Why Vick Hope is turning her placenta into pills in controversial trend loved by celebs

Daily Mirror4 days ago
After Calvin Harris posted a Instagram carousel featuring a snap of his wife's placenta pills, social media has been divided. But why is the consumption of this pregnancy organ so popular?
Music mogul Calvin Harris initially delighted fans after sharing snaps of his and his wife Vick Hope's newborn son. Except many weren't prepared for the picture that came next, which featured a close-up of none other than Vick's placenta.

The DJ also shared further shots of the placenta cut into pieces and placed in a dehydrator to be made into pills. Unsurprisingly, the Instagram snapshots proved divisive among viewers. "I was NOT prepared for the placenta pic," one shocked fan wrote. 'Where's the trigger warning,' another said. However, others were far more supportive and congratulated Calvin for 'normalising the beauty of physiological birth'.

Regardless of what camp you're in, eating the placenta after birth has become an increasingly mainstream phenomenon. It's even been endorsed by the likes of Kim Kardashian and Alicia Silverstone. But why do people do it?

Why do people eat the placenta?
The placenta is an organ which is grown during pregnancy and which provides the foetus with essential nutrients. It's typically discarded after a woman gives birth, however some people choose to consume it in a variety of forms.
People generally consume the placenta as they believe it contains nutritional benefits. According to WebMD, those who support eating the placenta claim it can help with childbirth recovery, raise your energy and breast milk quantity and reduce pain.

They also believe it can lower your chances of developing postpartum depression and insomnia. However, there is currently no strong scientific evidence to support these benefits.
What are placenta pills?
While there are a multitude of ways to consume the placenta - from cooking it whole to blending it up in a smoothie – a popular method of eating the organ is by transforming it into pills. Known as encapsulation, this is done by steaming and dehydrating the placenta, then grinding it up into a powder to be put in capsules.

Placenta pill benefits?
While people consume placenta pills to aid post-natal healing and reduce the risk of mental health issues like postpartum depression, the industry relies on largely anecdotal evidence, as reported by The Guardian.
According to a 2017 study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, there is 'no scientific evidence of any clinical benefit of placentophagy among humans, and no placental nutrients and hormones are retained in sufficient amounts after placenta encapsulation to be potentially helpful to the mother postpartum.'
Where to find placenta pills?
You can find placenta pill services in the UK which are conducted by specialists. You can order placenta pills in advance of your due date. These service providers will collect your placenta and turn it into pill form, with prices of around £250.

