1. 'Lilo & Stitch,' $63 million. 2. 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,' $27.3 million. 3. 'Karate Kid: Legends,' 21 million. 4. 'Final Destination: Bloodlines,' $10.8 million. 5. 'Bring Her Back,' $7.1 million. 6. 'Sinners,' $5.2 million. 7. 'Thunderbolts,' $4.8 million. 8. 'Friendship,' $2.6 million. 9. 'The Last Rodeo,' $2.1 million. 10. 'j-hope Tour 'HOPE ON THE STAGE' in JAPAN: LIVE VIEWING,' $939,173. TWD: Dead City Goes On a Bloody Killing Spree Halfway Through Season 2
The Walking Dead: Dead City is going to have to hang a 'Help Wanted' sign ahead of Season 3. Halfway through Season 2, the AMC drama killed off not one or two but three characters and forewarned us that a fourth wouldn't be around for much longer. Who went down for the count? First up was Animal Kingdom vet Jake Weary's Christos. Negan was thisclose to recruiting him and his gang to fight with the Burazi against the New Babylon Federation's would-be methane thieves when The Croat came in and mucked everything up. Blaming Christos for a substation outage, The Dama's lackey gassed the lot of 'em and bashed in their heads. More from TVLine MobLand Finale Recap: The Harrigan Rat, Revealed! Plus: Grade the Episode Ncuti Gatwa Bids Doctor Who Farewell as Finale Ends With a Most Surprising Twist - Grade It! Your Friends & Neighbors Finale Reveals Who Killed Paul - Will You Come Back for Season 2? Not much of a guest arc for Weary, then, eh? Next in line, a power-mad Narvaez seized control of the Foragers' hideout and hanged Roksana when she refused to ally her people with the New Babylon Federation. Maggie was supposed to follow her into the noose, but she was saved at the last minute by Ginny, who felt bad about blabbing that Perlie hadn't killed Negan the way legend had it that he had. Or, for that matter at all. But wait, there was more. As walkers swarmed the real-life game of hangman, a reanimated Roksana feasted on Narvaez. And after all that, Maggie, Perlie & Co. found themselves at Bruegel's mercy. (Having seen how he treated Tony the Bodyguard, I think we can all agree that that is the last place anyone would ever want to be!) Now then, back to the killing. Egged on by Negan, The Croat confronted The Dama about her shoddy treatment of him. Later, all Negan had to do was squash The Dama's precious pet rat and let her think that The Croat had done it. Once again, the two of them argued, this time about which of them was nothing without the other. When all was said and done, a fire had broken out and The Croat had let The Dama burn. Finally, we saw that Ginny had been bitten while saving Maggie. In other words, the girl's days were numbered. So what do you think? Will she even try to kill Negan the next time she sees him? Will he reveal to her why he killed her father? And who will be left alive by the end of the season? Every Walking Dead Series, Ranked View List Hit the comments with your best guesses.
