How eating whole food, plant-based proteins lowers the risk of having high blood pressure
Eating more minimally processed plant-based proteins – such as beans, nuts and lentils – may lower the risk for high blood pressure, according to new research.

The study, published recently in the Journal of the American Heart Association, also suggested that minimally processed animal proteins could be included in weekly meal plans without significantly affecting a person's
high blood pressure risk
'Our study focused on foods, not the plant-based supplements that can be found on store shelves,' said the study's senior author Dr Marcia Otto, a nutritional epidemiologist and an associate professor at UT Health Houston School of Public Health in the US state of Texas.
Nearly half of all adults in the US have high blood pressure, or hypertension, a condition that raises the risk for
heart attacks
strokes and other health problems.

Chef Phila Lorn was not necessarily aiming for authentic Cambodian food when he opened Mawn in Philadelphia, the US city where he was born, two years ago. In June, he will be representing his dual cultures – Cambodian and Philly – at his first James Beard Awards as a nominee for best emerging chef. Cambodian food is often lazily lumped in with its Southeast Asian neighbours, despite distinct differences. But in recent years, enterprising Cambodian American chefs have come into their own, introducing traditional dishes or putting their own twist on them. Since then, the Cambodian community in the US has grown and put down roots.

11 injured in stabbing attack at Oregon homeless shelter, suspect arrested
A dozen people were injured in a stabbing attack at an Oregon homeless shelter on Sunday night. A suspect has been arrested, police said. Advertisement A man with a knife walked into the lobby of the Union Gospel Mission in Salem at around 7.15pm local time, the Salem Police Department said on Monday. The man had been talking to people in the lobby when he allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed several people, according to police. Other people in the vicinity were hurt when they tried to intervene, police said. The man then left the building and stabbed others who were nearby, sitting outside. Police arrested a suspect identified as Tony Williams, 42, across the street from the shelter. Eleven victims, including two shelter staff members, were taken to a hospital for treatment and a 12th victim was identified as officers interviewed witnesses. Police said the victims suffered 'varying types of injuries'. All of the injured were men between the ages of 26 and 57, police said. Advertisement Five people remained hospitalised on Monday with serious injuries. Police have not specified a motive for the stabbings, but said it did not seem targeted at people who are homeless.

Microsoft sees future of the internet as AI agents crawling websites for us, tech willing
Microsoft sees artificial intelligence transforming the internet as fundamentally as mobile phones have over the past two decades. But the technology's limitations could curb its grand vision. Generative AI – which creates content based on a user's request – burst into the zeitgeist in late 2022 when Microsoft-backed OpenAI launched ChatGPT , a conversational chatbot that could take a simple request and generate anything from a limerick to a college essay. Less than three years later, Microsoft has a plan to move beyond ChatGPT and its copycats by creating the foundation for a new version of the internet. Microsoft calls it the 'open agentic web', with users sending AI-powered 'agents' out into the void to do their bidding. Casual consumers primarily interact with AI now through a Google search – one that repeatedly drums up false answers – or a ChatGPT-style chatbot that generates a conversation.
