Hill faces two counts of murder after his girlfriend, Nompumelelo Gamede (21), and sister, Antoinette Hill (23), were set alight on July 23, allegedly by him. They later died in hospital.
According to Gamede's father, the accused allegedly doused petrol on his daughter after a heated argument the couple had, together with Hill, who reportedly tried to intervene, and set them alight, leaving them locked in a room to burn.
Gamede's family reacted to the court proceedings, saying: 'We wish to see the case being finalised sooner because our daughter was brutally killed. We wish for justice to be served and soon.'

Teen gets five years behind bars for infrastructure tampering

Teen gets five years behind bars for infrastructure tampering A 19-year-old will spend the next five years behind bars after being found guilty of tampering with municipal infrastructure. The Pretoria Magistrate's Court passed the sentence down on July 30. Lehlogonolo Bodida Leboho was caught by the crime prevention unit while stripping electricity pipes on the corner of Helen Joseph and Paul Kruger streets on September 20, 2024. A team under the command of Captain Mogotsi, consisting of Sergeant Dipou Tjiyane and Constable Maswahlisa Phalane, were busy with their daily patrols when they caught the culprit red-handed, and immediately arrested him. 'Vandalism of public infrastructure remains one of the major problems in the inner city, and the police, along with other law enforcement agencies, are working tirelessly to monitor and eliminate such criminal conduct,' said spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise. ALSO READ: Hercules cable theft suspects arrested after alert resident tips off police 'This verdict comes after careful consideration and evidence presented by the investigating officer, Sergeant Frans Mahlangu, who has been working to ensure that the suspect faces the might of the law,' Nkhumise added. Pretoria Central SAPS station commander, Brigadier Hlengane Gibin Mashaba, welcomed the verdict and thanked his fellow officers for a job well done and for their adherence to the court's calls to take a stand and give testimony. 'This will send out a strong message to those who commit such crimes, and the station will be working hard to ensure that the inner city retains its status as a safe and secure environment for all who work and reside in it,' Mashaba said. To ensure the precinct does not become a haven and a playground for vandalism, the community is urged to report any criminal activities. Residents can anonymously report to the Crime Stop helpline 08600 10111, dial 112 on any network provider, then follow the prompts or use the MySAPS app or directly call the station at 012 353 4000. Video: Manhunt for fugitive after Roodepoort cops killed in CBD

Police are urging the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of Zimbabwean national Jabulani Moyo after a fatal shooting of two police officers in the Roodepoort CBD this morning. According to Roodepoort Record, provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that a manhunt has been launched for the suspect, who is believed to have shot and killed the officers while they were transporting him back to prison from the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court after he appeared in connection with a 2023 business robbery. Roodepoort Record earlier reported that, according to Masondo, one of the officers was based at Roodepoort Police Station and the other at Florida, and that they collected the suspect from a prison in Boksburg. 'The two police officers, a sergeant and a warrant officer, were shot at and disarmed. The sergeant was certified dead on the crime scene, while the warrant officer was taken to hospital, where he was certified dead on arrival. 'Moyo was seen driving the police vehicle that was later found abandoned a few kilometres from the crime scene.' Police are appealing to anyone with information that can assist in the investigation or help in the apprehension of the suspect to contact the nearest police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Information can also be given anonymously via the MySAPS app, which can be downloaded to any smartphone. 'We do not yet know if anyone else was involved in the shooting, but we can confirm that both officers' firearms are missing,' Masondo said earlier. KwaMakhutha gets mobile police station

KWAMAKHUTHA is one of four areas in KwaZulu-Natal that have been equipped with mobile police stations as part of an ongoing initiative to bolster resources in the fight against crime. Also read: Premier condemns gruesome murder near KwaMakhutha KZN Premier Thami Ntuli, who also serves as the province's MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Liaison, officially handed over new mobile units at a ceremony in Mayville on August 6. KwaMakhutha, Inanda, Bulwer, and KwaMbomambi have been identified as crime hotspots, and the newly deployed mobile satellite police stations are expected to play a strategic role in enhancing police visibility and accessibility in these areas. The KwaMakhutha policing precinct covers a large area and has long been affected by persistent violent crimes, many of which remain unsolved. Each mobile unit, valued at R1.7m, is fully equipped with a holding cell, a toilet, an office, and a kitchenette. Ntuli said the rollout of mobile stations was a direct response to concerns raised by community members who cited the lack of nearby police infrastructure, which often forced them to travel long distances to seek assistance. Also read: Learners killed in KwaMakhutha 'We want to see measurable crime prevention interventions in our province to ensure that we defeat the scourge of crime. We are working around the clock to establish functional community safety structures in our province to augment the work of law enforcement agencies,' said Ntuli. He noted that last year, the department handed over 36 vehicles to the police to close the gap created by resource shortages. Ntuli also appealed to the private sector to support voluntary community crime-fighting structures financially to help intensify the fight against crime.
