Could the Galaxy Z Fold 7 really be the world's thinnest foldable after all?

Hadlee Simons / Android Authority
TL;DR A side-by-side comparison shows that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 may actually be thinner than the Magic V5.
HONOR claims the Magic V5 measures 8.8mm, while the Galaxy Z Fold 7 measures 8.9mm.
The unique way the company measured the Magic V5 may explain the discrepancy.
When Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold 7, it impressed with a thickness of just 8.9mm. This measurement was enough to have it tie with the OPPO Find N5 for the world's thinnest book-style foldable. However, just before Samsung's launch, HONOR stole some of the Galaxy Z Fold 7's thunder by releasing the Magic V5. Thanks to a 0.1mm difference, the Magic V5 was able to snatch the title of world's thinnest for itself. But after some side-by-side comparisons, some are starting to question who the real champion of thinness is.
On X (formerly Twitter), well-known leaker Ice Universe posted a video of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 next to the HONOR Magic V5. In the video, the tipster conducts a test by placing a flat card on top of both phones. Here we can see the card is angled slightly upward toward the Magic V5. When he places his finger down on the edge of the card on the Magic V5 side, we see the card lift up off the Galaxy Z Fold 7. No lift occurs when a finger is placed down on the opposite edge.

There is no accurate measuring tool, but we can still draw a rigorous conclusion: Galaxy Z Fold7 is the thinnest folding mobile phone in the world.I switched the positions of two mobile phones during the test, and the results remained the same, which showed that the factors of… pic.twitter.com/irlNgKOtH0

For further emphasis, the tipster places a ping-pong ball on the card. Regardless of where the ball is placed, it rolls toward the Galaxy Z Fold 7 every time. The same results occur when swapping the positions of the two phones. This suggests that Samsung's foldable may actually be thinner than HONOR's foldable.
So what's going on here? How would this be possible when the Galaxy Z Fold 7 measures 8.9mm and HONOR says its phone measures 8.8mm? It appears the answer could be how HONOR got its measurement.
Spotted by SamMobile, HONOR's global landing page for the Magic V5 admits that the number does not include the inner or outer protective screens. This measurement also doesn't include the raised part of the camera. While it's not uncommon to exclude the camera bump from this measurement, it is unusual to also exclude the protective layers of the display. Not including the protective layers may have given HONOR the leeway it needed to claim the 8.8mm measurement.
In his conclusion, Ice Universe claims that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the true title holder of world's thinnest foldable. With the extra publicity that comes with being known as the slimmest foldable around, it's no surprise that brands are fighting to be king of the hill. However, trying to claim that title by omitting certain measurements isn't exactly a great look.

Chip giant TSMC is the newest member of the $1 trillion market-cap club

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company has vaulted to a trillion-dollar valuation. The chipmaker shot to $1 trillion for the first time last week in trading in Taipei. It reported strong Q2 earnings as AI demand and capex remain high. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is the newest member of an elite club The company's Taiwanese shares surged to a record high on Friday, touching a $1 trillion valuation for the first time, while its US-traded American Depository Receipts were worth about $1.2 trillion. The stock is up almost 50% since hitting a low in April. The latest surge comes after strong second-quarter earnings. Much of TSMC's growth has been fueled by its lucrative niche market. As the primary AI chip supplier to top tech companies, including Apple, Nvidia, and Qualcomm, it has benefited from the robust demand that has transformed the market over the past few years. TSMC's leaders are optimistic that this growth will continue as the company enters the second half of the fiscal year, after stating that they aren't concerned about rising competition. "Our business in the second quarter was supported by continued robust AI and HPC-related demand" said CFO and VP of product Wendell Huang. "Moving into third quarter 2025, we expect our business to be supported by strong demand for our leading-edge process technologies." The company reported year-over-year revenue increase of 38% last quarter. It also showed a 12% revenue increase and 10% net income jump from Q1. The jump to a $1 trillion valuation comes after Nvidia, one of TSMC's top customers, made market history as the first company to reach a $4 trillion valuation earlier this month. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Shares Rise on Strong Outlook. Is It Too Late to Buy the Stock?

