A.P. govt. sets target to increase green cover to 50% by 2047
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has announced an ambitious plan to increase the green cover in the State to 37% by 2029 and 50% by 2047, saying that 'those who do not plant trees have no right to expect clean air.'
Participating in World Environment Day celebrations at ADC Park in Ananthavaram village of Thullur mandal in Guntur district on Thursday, Mr. Naidu emphasised the collective responsibility of all citizens in safeguarding the environment.
Komera Ankarao appointed adviser
Mr. Naidu appointed Komera Ankarao, popularly known as 'Andhra Forest Man', who has been working to protect Nallamala forests, as Adviser to the Forest and Environment Department. 'His (Mr. Ankarao) grassroots conservation efforts and awareness campaigns are inspirational, and his role will be pivotal in guiding the State's green mission,' Mr. Naidu said.
The Chief Minister, joined by Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan, launched a massive one-crore tree plantation drive and pledged to raise 5.58 crore saplings by the Environment Day next year.
Highlighting the urgency of combating global warming, Mr. Naidu noted, 'Rainfall has declined, groundwater is depleting, agriculture is at risk, and fluoride-related health issues are rising. Trees are our only rescue.'
Seed Rakhi
Mr. Pawan Kalyan, who holds the Environment portfolio, emphasised the importance of citizens' participation and awareness among the youth. 'We are starting innovative campaigns such as 'Seed Rakhi' to involve young girls in environmental protection,' he said. He also assured the creation of urban forests in all 175 Assembly constituencies and efforts to eliminate single-use plastic across the State by June 2026.
Currently, Andhra Pradesh has a green cover of 30.05%, with forest areas spanning 23% of the State's landmass. Mr. Naidu noted that past regimes had planted trees only for 'photo opportunities', while the current administration is committed to bringing in a measurable impact.
Green capital
The Chief Minister also revealed plans to transform Amaravati into a green, futuristic capital, introducing Miyawaki gardens, renewable energy projects, and free 2-kilowatt solar panels for SC and ST households. Waste-to-energy plants in Guntur and Visakhapatnam, and 157 Reduce-Reuse-Recycle (RRR) centres across 87 municipalities are already operational.
Mr. Naidu concluded by announcing that International Yoga Day, on June 21, would be held under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Visakhapatnam, aiming to set a Guinness World Record with participation from more than 2 crore people across the State.

Jubilee Hills MLA Maganti passes away
Hyderabad: Jubilee Hills BRS legislator Maganti Gopinath, who had been hospitalized following a massive heart attack, passed away at 5.45 am on Sunday. The Telangana government performed the last rites of the legislator with state honours. Maganti Gopinath was admitted into AIG Hospitals on June 5 after a heart attack and was under observation of doctors for 48 hours. He was declared dead at 5.45 am by the doctors. He was said to be suffering also with kidney problems for the past few months. Maganti Gopinath was born to Krishnamurthy and Maha Nanda Kumari. He started his political career with Telugu Desam in 1983. From 1985 to 1992, he worked as Telugu Yuvatha State president. He had also served as the Director of Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA) in 1987, 1988. He served as the chairman of Consumers Forum from 1988 to 1993. He was appointed as the Hyderabad District Telugu Desam president. Gopinath entered the Assembly in 2014, having contested on the ticket of Telugu Desam, which was then in alliance with the BJP. He joined the BRS (TRS then) in 2016 and won on the BRS ticket in the 2018 Assembly elections. He was appointed as member of the Public Estimates Committee (PEC) in the Assembly. He won the 2023 election by defeating cricketer-turned-politician Mohd Azharuddin. Maganti Gopinath was interested in the film industry and he produced a few films including Patabasti (1995), Ravanna (2000), Bhadradri Ramudu (2004), Naa Style Veru (2009). He is survived by wife Sunitha, son Vatsalyanath, daughters Akshara Nag and Dishira. BRS leaders mourned the death of their leader at a young age. BRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao visited the residence of Gopinath and paid floral tributes. KCR consoled the bereaved wife and children of Gopinath. He gave them courage. He took his son Vatsalyanath close to him and consoled him. He assured them that the party would stand by them in difficult times. KCR got emotional on seeing the mortal remains of Gopinath, who was a gentleman. BRS party Working President KT Rama Rao, his wife Shailima, son Himanshu Rao, and his family members were standing by and consoling them. KTR said that the sudden death of BRS Hyderabad president Maganti Gopinath was a huge loss for the party. KTR rushed to the hospital in the morning along with his wife Shailima and their son Himanshu after knowing the death of Gopinath. KTR said that his 'brother', the gentle-natured Gopinath, had risen step by step in politics and was elected MLA three times in a row and gained recognition as a public leader. KTR said that his services to the people of the constituency would never be forgotten, and it was very painful to lose a good leader. Spirit of unity among Telugus paramount: CM
