Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday congratulated Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on the landmark peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, hailing the development as a historic turning point for the South Caucasus and a gateway to regional prosperity.
The prime minister received a telephone call from President Aliyev in which the two leaders discussed the peace accord, bilateral relations, and regional connectivity prospects, his office said in an official handout.
During the "warm and cordial" conversation, Shehbaz lauded Aliyev's "visionary role" in ending the decades-long conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, describing it as "a mutually beneficial end to one of the most intractable disputes in the region."
He said the peace agreement would "usher in a new era of stability and economic opportunity for the Caucasus." The prime minister also commended the role of US President Donald Trump in facilitating the deal.
Azerbaijan and Armenia have fought bitter wars over Nagorno-Karabakh — a mountainous Azerbaijani region — first in the early 1990s after the collapse of the former Soviet Union and again in 2020. Azerbaijan regained territory in a rapid 24-hour offensive in September 2023.
This prompted fresh diplomatic efforts to secure lasting peace. The US-brokered accord aims to normalise ties between the two countries, paving the way for expanded trade, transport, and energy cooperation after decades of hostility.
Aliyev expressed deep gratitude for Pakistan's "longstanding and consistent" support for Azerbaijan's position on the Nagorno-Karabakh issue. "It has always been a duty for the people of Pakistan to extend their support to their Azerbaijani brothers and sisters," Shehbaz said.
Aliyev emphasised that a stable South Caucasus could become a hub of connectivity linking Pakistan with Central Asia, offering new avenues for trade and cooperation. Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the "positive trajectory" of bilateral relations, particularly in trade and investment.
Recalling their recent meetings in Lachin and Khankendi, Shehbaz reiterated his invitation for President Aliyev to undertake an official visit to Pakistan. The two leaders are also expected to meet on the sidelines of the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin.
In a post on X after the conversation, Shehbaz wrote: "I conveyed warm felicitations to him and the people of Azerbaijan on the historic Azerbaijan-Armenia Peace Agreement We also reviewed the trajectory of bilateral relations and reaffirmed our commitment to continue with this positive momentum."
He said Pakistan looked forward to continuing high-level engagements with Azerbaijan in the coming days.

Banking gains offset losses as PSX holds 147,000 level

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) closed marginally higher on Tuesday as it entered a consolidation phase, with the benchmark KSE-100 index gaining 75.48 points, or 0.05%, to settle at 147,005.32. Analysts noted that investors adopted a cautious stance amid mixed sentiment, selective buying, and profit-taking. Trading volumes recorded an uptick, supported by gains in banking stocks, while weakness in the fertiliser and energy sectors capped overall gains. Arif Habib Limited (AHL) Deputy Head of Trading Ali Najib said the KSE-100 index floated in both directions during the session before closing slightly positive, maintaining the key 147,000 level. 'Mixed sentiment was observed during trading hours, with investors opting for some switching and profit-taking,' he said. On the news front, Pakistan and US officials were finalising details of a trade deal, while Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb hinted at major US investments across various sectors. Meanwhile, Barrick Mining sought $3.5 billion from global lenders, including US-backed institutions, for the development of the Reko Diq copper and gold project. Among individual movers, Bank Alfalah, HBL, Systems Limited, Meezan Bank and National Foods added 417 points to the index on buying interest. Conversely, Fauji Fertiliser Company, Mari Petroleum, Oil and Gas Development Company, Pakistan State Oil and Bank AL Habib collectively lost 527 points. 'Going forward, progress on circular debt resolution could further fuel upward momentum. That said, some consolidation or a mild correction remains possible. In case of a pullback, 145,000 is expected to serve as the first support, followed by 143,000, while 150,000 stands as the next key resistance,' Najib added. Overall, trading volumes rose to 691.7 million shares from Monday's 611.2 million, while the traded value increased to Rs44.6 billion from Rs44 billion in the previous session. Shares of 482 companies were traded. Of these, 208 closed higher, 242 declined and 32 remained unchanged. Yousuf Weaving Mills was the volume leader with 46.3 million shares, rising by Rs1 to close at Rs6.09.

India's stock benchmarks inch lower ahead of inflation data

Indian equity benchmarks inched lower on Tuesday as a drop in financials weighed ahead of key U.S. and domestic inflation readings. The Nifty 50 fell 0.4% to 24,487.4 points and the BSE Sensex shed 0.46% to 80,235.59. Investors await U.S. CPI data due later in the day which will guide the Federal Reserve's rate-cut path. Lower U.S. rates typically boost the appeal of emerging market equities, including India, as yields on U.S. Treasuries fall. Eight of the 16 major sectors logged gains. The broader small-caps were flat, while mid-caps slipped 0.3%. Financials, which gained 0.9% in the previous session, reversed course and fell 1% on Tuesday. IT rose 0.4%, on the back of a U.S.-China tariff truce extension that averts triple-digit duties that is expected to shield U.S. growth, curb inflation risks, and support corporate discretionary spending, including on technology. Pharma advanced 0.7%, buoyed by strong results from Abbott India and Alkem Laboratories. The sector, like IT, counts the U.S. as a key market. Indian shares gain ahead of US-Russia talks; SBI, Tata Motors rise post earnings Investors also await India's July retail inflation data, due after market hours, with a Reuters poll forecasting an eight-year low of 1.76% on cooling food prices. The modest sized drop in benchmark indexes 'reflects reluctance among investors to make significant moves ahead of key inflation data, while uncertainty also lingers with a second round of tariff hikes scheduled later this month,' said Devarsh Vakil, head of prime research at HDFC Securities. Among stocks, Marksans Pharma and Astral fell 11.1% and 8.1% after reporting weaker quarterly profits. Bata India dropped 4% after quarterly profit declined due to sluggish footwear sales and higher costs. Yatra Online extended its post-results surge, jumping after a fourfold rise in profit prompted price target hikes from Investec and Antique Stock Broking.

Trump to host South Korean president Aug 25: Seoul

SEOUL: US President Donald Trump will host his South Korean counterpart on August 25 to hammer out details of their recent trade deal and discuss chips, shipbuilding and other topics, Seoul said Tuesday. In return for cutting threatened tariffs of 25 percent to 15 percent, Trump said on July 31 that South Korea would 'give' to the United States $350 billion for investments and buy $100 billion of energy products. Trump also said that South Korea agreed to invest an additional 'large sum of money', the level of which would be announced when President Lee Jae Myung visits the White House. Lee's office said that the meeting would be about developing the alliance into a 'future-oriented comprehensive strategic partnership' in response to the evolving global security and economic environment. Trump and Lee will discuss cooperation 'in manufacturing sectors such as semiconductors, batteries and shipbuilding, as well as in economic security partnerships covering advanced technologies, critical minerals and other areas,' spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said. South Korea says timing of US tariff cut on autos not decided South Korean officials have said that Seoul's commitment to help the United States revive its shipbuilding industry was instrumental in reaching the trade deal. South Korea's shipbuilding industry is the world's second-largest following China, with the United States lagging far behind both. Washington is also increasingly looking to overseas shipyards to strengthen its Asia-Pacific military operations, positioning South Korea as a key defence partner. In 2024, Hanwha Ocean, one of South Korea's largest shipbuilders, became the first non-US company authorised to conduct dry-dock maintenance on a US Navy vessel. The leaders' summit will be their first since Lee's election in June, which followed the impeachment of his predecessor after he declared martial law.
