Kichcha Sudeep announces K47: I feel the need to bring out a film this year

India Today10-07-2025
Kichcha Sudeep officially announced his 47th film, tentatively titled 'K47'. The project, which went on floors on July 7 in Chennai, is being helmed by 'Max' director Vijay Kartikeyan and backed by Tamil banner Sathya Jyothi Films. Billed as a high-octane action thriller, the film is targeting a December 25, 2025 release. The announcement came as a surprise for fans, as Sudeep has been busy shooting for his fantasy epic 'Billa Ranga Baasha' with Anup Bhandari. ''Billa Ranga Baasha' is a massive film with elaborate sets and world-building—it will take time. But in between, I wanted to give a film this year, and we hope 'K47' will be shot quickly. The goal is to release it by December 25 this year. This might seem impossible, but we'll give it everything. Given the current uncertainty in Kannada cinema, I feel the need to bring out a film this year,' he said.advertisement
The film marks Sudeep's second collaboration with Vijay Kartikeyan, who made his Kannada debut with the action thriller 'Max'. While there was speculation that 'K47' would be a follow-up to that film, Sudeep was quick to clarify that it is a standalone story. 'After a film like 'Max' succeeds, there's always the urge to create a franchise. But 'K47' features a completely different character and tone. It's definitely not 'Max 2'. We didn't want to force that connection.'

Sudeep also addressed rumours that filmmaker Cheran was supposed to direct the project. While confirming early discussions, he said the collaboration didn't move forward. 'Cheran is a wonderful storyteller, and I truly admire his work. We did collaborate, but the story just didn't align with where I am or the uncertainty of the Kannada industry. It didn't feel like a story for today's times. Can I attempt something like 'My Autograph' now? Honestly, I feel it would be too complicated for today's landscape.'Ajaneesh Loknath will compose the music for the film. Veteran producer TG Thyagarajan, who last produced a Kannada film in 1986 called 'Sathya Jyothi', starring Dr Vishnuvardhan, is making his return to the industry with this project. 'Sudeep is one of my favourite actors, and we're thrilled to return with 'K47',' he said. He also revealed that past efforts to collaborate with Shivarajkumar and Puneeth Rajkumar didn't materialise.Addressing criticism around working with non-Kannada banners, Sudeep was candid. 'Why would I distance myself from Kannada producers? That's not true at all. Instead of asking me, ask why the big production houses here aren't approaching with stories. Whoever brings a good story, I'll hold their hand,' said the 'Eega' actor. With his renewed commitment to 'Bigg Boss Kannada', shoots of the ambitious 'Billa Ranga Baasha' underway, and the newly announced 'K47' project, fans can expect a packed schedule from the star for the rest of the year.- Ends

Rajnikanth's ‘Coolie' beats Kamal Haasan's ‘Vikram: to become 9th biggest Tamil film in North America with just premiere day numbers

Rajinikanth's 'Coolie,' directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has shattered North American box office records, earning an estimated USD 2.9 million on its premiere day. This impressive opening has already propelled 'Coolie' to become the 9th biggest Tamil grosser ever in North America, surpassing Kamal Haasan's 'Vikram' and two other Rajinikanth films. Superstar Rajinikanth has once again proved his box office dominance, this time in spectacular fashion with the release of Coolie. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj , the much-anticipated action drama has shattered records on its very first day in North America, earning an estimated USD 2.9 million from its premiere day shows alone as per distributor Prathyangira Cinemas. What makes this number remarkable is not just the sheer scale of the opening but the fact that Coolie has already become the 9th biggest Tamil grosser ever in North America beating Kamal Haasan 's Vikram ( ( USD 2.84 million) coincidentally also directed by Lokesh Kanagraj . With these numbers Rajinikanth was not only able to dethrone Vikram but also went passed his other two films Vettiyan ( USD 2.83 million ) and Petta ( USD 2.51 million) While, Vikram, Petta and Vettaiyan achieved their totals over several weeks of play, Coolie has managed to match or surpass those numbers within hours. The performance r underlines the unprecedented pre-release buzz around the film, driven by the high-profile pairing of Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj. The latter is one of Tamil cinema's most sought-after directors, and his collaboration with the Superstar for the first time had already generated a level of anticipation that translated directly into massive advance bookings. Given that Coolie's opening day is not yet over, the film is well on track to break into the top 10 biggest Tamil films in North America before the day concludes. In fact, early forecasts suggest that by the time full day-one figures are tallied, Coolie could land in the 8th position on the all-time list. This kind of start all but guarantees that Coolie will be a dominant force in the coming days. If the positive audience reception matches the hype and early social media chatter indicates it does the film could aim for an even higher rank, possibly challenging the top five Tamil grossers in the market.

‘Coolie' review: Rajinikanth survives Lokesh Kanagaraj's overloaded and tacky ‘Coolie'

Lokesh Kanagaraj's Coolie stars the ageless, tireless and boundless Rajinikanth as a former dock union leader with a messiah complex. Coolie, released in Tamil, Hindi and other languages, revolves around the conflict between Deva (Rajinikanth), the smuggler Simon (Nagarjuna) and Simon's savage enforcer Dayal (Soubin Shahir). Deva is minding his own business, being a killjoy at the chummery he runs by forcing the residents to abjure liquor. But Deva is no Gandhian, as is revealed when his friend Rajasekhar (Sathyaraj) is killed and Rajasekhar's daughter Preethi (Shruti Haasan) needs protection. Rajsekhar has invented a 'mobile cremator', an electric chair that instantly does the work, and is very useful to Dayal. Since he is apparently the only person on the planet who can operate the gewgaw, his death troubles Dayal a great deal. Deva calls Rajasekhar his best friend but Deva has somehow been kept out of this ash-strewn phase. After Rajasekhar's death, Deva returns to his brutal ways. Written by Kanagaraj and Chandra Anbhazhagan, the 168-minute film has an overdose of gory, nails-driven-into-flesh brand of violence to compensate for its cliche-ridden, contrived plot. Kanagaraj hopes that the brain that isn't yet jaded by visuals of gruesome torture won't start thinking about the holes in the plotting. For safety, Rajinikanth is surrounded by actors who represent each of the country's major film industries. Apart from Nagarjuna (Telugu) and Shahir (Malayalam), Bollywood's Aamir Khan plays Dahaa, a bulked-up gangster. Kannada star Upendra plays Kaleesha, Deva's old buddy. One of the film's themes is that people aren't who they claim to be. This barely works out for Deva, since Rajinikanth has played this kind of mystery man before, but it does for a couple hiding in plain sight. The twist concerning Dayal and the character played by Rachita Ram is the most novel idea in the film. Kanagaraj does badly by the female characters yet again, with Preethi constantly in danger of being raped and not too bright either. The attention is firmly on Rajinikanth, playing the same-old hero with flexible morals with unbridled enthusiasm. Shahir is the film's scene-stealer, memorably capturing Dayal's horridness and dancing skills. Play