Hyderabad: Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, while affirming that the Telugu community held a unique position in the country, urged leaders from the Telugu states to jointly work with a spirit of unity and togetherness to take Telugu to number one position in the country's growth. He was addressing a gathering at the release of the Telugu version of Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya's autobiography 'Prajala Kathe Naa Atmakatha' (The story of the people of Telangana is my autobiography) here on Sunday. Naidu recalled that Telangana was previously part of the Nizam State, while Andhra Pradesh was under the Madras Presidency. Initially, both regions were united as Andhra Pradesh. Eventually, they became two separate states: Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. However, he emphasized the importance of unity, stating that "Telugu jathi okkate" (Telugus are one) should always be our guiding principle. He noted that while political parties may have differing opinions and some leaders may have delivered effectively during their tenure, the spirit of unity among Telugus remained paramount. The country's future looks promising under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Just as the Jewish diaspora earned a name for itself in the world, "there is a need to take forward the Telugu people into a brighter future." For this, "we need to emulate the spirit of Bandaru Dattatreya," he observed. Striking a note of nostalgia at the event's venue, he recalled how efforts had been made to invite former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee to inaugurate the HI-TEC City, adding Cyberabad district to the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. However, while IT companies were housed in Cyberabad, "Silparamama and Silpakala Vedika were established to showcase the Telugu culture and traditions," he added. Naidu stated that Bandaru Dattatreya had endeared himself to everyone and exemplified the qualities of a true gentleman. The Chief Minister remarked that it took courage for a politician to declare that his story was the story of the people. This statement reflects a deep connection and bond with the community forged over decades of his life's journey. The Chief Minister stated that while Dattatreya might be associated with Hindutva, his true essence embodied the spirit of Bharatiya culture. He exemplified the unity in diversity that characterized our country. This quality had elevated him from an ordinary activist to a national-level leader. Reflecting on Dattatreya's contributions during the Emergency period and his dedicated service as an RSS pracharak during the Diviseema Cyclone, the Chief Minister acknowledged the numerous challenges he had faced throughout his journey. He brought the spirit of unity and diversity, launching the Alai Balai programme to bring leaders of all parties together and made him a friend of all without an enemy in the two Telugu states. His political life will be remembered as an ideal life, he noted. Naidu, recalling the foreward of PM Modi wrote to the book, said he held several positions in the party, MLA, MP, Union Minister, and governor of Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. However, he remained an ordinary worker, he said. Naidu recalled that he had lost count of the letters Dattatreya had written to him when he was the chief minister of united Andhra Pradesh. He earned the rare opportunity to work with great personalities in the Sangh and Vajpayee, Murli Manohar Joshi, LK Advani, M Venkaiah Naidu, Rajnath Singh, and Narendra Modi. However, he remained leading an ordinary life. Further, he noted how Dattatreya worked for the development of Hyderabad. Besides Union Minister Kishan Reddy, Rajya Sabha MP Dr. K Laxman, Tripura Governor, and former BJP state chief Indrasena Reddy contributed to the development of Hyderabad He said that the autobiography of Dattatreya, detailing life experiences of working in the southern and northern India would be an inspiration, setting an example to the people and future generations.

'We Honour Daughters': Chandrababu Naidu Slams Offensive Remarks Against Amaravati Women
Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and his deputy Pawan Kalyan on Sunday condemned derogatory remarks allegedly made by a couple of journalists against women of Amaravati. Mr Naidu referred to alleged offensive statements made by a journalist in a vernacular news channel who allegedly made highly disparaging comments against the women of greenfield capital city Amaravati. The women in Amaravati on Sunday took out a protest march condemning the remarks made by journalists. "Ours is a culture that honours daughters. We revere women as divine, especially among Telugu people who hold mothers and daughters in highest esteem," Mr Naidu said in a post on 'X'. The Chief Minister said that people had already rejected this toxic mindset through the democratic mandate, yet derogatory narratives still persist against women in the capital region of Amaravati. Mr Naidu termed the silence of opposition leader and YSRCP chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy over the alleged remarks as "deeply troubling". The Chief Minister further said that the offensive remarks are not just political attacks. They are assaults on every woman's dignity and pride, he said, demanding accountability and apology. He assured that strict action would follow, emphasising the NDA government's commitment to uphold women's respect. We will not let such culture prevail, he said. Similarly, Pawan Kalyan said Amaravati, a land enriched with the legacy of Gautama Buddha, stands as a historic symbol of peace where Buddhism once thrived and spiritual traditions flourished. "This (Amaravati) is a land sanctified by Gautama Buddha and Acharya Nagarjuna. Such remarks demean the legacy of Amaravati and insult the dignity of its women," said Kalyan in a post on 'X'.
