Kieran Tierney tackles Brendan Rodgers Celtic contract countdown as he spots clear sign boss' 'drive' is still there

Daily Record2 days ago
The Parkhead star jumped at the chance to be reunited with his former gaffer and he has high hopes for the coming season
Kieran Tierney insists Brendan Rodgers is as driven as ever and won't be distracted by contract countdown talk.

The Celtic boss has entered the final year of his current Hoops deal and is remaining tight-lipped about his long-term plans.

Tierney admitted he's thrilled to be hooking up with his old gaffer again – and he's seen no signs Rodgers is winding down to an exit.

The Irishman was roaring on the touchline in Wednesday night's friendly win against Sporting Lisbon and charged up for Saturday's bounce game with Newcastle United at Celtic Park.
Tierney is adamant there are no fears about the manager's motivation heading towards the new season.
He said: "I don't think he'll bother too much about the kind of outside noise.

'He'll just get on with his job because he knows he's got a job to do, and as his players, we've got a job to do.
"We need to do it to the best of our ability, and that takes hard work and commitment every single day, no days off and just being at it every day.
'I think with the captain that we've got, it's perfect having Callum and the manager as well together. It's a perfect combination.

'It's amazing how much the manager actually works, and what the effort he puts in.
'We saw the benefits of it the other night.
'I think we played really well the other night, some good passages of play against a top team.

'It just shows you how passionate he is that you can still see him shouting and wanting more. And I think you need that if you are going to win these trophies and that, you need to be 100 per cent all the time.
'Pre-season friendly, whether it's Champions League qualifier, Scottish Cup, League, you need to be on it every single day, even in training. You need to be on it and the manager makes sure that we are.
'He's got that, it's his drive.'

Rodgers played a big role in bringing Tierney back to Celtic with fans fevered about the prospect of a second coming after the pair were snapped together at a dinner last year.
The full back said: "I knew these pictures would come out! It's massive. I've always kept in contact with him. He always texts me in the good times and the bad times throughout my career, he gave me a phone call.

'I'm buzzing to be back with the gaffer. I loved my time under him before. We were successful together. He got the best out of me and it's a joy to work with and I'm delighted to be back with him.'
Tierney is determined to put his injury problems behind him but he insists he has nothing to prove regarding his fitness.
He said: 'No, nothing, I know how much I work professionally myself, on my body, on my recovery, being as ready as I can be for games.

'I'm not here to prove anything, I'm just here to do the best for Celtic and see where it goes.
'I know how much I focus on my body, my recovery, and doing everything I can to be in the best possible shape that I can be, so that's all I can think about.
'I can't sit and worry about what ifs or anything. I think what can I do just to be in the best condition that I can be in.'

Meanwhile striker Shin Yamada is expected to rubber stamp a four-year deal over the weekend while Rodgers is still on the hunt for new faces.
Royal Antwerp winger Michel-Ange Balikwisha remains high on the wishlist with the Belgians ready to lower their £5m demands while Celts are cool on talk in Romania over a move for Cluj hitman Louis Munteanu, with the 25-year-old being tracked by teams in France.
Celts are set to step up their pre-season plans against Newcastle today and Tierney added: "I think always when there's a Scottish-English team playing each other, the atmosphere is going to be good, there's always going to be a bit of rivalry there.
'It's a confidence builder as well. But also it is important for the fitness side of things to get boys sharp and get boys ready, give everyone minutes and give people a chance to impress.'

Andrej Bacanin makes Celtic transfer intentions clear amid Rangers claim as direct link with Lennon Miller emerges

