Ringgit forecast to trade between 4.24-4.26 vs US dollar next week
Published on: Sat, Jul 12, 2025
By: Bernama Text Size: Kuala Lumpur: The ringgit is expected to remain volatile next week, moving in the range between 4.24 and 4.26 against the US dollar, an analyst said. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid told Bernama that apart from the United States (US) tariff, the next key question is whether the Federal Reserve (Fed) would cut the interest rates. On that note, he said key data points would be the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) for June. Thus far, the inflation rate has been quite manageable during the 90-day pause period. 'Obviously, the full implementation of reciprocal tariffs on August 1 would result in higher inflation, which could lead to the need to keep the Federal Fund Rate (FFR) steady as an ideal policy decision. 'The US dollar index (DXY) has been gradually climbing and therefore, emerging market currencies, including the ringgit, could stay on the low side,' Mohd Afzanizam said. Meanwhile, SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes also said the ringgit is expected to trade within a narrow range ahead of the release of the US CPI next week, a key economic event likely to shape market direction and the Fed policy expectations. The upcoming US inflation report, due Tuesday, would be closely watched by financial markets as it could offer clear signals on the path of interest rates, he said. Innes said markets are particularly focused on the core CPI month-on-month figure, with 0.3 per cent seen as the critical threshold. 'A softer-than-expected reading could revive hopes for a September rate cut by the Fed, potentially leading to a pullback in the US dollar and offering the ringgit some relief,' Innes said. However, he cautioned that a stronger print, particularly at 0.4 per cent or higher, would likely shift market expectations toward a more hawkish Fed, sparking renewed dollar strength. 'In that scenario, the US dollar-ringgit pair could climb toward 4.2700, although any initial spike may be short-lived if profit-taking emerges,' he noted. He projected the ringgit to trade within a tactical range of 4.2400 to 4.2650, with market positioning expected to tighten further. 'For now, the ringgit remains a passenger in a vehicle driven by US macro outcomes -- not a driver in its own right,' Innes added. On a Friday-to-Friday basis, the ringgit ended the week lower against the greenback, closing at 4.2475/2525 from 4.2180/2260 previously. The local note traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. The ringgit appreciated vis-a-vis the Japanese yen to 2.8893/8929 from 2.9225/9282, and increased against the British pound to 5.7524/7592 from 5.7601/7710 last Friday. However, it marginally fell versus the euro to 4.9679/9737 from 4.9675/9770 at the end of last week. Against ASEAN currencies, the ringgit was traded lower. The local note was down against the Singapore dollar to 3.3186/3228 from 3.3114/3182, and narrowed versus the Indonesian rupiah to 261.8/262.3 from 260.6/261.2 previously. It weakened versus the Thai baht to 13.0668/0886 from 13.0302/0609 and declined against the Philippine peso at 7.52/7.53 from 7.47/7.49 on last Friday. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Tanjung Manis Fishing Safari added to Sarawak tourism calendar from 2026
MUKAH: The Tanjung Manis Fishing Safari will be officially included in Sarawak's tourism calendar starting next year. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this move aims to position the event as a major attraction for international anglers. He highlighted the event's role in strengthening Tanjung Manis' contribution to the state's second wave of economic development. 'Recognition at the state level will enable more structured planning and at the same time allow international participants to prepare earlier,' he said. Abang Johari spoke at the closing ceremony of the Tanjung Manis Fishing Safari at the Tanjung Manis Express Terminal. He noted that fishing, golf, and marathons could elevate Tanjung Manis' global profile. The state government has invested RM70 million in artificial reefs from Telok Melano to Lawas. These reefs aim to boost fish breeding and protect local waters from foreign trawlers. Abang Johari stressed the need for stricter enforcement and Sarawak Coast Guard support to safeguard marine resources. Tanjung Manis will be a key focus in Sarawak's second-wave development, integrating food security, tourism, and carbon economy initiatives. Plans include expanding the local airport to accommodate larger aircraft. Belawai will be developed as a coastal tourism hub with hotels, homestays, and a golf course. Ecotourism will also be strengthened to attract more visitors. From next year, AirBorneo will operate flights bringing tourists from Korea and Japan. This is expected to boost the local economy through food, cultural, and nature-based tourism. A total of 146 anglers participated in the safari, competing in deep-sea and coastal fishing categories. - Bernama

He said this is in line with efforts to strengthen Tanjung Manis' role in the second wave of the state's economic development. 'Recognition at the state level will enable more structured planning and at the same time allow international participants to prepare earlier,' he said when speaking at the closing ceremony of the Tanjung Manis Fishing Safari at the Tanjung Manis Express Terminal today. According to him, activities such as fishing, golf and marathons have the potential to put Tanjung Manis on the world map. He said the state government has invested RM70 million in the construction of artificial reefs from Telok Melano to Lawas to stimulate fish breeding and protect local waters from encroachment by foreign trawlers. JPNIN Targeting 15 New RTPs In Melaka By Year-end
GENERAL JASIN, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- The Melaka branch of the Department of National Unity and National Integration (JPNIN) aims to establish 15 Progressive Rukun Tetangga bases (RTPs) in the state to strengthen the economy of the communities by end of this year. Its director Intan Suhana Yusoff said as of last year, six RTPs were formed, namely the Kampung Bukit Nibong RTP and the Bukit Rambai RTP in Melaka Tengah district; Kampung Gadek RTP and the Taman Permatang Indah RTP in Alor Gajah as well as the Kampung Berangan Enam RTP and the Felda Kemendor RTP in Jasin. "This year, nine RTPs will be established and six of them have been approved, namely the Taman Tambak Paya RTP, Taman Paya Rumput Jaya RTP, Banda Hilir RTP, Taman Mutiara/Sutera RTP, Kampung Pengkalan Balak RTP and Taman Bemban Utama RTP. "RTPs carry out economic activities, including agriculture such as lemongrass and mushroom cultivation as well as catfish farming," she told Bernama here today. She was speaking after the Kampung Berangan Enam 2025 Rukun Tetangga (KRT) 'Sentuhan Perpaduan dan Aspirasi Digital' ceremony which was also attended by Merlimau assemblyman Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, who is also the State Rural Development, Agriculture and Food Security Committee chairman. Intan Suhana said this year, the selection of the RTPs was based on their achievements in mobilising economic activities based on available resources without relying entirely on government allocations or assistance, thus setting an example for other KRTs in their efforts to raise the economic status of members and the local community. Meanwhile, she said RTPs are also encouraged to use artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to increase production and make the RTPs more progressive, competitive and resilient in line with the latest technological developments. She said that so far, two RTPs in Melaka, the Kampung Berangan Enam RTP (agricultural activities) and Kampung Gadek RTP (poultry farming) have used IoT technology in collaboration with the Bukit Beruang Community College and the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA). "It is part of the Ministry of National Unity's vision for every RTP established to mobilise its economic sector with the latest technology such as IoT and AI.