Key Points TSMC posted strong Q2 growth, as demand for artificial intelligence (AI) chips continues to surge. While tariff uncertainty remains, the company upped its guidance, given the strong demand for AI chips it is seeing. The company remains one of the best-positioned companies to benefit from the ongoing AI data center build-out. 10 stocks we like better than Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing › Shares of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE: TSM) jumped after the semiconductor contract manufacturer reported strong Q2 results and issued an upbeat outlook. The stock is now up nearly 25% on the year. The company continues to be an artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure winner, as it is the world's leading maker of advanced chips for companies like Nvidia and Apple. Let's take a closer look at TSMC's results to see if the stock has more upside, or whether it's too late to buy the stock. No slowdown in sight With rivals Intel and Samsung struggling, TSMC has established itself as an invaluable part of the semiconductor value chain due to its scale and technological expertise. The company is the clear leader in manufacturing advanced chips, and more and more of its revenue is coming from its leading-edge nodes. Nodes are a reference to the size of how many transistors can be fit on a chip, and the smaller the node, the greater the processing power and efficiency a chip can have. In Q2, nodes 7 nanometers (nm) and under accounted for 74% of its revenue, up from 67% a year ago. Its newest 3-nm technology made up 24% of total wafer revenue, jumping from just 15% a year ago. AI chips were once again the biggest driver of TSMC's revenue growth, with high-performance computing (HPC) accounting for 60% of its revenue in the quarter. HPC revenue climbed 14% sequentially. A year ago, the segment accounted for 52% of the company's revenue. This helped drive a 44% increase in the company's revenue to $30.1 billion. Its earnings per American depositary receipt (ADR) soared 67% to $2.47 from $1.48 a year ago, while its EPS in local currency climbed 61%. TSMC once again saw strong year-over-year gross margin expansion; however, it is expecting to see pressure in the future. Gross margin increased 540 basis points year over year to 58.6%, despite the company seeing a currency headwind and dilution from the start-up of its new fab in Arizona. It expects gross margin to fall to 56.5% in Q3 due to currency and the further ramp-up of its new facilities in the U.S. and Japan. It also expects its non-Taiwanese fabs to negatively impact its gross margins by around 2% to 3% a year and then widen to 3% to 4% a year in the later stages of its build-out. Looking ahead, TSMC forecast Q3 revenue to come in between $31.8 billion and $33 billion, representing about 38% year-over-year growth at the midpoint. It projected its operating margin to range from 45.5% to 47.5%. TSMC raised its full-year revenue forecast, with it now projecting 30% growth, up from prior guidance of "close to the mid-20% range." The company pointed to accelerating AI demand as a key driver, noting that data center orders have strengthened meaningfully even compared to just three months ago. It also cited growing momentum from sovereign AI projects. That's translating into strong demand for its leading-edge 3-nm and 5-nm chip technologies. TSMC said it hasn't seen any change in customer behavior due to tariffs, but noted that the risk remains. The company is currently in the middle of investing $165 billion in advanced semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S. The construction of its second fab in Arizona is already complete, and its first fab is already in high-volume production. It has plans to build six fabs, two advanced packaging facilities, and create an R&D center. Is it too late to buy TSMC stock? While tariff and trade policy concerns regarding semiconductors remain, the simple fact of the matter is that no other foundry in the world has the scale and technological expertise of TSMC. As such, it will continue to manufacture the majority of advanced chips and is one of the best-positioned companies to continue to benefit from the ongoing AI infrastructure build-out. While the company is expecting to see some gross margin pressure due to its overseas expansion, it has also seen strong pricing power, so it could have the ability to surprise to the upside in the coming years in this regard. TSMC also should benefit from the recent change of heart by the U.S. to allow Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices to sell certain chips into China. Meanwhile, TSMC's stock remains attractively valued, trading at a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 26 times based on analysts' 2025 estimates and price/earnings-to-growth ratio (PEG) of around 0.7. Stocks with PEG ratios below 1 are typically considered undervalued. Taken altogether, I think TSMC continues to be positioned as a long-term winner, and that it's not too late to buy the stock. Nio Just Launched a New SUV, and Wall Street's Paying Attention. Should You Buy the EV Stock Here?

