BEST credit society served notices ahead of polls
The BEST Kamgar Sena, a wing of the Sena (UBT) currently in control of the credit society, says the move is a ploy by the BJP-led Mahayuti government to muddy the waters ahead of the August 18 elections in the credit cooperative. The poll will pit the Sena (UBT)-MNS alliance against Mahayuti coalition partners, the BJP and Shiv Sena, both on the back foot in these elections.
More critically, the BEST Kamgar Sena sees the move as an attempt to undermine Sena (UBT)-MNS unity, the first formal alliance between the two political parties led by the Thackeray cousins, Uddhav and Raj, leaders of the Sena (UBT) and MNS, respectively.
For the upcoming polls, the Sena (UBT) will contest 18 of the 21 seats up for grabs, the MNS two seats, and the BEST SC/ST Employees Welfare Association one seat. If the alliance wins the election, the MNS will bag one more post, that of a nominated director. In contrast, the BJP and Shiv Sena led by deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde will be contesting the election as opposition parties.
Now, less than a week before the polls, the credit cooperative has been served notices by the state cooperation department and the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police. The first notice, dated August 13, has been served by the divisional joint registrar of co-operative societies in Mumbai. It states, 'As per the complaint application by Vivekanand Ghag and Rajendra Gore, under section 89 A of Maharashtra Cooperation Department, deputy registrar Rajendra Gaikwad has been appointed as investigation officer to conduct inquiry of records of society of year 2024-25. Jitendra Chavan will assist him and they will submit an inquiry report by August 29.'
The credit society has also received a notice from the EOW, initiating an inquiry into an alleged ₹24-crore irregularity in the cooperative, on a complaint filed by Ghag.
Suhas Samant, president of the BEST Kamgar Sena, slammed the Mahayuti government and BJP leaders, alleging that BJP MLC Prasad Lad has instigated the inquiry. 'For years, the BEST Kamgar Sena has been in power in the credit society. This time, however, the Sena (UBT) and MNS have entered into an alliance for the elections, which has upset Mahayuti leaders. Now the society's office-bearers have received notices. BJP MLC Prasad Lad is behind this. They want to create confusion among voters,' he said.
'But in the last audit conducted by a government auditor, the BEST Employees Credit Society received an 'A' grade and this is in the public domain. How can a credit society assigned an A grade be accused of irregularities,' asked Samant.
Responding to the allegation, Prasad Lad said an inquiry will be conducted as there were irregularities in the credit cooperative. Government agencies have initiated an inquiry on the basis of a complaint filed by Ghag. The cooperation department is conducting a separate inquiry and the EOW is looking into irregularities of ₹24 crore in the credit society. The framing was a well-thought-out answer to the Opposition's accusation over decades that the BJP wants UCC because it wants to replace the Muslim personal law on issues such as marriage and inheritance that affect the Muslim community. Recalling that the Constitution placed the vision for UCC in the Directive Principles of State Policy and that the state should strive towards it — Article 44 talks about the need for it — Modi painted the opponents of the idea as the backers of a 'communal' civil code, using the language of the Opposition to hit out at it. In a clear hint that he would not change his politics because the BJP had fallen short of a majority on its own, Modi had called for simultaneous elections at the Lok Sabha and the state Assemblies. He pointed out that the Ram Nath Kovind Committee, which had been set up to study the idea's feasibility, had given a good recommendation for the same. This time, the PM faces two challenges. Yogi showcases his governance model, makes 2027 poll pitch
Amid a buzz about a restructuring in the BJP after its less than expected performance in Uttar Pradesh in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday set the pitch for the 2027 assembly polls, highlighted his government's achievements over the last eight years and spelt out future endeavours in his marathon address in the state assembly on Vision 2047. The underlying message of his address appeared to be that his governance model can propel the BJP to take on the Opposition and pave the way for the party to retain power in 2027 Aiming to galvanise the party supporters, Yogi said, 'Uttar Pradesh is now the epicenter of India's energy. Today, Uttar Pradesh has become a beacon of hope and expectation for the nation, leading the way as India advances its vision of Viksit Bharat. Yogi said his tenure paved the way for excellent connectivity by water, land, and air. Capital expenditure increased from ₹69,789 crore in 2017 to ₹1,47,719 crore in 2025. The number of expressways rose from two to 22, including seven operational, five under construction, and 10 proposed expressways forming the country's largest network, he said. An investor-friendly environment under his government has made UP a top destination, he said. Schemes are implemented without discrimination or appeasement now, he said while asserting that the Opposition's PDA slogan is a ploy to deceive the public whereas his government has truly worked for Pichhda (backward), Dalit and Alpsankhyak (minority) artisans. Reaching out to the rural populace, whose vote will be decisive, he said from 1947 to 2017 villages areas suffered from a severe lack of basic facilities such as housing, electricity, roads, and drinking water. From 2017 to 2025, his government provided permanent houses to more than 56.80 lakh families. Additionally, 235 crore man-days were generated under MGNREGA. To promote employment and livelihood in rural areas, more than 98 lakh families have joined self-help groups (SHGs), he said. Prashant Trivedi, associate professor at Giri Institute of Development Studies, Lucknow, said the incumbent government has focused on infrastructure, but it is no more a political issue since successive governments have done well on this front. 'The 2027 challenge before the BJP government would be how they address people's issues like access to quality education, public health and decent employment. Surely, things are not as rosy as they appear on this front,' he said.

5 Men Jailed For Life For Murdering Gurugram Local BJP Leader
Gurugram: A Gurugram court has sentenced five convicts to life imprisonment for the murder of local BJP leader and ex-vice president of the Sohna market committee, Sukhbir Khatana alias Sukhi, police said on Thursday. The court of Additional Sessions Judge Sunil Kumar Diwan also slapped a fine of Rs 1 lakh on each of the convicts, they said. The STF had arrested 20 persons for reportedly conducting a recce and carrying out the murder, police said. On September 1, 2022, BJP leader Khatana, a resident of Rithoj village, was gunned down in broad daylight by armed assailants at a Raymonds showroom on the Gurdwara Road near Sadar Bazaar when he was buying clothes. Anurag, the son of the deceased, accused the involvement of Khatana's brother-in-law Chaman and his accomplices in the murder. Based on his complaint, an FIR has been registered at the Civil Lines police station. After a brief investigation, the case was transferred to the Special Task Force (STF), which arrested 20 persons, including Chaman alias Pawan, politician Rohtas Khatana's brother Joginder, and gangster Vikram Singh alias Papla Gujjar. After hearing both sides, the court sentenced five out of the 20 accused on Monday, including Chaman, Yogesh, Deepak, Arun alias Ankul and Rahul. Khatana held the post of vice-chairman of the Sohna Nagar Parishad. His wife Pushpa is presently the councillor from Ward No. 2. Pushpa's brother Chaman had a grudge against Khatana due to his court marriage with his sister, police said. According to police, Chaman conducted a recce of Khatana more than 10 times.