One in ten couples choose to doomscroll rather than have sex study finds

Experts have warned that your social media scrolling habits may impact your relationships as more people choose to doomscroll than be intimate with eachother, but there are ways you can kick the habit Doomscrolling is taking over - and it's affecting your sex life according to experts. Sometimes laying in bed, scrolling on TikTok and finding yourself in a deep dive can be a nice way to switch off, but it might be causing harm to your relationship. ‌ Doomscrolling is the act of spending an excessive amount of time on social media scrolling through overwhelmingly negative content. A recent study by technology manufacturer OnePlus found that one in ten Brits are preferring to scroll on their phones, rather than have sex with their partner. ‌ While nearly half (43%) admit the anti-social habit has been the reason for arguments in their relationships. It comes after a woman claimed 'I regret marrying an older man, one part of our history has given me the ick'. ‌ The distraction could be one of the biggest ways to pull couples apart. According to Behavioural Psychologist, Dr Linda Papadopoulos, she warns that with constant scrolling 'people aren't just wasting time, they're losing the opportunity to connect with what really matters'. While it might feel like doomscrolling helps you to stay informed, research shows that this habit often results in considerable psychological distress. This ultimately leads to lower mental wellbeing, poorer life satisfaction, and reduced engagement at work. ‌ The study further found that 54% of people fall into the habit of doomscrolling in bed - and robbing themselves of much needed rest and peace of mind, which resulted in 44% losing track of time and 17% struggling to sleep. What's more, the research from OnePlus delved into the nation's doomscrolling habits, and found that the brain-draining content we all fall victim to was from negative news (32%), to reality TV drama (32%) and rabbit-hole conspiracy theories (26%). For more stories like this subscribe to our weekly newsletter, The Weekly Gulp, for a curated roundup of trending stories, poignant interviews, and viral lifestyle picks from The Mirror's Audience U35 team delivered straight to your inbox. ‌ According to Dr Papadopoulos, we instinctively reach for our phones to "soothe uncertainty" but the constant stream of negative information "heightens our stress levels". She added: "Over half of those surveyed said they wish they had more hours in the day, yet those hours are quietly being swallowed by an endless scroll. This isn't a question of willpower or laziness, it's a reflection of how our brains are wired to seek out threat, novelty, and stimulation." So if you feel like your scrolling habit is taking over your social life and relationships, you can make a conscious decision to change it you can replace it with a habit that's more fulfilling. According to Dr Emma Palmer-Cooper, a Chartered Research Psychologist, having an after-work hobby is linked to better wellbeing and may play a part in reducing work-related stress. Creative activities in particular are known to encourage a sense of personal fulfilment through developing new skills. Personal fulfilment is important for emotional resilience. Also take time to spend with your partner without your phones to enjoy each others' company. ‌ "Some of the most beneficial hobbies to try in order to break your doomscrolling habit are those that encourage mindfulness. Doing a hobby mindfully simply means paying attention to what you're doing and being in the moment – whether that's colouring, knitting or sewing." She noted that activities such as colouring, knitting, sewing and crochet are a good place to start as they involve repetitive, soothing movements along with a sense of achievement. Celebrity dentist warns of tooth art danger after Kim Kardashian's tooth fairy post

Celebrity dentist and star of the Real Housewives of Cheshire, Dr Hanna Kinsella, has issued a warning about using tooth art on kids and gave her top tips to key oral hygiene A celebrity dentist has laid bare concerns surrounding tooth art for kids following a recent social media post by Kim Kardashian. Taking to Instagram, Kim confided the "tooth fairy has been good to us" as she showcased her son Saint's latest tooth loss. ‌ In the post, the mum-of-four gushed over her nine-year-old child's milestone. She also shared snaps of her other kids, North, 12, Chicago, 7, and Psalm, 6, showing off their evolving smiles. ‌ In the images, the youngsters were seen sporting Hello Kitty and Louis Vuitton tooth gems and custom grills. It led to some followers questioning the safety of such accessories. ‌ Now, Dr Hanna Kinsella, has exclusively told the Mirror of the risks involved with the looks. The celebrity dentist and star of Real Housewives of Cheshire told us: "Although tooth jewels aren't in themselves dangerous you also need to consider that adhesive is used to apply them, which if used by an inexperienced person this could be dangerous if it was applied to the wrong area such as lips or gums by accident." She added: "Over time jewelled gems on teeth and caps may wear the enamel of the tooth away, increasing the risk of tooth decay and infection. ‌ "Also, dental jewels can affect your ability to clean teeth properly, meaning that it can be an ideal place for food and bacteria to hide, resulting in increased risk of tooth decay and cavities. "The adhesive that's used to stick the gem on can also lead to discolouration of the tooth. Also, it's concerning that they are often applied at home, resulting in a lack of regulation and guidance meaning there's more scope for things to go wrong and damage to the teeth to be done." ‌ However, Hanna, who is also the founder of Icy Bear Dental Care, admitted: "As a dentist and a mum, I think it's great when celebrities like Kim Kardashian shine a spotlight on children's health, especially something as often overlooked as teeth. "With such a wide reach, it's important that the advice being shared is accurate. Celebrity posts can help raise awareness, but they can also unintentionally cause confusion. "The key is starting healthy habits early and making sure we're protecting our children's smiles, and not just decorating them." And she gave her top tips to parents with youngsters for ideal oral care. It included making sure kids don't clean their teeth directly after eating due to the damage it could cause to tooth enamel. Instead, she recommends waiting 30 minutes. Hanna also urged parents to "start dental visits early". She said: "Book your child into the dentist as soon as they have their first teeth so that they can get to know the dentist and enjoy the process."