Earlier this month, Morgan Stanley reaffirmed its 'Buy' rating on Nio (NIO), with the brokerage firm's $5.90 price target representing about a 30.5% premium to the stock's Monday close. The firm called the Onvo L90 launch a 'major catalyst,' with analyst Tim Hsiao writing, 'With all the pessimism in the price, we think the stock is like a call option" following strong pre-order momentum in Hong Kong. Morgan Stanley argues that the L90 offers 'aggressive specs' at a price point below ¥280,000, giving it an edge over both mid-range and premium rivals like the Li (LI) L9 or AITO M9. With standout features, a spacious interior, and the backing of Nio's expanding battery-swap and tech infrastructure, the L90 could be a game-changer if Onvo can overcome branding and execution hurdles. For now, Morgan Stanley's team sees the low price as a buffer that may help turn investor doubt into fresh demand. About NIO Stock Based in Shanghai, Nio (NIO) is a leading designer and manufacturer of smart electric vehicles (EVs). It offers a range of electric SUVs and sedans, including five and six-seater models, along with innovative power solutions like Power Home, Power Swap, and other charging services. With a market cap of $9.16 billion, NIO stumbled early in 2025, falling to a low of $3.02 by April. However, stronger deliveries and operational gains have fueled a 32.5% rebound over the past month. In terms of valuation, NIO is priced at an enterprise value/sales ratio of 1.21, which is a 9% discount to the sector median of 1.32. This suggests NIO is priced competitively within its sector. Onvo L90: A New Family SUV at an Aggressive Price The Onvo L90 is NIO's newly unveiled three-row electric SUV under its mass-market Onvo sub‑brand. It launched in July 2025 at a starting price of RMB 279,900, including an 85 kWh battery, or RMB 193,900 under its Battery‑as‑a‑Service plan. This aggressive pricing undercuts competitors such as the Li Auto L9 (RMB 409,800) and entry models like the Li L6 and XPeng (XPEV) G9. Despite its value positioning, the L90 boasts premium features: 900V fast charging, an AR head‑up display, adjustable air suspension, an integrated smart fridge, and Level 2+ autonomous aids powered by Nvidia's (NVDA) Orin‑X chip. Its spacious cabin rivals those of higher‑priced six‑seaters like the AITO M9 and BYD (BYDDY) Denza N9. NIO aimed to control costs by reusing existing platforms and drivetrains without sacrificing quality. Preorders hit 30,000–35,000 within days, and NIO is dispatching early units to dealers for market feedback. A five-seat L80 and 400 new sales outlets are slated for late 2025. Record Deliveries Clash with Persistent Losses at NIO NIO managed a strong delivery performance in June, handing over 24,925 vehicles, its second-highest monthly total on record. That pushed Q2 deliveries to 72,056 units, up about 26% year-over-year. For the first half of 2025, the company delivered 114,150 vehicles, a 31% jump compared to the same period last year. Financially, the EV company posted Q1 revenue of $1.66 billion, representing a 21% year-over-year increase, but just shy of analyst estimates near $1.73 billion. Vehicle sales remained the primary revenue driver. Despite this miss, margins improved, with vehicle gross margin rising to 10.2% from 9.2% a year ago. Management reiterated its goal of reaching 20% gross margin for the core NIO brand and 15% for Onvo by late 2025, with profitability expected in Q4. 'We continue to invest in multi-brand expansion and cost efficiencies, and Q2 guidance reflects momentum in deliveries,' said CEO William Li on the earnings call. While free cash flow declined, the company ended the quarter with around $3.5 billion in cash and equivalents, giving it solid financial flexibility heading into the second half of the year. With nine new models planned for 2025 and a target of reaching operating profitability by year-end, NIO appears to be positioning itself for a strong turnaround. What Does Wall Street Think About NIO Stock? Most Wall Street analysts are not as bullish as Morgan Stanley, with the broader consensus rating on the stock at 'Hold.' In fact, even Hsiao, ahead of his bullish endorsement, wrote: 'Although we strongly recognize Onvo L90's advantages in the crowded race, beating market expectations isn't without challenges considering Onvo's unsatisfactory track record of execution and inferior brand awareness, which require extra effort for Onvo to leverage L90 and upcoming L80 to overcome the deficit.' NIO shares are currently trading above the average price target of $4.37, implying little to no expected upside over the next year. However, the 16 analysts in coverage have a wide range of targets, ranging as high as $8.10 - a 79.2% premium from Monday's close - to as low as $3, in line with the April year-to-date bottom.