The 18-year-old rising Serbian midfielder is expected to leave current club Cukaricki in the next 10 days and the Premiership champions are keen In-demand Andrej Bacanin has added fuel to reported interest in Celtic after the rising star made a beeline for the Premiership champions on social media. ‌ The 18-year-old rising Serbian midfielder is expected to leave current club Cukaricki in the next 10 days with the club's sporting director Vladimir Matijašević revealing both Brendan Rodgers' side and Rangers had phoned about Bacanin. ‌ But it appears Bacanin only has eyes for Celtic as he started following the Premiership champions on Instagram after Cukaricki had received a call from Glasgow's east end. ‌ Matijašević - speaking to the Serbian media – said: He stated: "There is a lot of interest in our young players, and the current focus is on the transfer of Andrej Bačanin. He attracted the attention of numerous clubs with his performances for our team last season, as well as for the Serbian national team at his age. "We had calls from Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers, Ajax, Udinese, and some other teams are interested... It is possible that other options will emerge, and I expect the transfer to be completed in the next 10 days. I expect this to be another big exit transfer for Čukarički, which would cover our club's budget." And Celtic's interest in Bacanin comes with the versatile star ranking similarly to Scottish starlet Lennon Miller in a host of key categories - with DataMB ranking both inside the top six midfielders in their age range when it comes to key passes in the final third. ‌ Rodgers has been a long-time admirer of the Motherwell standout, however, it appears Miller has his heart set on a move abroad. And that's where Bacanin comes in as he is ranked similarly to Miller and Olympiacos prodigy Christos Mouzakitis You can get all the news you need on our dedicated Celtic page, and sign up to our newsletters to make sure you never miss a beat throughout the season. Rangers Judgement Day gets brutally honest Jury verdict as the hammer comes down on Champions League chances

It's a huge week for Gers and Hibs in Europe while Celtic are getting set to ramp up their summer recruitment drive What should Rangers fans expect from their side against Panathinaikos this week? KEITH JACKSON: A difficult 90 minutes. Russell Martin and his Rangers squad are the definition of a work in progress. This double header against the Greeks feels all a bit like too much too soon. ‌ CRAIG SWAN: Hard to say what they can expect. But what they need to see is a solid base and some attacking flair. ‌ MICHAEL GANNON: Not much, to be brutally honest. This tie has come way too early for Russell Martin and if they can go to Greece in with a shout it will be a decent start. ‌ GAVIN BERRY: Who knows? It's fascinating. The bookies have Rangers as big favourites with Panathinaikos as big as 3/1 but, other than the obvious home advantage, how can they be so sure? So much of the work has gone on away from the public so fans might be in for a pleasant surprise. It's hugely intriguing. What are the big decisions for Rangers boss Russell Martin? KEITH JACKSON: He's got major decisions all over the pitch. Will Jack Butland start in goal? Is skipper James Tavernier his first pick right back? Does he fancy John Souttar in defence? And Danilo, Dessers or Igamane leading the line? The new boss has his work cut out. CRAIG SWAN: His decision on the goalkeeper and the strikers is going to be fascinating. ‌ MICHAEL GANNON: It looks like Max Aarons will get the nod at left back but it's who plays in front of him that could be a debate. It might be time for Oscar Cortes to grab his chance and Danilo should be let loose up top. GAVIN BERRY: Who to play out on the left if Thelo Aasgaard doesn't make it. Will he go for Nedim Bajrami, Oscar Cortes or even Kieran Dowell? Outwith that he doesn't have a huge amount of dilemmas. Has Hayato Inamura saved Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers the hassle of signing back up for Kieran Tierney? KEITH JACKSON: Perhaps but probably not. Rodgers is coming across a little prickly over the recruitment policy which has been rolled out so far this summer. He'll want to have his own finger prints on the next phase of signings and another left back may still be on the cards. ‌ CRAIG SWAN: You do not gauge a thing on pre-season games. The answer to that comes after some competitive games. MICHAEL GANNON: Inamura has been a pleasant surprise for Celtic fans – and maybe even Brendan Rodgers. He didn't look out of place against Newcastle and in previous friendlies. It might be a case of starting the season and seeing how he copes. Celtic have time and left back isn't the main priority. ‌ GAVIN BERRY: After Brendan Rodgers played the Japanese recruit down a bit after his arrival, fans have been blown away. Having passed the Parkhead punters eye test the Celtic boss will have a hard job keeping a lid on expectations now – and surely he can't be sent out on loan now. Can Hibs spring a shock against Midtjylland in their Europa League qualifier? KEITH JACKSON: Fingers crossed. Let's not forget that HIbs were going almost point for point with Celtic in the second half of last season. Glasgow's big two have carried the burden for long enough. It's about time one of our other clubs started landing blows on the European stage. CRAIG SWAN: It would be unlikely. The Danes are going to be good and David Gray's men will need to be sharp. ‌ MICHAEL GANNON: It looks a really tough one for Hibs. Midtjylland are up and running in their league campaign and battle hardened European performers. David Gray's men will be doing well getting the tie back to Glasgow with a shot at progress. GAVIN BERRY: It's a big ask and there weren't a lot of encouraging signs at Easter Road on Saturday in the defeat to Bolton, albeit it's always dangerous to read too much into pre-season friendly games. I fear the Danes will have too much.
