Hand-built classic car helping put town on global map

A hand-built classic car is helping put a town on the global map.
The Malvern-made Morgan Supersport took centre stage at a recent event in London celebrating the UK's most successful car manufacturers.
Dame Harriett Baldwin, MP for West Worcestershire, met with Morgan Motor Company's chief commercial officer, Gary Pearson, at the event to discuss the company's international ambitions and the challenges posed by US trade tariffs.
Dame Harriett said: "It was great to see a Malvern-built car lining up alongside some of the greatest cars in the world to promote the very best of British manufacturing.
"Morgan's historic cars are hand-built by local people at a factory in the heart of Malvern and it has been a proud champion of the town.
"I will continue to speak up for Morgan Motors and its highly-valued network of local suppliers as it competes on the world stage and puts Malvern in the global spotlight."
The Morgan Supersport was displayed alongside vehicles from Aston Martin, Bentley, Lotus, and McLaren.
The event aimed to showcase the success of UK car brands and raise awareness of the contribution of smaller manufacturers to the industry.

EV Company Everrati Unveils New 993-Generation Porsche 911-Based Model

There are more than a few methods of automotive preservation in our current era, and among the most tech-forward is by United Kingdom-based Everrati Automotive Limited. Rather than strictly following the norms and folkways of maintaining originality, this company preserves the core fundamentals in certain iconic cars' driving characteristics, yet with an eco-friendly twist: dropping the internal combustion engine (ICE) in favor of its own tailored EV powertrain. And, wrapped in a ground-up re-engineering of the entire vehicle, complete with bespoke luxury customization. Everrati's made a name for itself with its 964-generation Porsche 911-based creations, one of which I had the privilege of driving for a different publication a few months back. I was pleasantly surprised by how true to the original 911 formula it was, between its beautiful steering, braking, and handling. Plus, more than enough power to walk any one of the 964's original iterations in the quarter mile. Now, the company's unveiled that it's now working with 993-generation-based 911s, the generation that came after the 964 and before the water-cooled 996. Think: Quintessential '90s Porsche styling and driving. And if it follows the same fun-to-drive formula as the 964, it could be the best sports car it's created, yet. The 993 is widely regarded as the pinnacle air-cooled 911, with its compact and lightweight (for its era) construction, improved structural rigidity, and just-modern-enough accouterments. Everrati's 993 will take the form of an initial, nine-unit run dubbed the Founders Edition that pays design homage to the generation's Turbo S, of which only 345 were ever made. It will err on the side of luxury grand touring with a bespoke tailored interior, emphasis on refinement in its driving experience, and harness the latest EV technology derived from motorsports duty. What's particularly appealing to some discerning enthusiasts, is the ability to savor their very own Turbo S without costly maintenance. Or, any other potential trouble keeping it alive for future generations to appreciate. 'The Porsche 911 (993) Founders Edition is for those who missed their chance to own an air-cooled Turbo S or those who want to relive it, responsibly,' says Everrati Founder & CEO, Justin Lunny. 'These cars hold stories. They were never just machines; they were memories in motion. But most classics weren't built for the long haul, not without help at least. With this redefined 993, we're giving people a way to preserve that emotional connection and still enjoy the drive, every day. It's the dream garage car you don't just have to admire, you can use it, pass it down, and keep it alive. That's what truly makes this a timeless classic.' There's no telling what emissions standards, parts availability, etc., will look like down the line. This helps alleviate these concerns, and, at the same time, increases interest from EV-focused circles and reduces enthusiasts' carbon footprint along the way.

Honour Newport's past, seize Newport's future

This year is big for the city of Newport. This is our moment to set the foundations for our cultural and economic boom. Our moment to once again show the country that Newport's best days lie ahead of it, not behind it. Newport has a glorious past. Something we should celebrate and remember fondly. From our Roman heritage, the Chartists, steelmaking, TJs and our music scene, to when the city centre was booming with big retail shops. But our world is continuing to change fast. During my first of year leadership, I noticed a common response to how Newport should adapt to this change. For some people, the answer is to go back to the past, to recreate a memory of when Newport was thriving. These memories are to be treasured and celebrated, but if we cling to the past, we will forfeit our present and future. We must act upon and seize on our potential now. The history of the city teaches us this over and over again. Newport has boomed when it led and leaned into previous industrial booms. These booms also meant a surge in the city's population. We are at that point again. Newport is the fastest-growing area in Wales. The 2021 census showed that Newport grew 9.5 per cent between 2011 and 2021, which was nearly double the growth of Cardiff; Wales only grew 1.5 per cent. And this pace of growth is not slowing. A recent report by external consultants estimated that Newport's population would grow 14.2 per cent by 2040, the fastest in the region. In particular, the growth in the under-15s is positive news for the city. Most areas are seeing an aging population. This sector population boom should mean Newport will increasingly become the growth engine for Wales and cement us as an economic powerhouse. However, a population boom is not enough to ensure our prosperity. We must embrace the future to fulfil that potential. We need to be supportive of wealth creators, completely re-engineer the city centre, empower local communities, rethink how a local authority operates as well as welcome and lead technological change, not be scared by it. Newport has always become wealthier based on industry. In the past, it was coal and steel. Now, it leads the way in advanced manufacturing. Nearly every modern electronic device probably has a bit of Newport in it, from a washing machine to a car. At Imperial Park, we have companies building the current and future technologies of the modern world. From AI infrastructure and cloud computing to microchips that make the world tick. We even have a company that builds the machine that builds the microchips, 98 per cent of which are exported. These are highly skilled, high-paying jobs for local people. To fully realise this potential will take persistence, tenaciousness and grit. Something the people of Newport have in spades. There will be ups and downs, setbacks and challenges, but the trajectory is upwards. I, we, the council, can't do this alone. We need the majority of Newportonians to realise the city's potential, support change and not be fearful of the future. There are, and will be, many loud voices, especially on social media, who only sell negativity, depression and blame. That is not a path to success for an individual or a city. Success is based on positivity and fearlessness. We can make this happen if we do not remain locked in by our past. Dimitri Batrouni is leader of Newport City Council.
