Bay FC expect Oracle Park match to break U.S. women's pro sports attendance record

When Bay FC host the Washington Spirit on Saturday at Oracle Park, it will mark the first women's sporting event at the storied ballpark since it opened in 2000. Now they're set to make more history.
The team said it has sold more than 35,000 tickets for Saturday's match and expects to topple the U.S. women's pro sports attendance record, which was set last year when the Chicago Red Stars hosted Bay FC at Wrigley Field in front of 35,038.
With a capacity of 40,260 at Oracle Park, Saturday's match has the opportunity to shatter that record.
'We are incredibly proud of what this match means for Bay FC, the Bay Area, and for the NWSL,' said Bay FC CEO Brady Stewart in the release. 'Everyone who is at Oracle Park on Saturday has the chance to be a part of history and together show the world what's possible in women's sports.'
Nebraska volleyball holds the overall attendance world record for a women's sporting event of 92,003, set in August 2023 when the Cornhuskers hosted Omaha at Memorial Stadium. That broke the previous U.S. mark set in 1999 when 90,185 watched Brandi Chastain — a founder of Bay FC — score the winning penalty kick over China in the Women's World Cup final at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
Of the top 50 most attended women's pro games, the NWSL represents 48 spots, according to the news release.
'This is a landmark moment not just for Bay FC or the NWSL, but for the future of women's professional sports in the United States,' said NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman. 'Breaking the league's single-match attendance record at a venue as iconic as Oracle Park is a testament to the growing demand, passion and momentum behind our league.'
The 2025 NWSL championship game will be held on Nov. 22 at PayPal Park.
Briefly: In line with their mission to inspire the next generation of professional soccer players, Bay FC announced the launch of a new, all-girls youth soccer league on Tuesday.
According to the news release, the league intends to expand opportunities for young athletes to play soccer, focusing particularly on communities that have historically faced barriers to sports participation.

Mexico star Ovalle reportedly heading for Orlando Pride in world-record transfer

Mexico star Lizbeth Ovalle is reportedly heading to the Orlando Pride in a world-record transfer from Tigres. Reports out of Mexico on Monday stated that the 25-year-old was heading to the NWSL champions in a deal worth as much as $2 million. That would smash the current world record of £1 million ($1.3m), which was set when Canada international Olivia Smith joined Arsenal from Liverpool last month. ESPN later reported that Ovalle was joining for a fee of $1.5m, which would still be a world record. According to AS Mexico, Orlando managed to outbid the Washington Spirit and Barcelona to secure Ovalle's services. Ovalle has spent her entire career with Tigres, where she has won six Liga MX Femenil titles. She is the club's all-time leading scorer with 136 goals. The midfielder went viral earlier this year after she scored an absurd reverse scorpion kick that many have tipped as a Puskás Award candidate. Ovalle has earned more than 50 caps with Mexico, scoring a memorable goal against the U.S. women's national team in a 2-0 win in last year's W Gold Cup. The midfielder will be a major boost for a Pride side that has faltered some in 2025 after winning a NWSL Shield and NWSL championship double last year. Orlando is currently third in the NWSL table with a 8W-4D-4L record, 12 points back of first-place Kansas City.

USC football countdown to kickoff—Matt Leinart in focus

The countdown to USC's 2025 football season is officially on! The Trojans kick off their new campaign 11 days from today. You need something to help you while away the days and hours in the spring and summer. This is one way to do so. In this new series, countdown to kickoff, we will be counting down the days by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number. Today, we look at USC Heisman Trophy quarterback Matt Leinart. Position: Quarterback Years played at USC: 2001-2005 Career highlights: After redshirting in 2001 and serving as a backup behind Heisman winner Carson Palmer in 2002, Leinart won USC's starting quarterback job as a redshirt sophomore in 2003. His first start came in the road at Auburn, and he threw a touchdown on his first career pass attempt as he led the Trojans to a dominant 23-0 victory. Over the next three years, Leinart led USC to an incredible 37-2 record. The Trojans won the 2003 and 2004 national championships, giving Leinart as many national titles in his college career as losses. In 2005, they came up one game short of winning a third consecutive title, falling to Texas in an instant classic Rose Bowl. Leinart was named a first-team All-American and a Heisman finalist in both 2004 and 2005. In 2004, he won the Heisman Trophy, becoming the second USC quarterback to take home the honor in three years. He finished his time in Cardinal and Gold as USC's all-time leader in touchdown passes and No. 2 in passing yards—although he was later passed by Matt Barkley in both categories. After USC: The Arizona Cardinals selected Leinart with the 10th overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft. Although he spent seven years in the league, Leinart's NFL career is widely viewed as a disappointment, as he never lived up to the hype that surrounded him coming out of USC. He finished his time in the league with a 57.1 completion percentage and 15 touchdown passes to 21 interceptions while spending time with Arizona, the Houston Texans, and the Arizona Cardinals. Since retiring from football, Leinart has been a regular presence around the Trojans program, serving as a mentor to numerous other USC quarterbacks. He also works as an analyst on Fox Sports's Big Noon Kickoff college football pregame show.
